After Spring is a new documentary feature film that focuses on the Syrian refugee crisis, from Executive Producer Jon Stewart and Directors Steph Ching & Ellen Martinez. Logline After Spring follows the struggles and triumphs of two Syrian families living in a Jordanian refugee camp as they contemplate an uncertain future. About the Film After Spring is a feature documentary that focuses on the Syrian refugee crisis. With the Syrian conflict now in its sixth year, millions of people continue to be displaced. This is the story of what happens next. By following two refugee families in transition and aid workers fighting to keep the camp running, viewers will experience what it is like to live in Zaatari, the largest camp for Syrian refugees. With no end in sight for the conflict or this refugee crisis, everyone must decide if they can rebuild their lives in a place that was never meant to be permanent. Underscoring the timeliness of the film, March 2016 marks the 5th anniversary of the start of the Syrian conflict, which has displaced over 10 million people according to the United Nations. I remember seeing the original footage Steph and Ellen had shot, and being so impressed with their work, and thinking we had to figure out a way to get them back into Zaatari to complete the project. They found a way to tell the story of the camp, to provide some context for the families stories in a beautiful, real and unobtrusive way that is particularly moving and urgent. Jon Stewart, Executive Producer
Press Critics Picks: 10 Best Tribeca Films 2016 The Hollywood Reporter The massive scale of the Syrian refugee problem makes it easy to abstract into percentages. After Spring neither answers questions about the crisis nor poses a solution. What it does is responsibly and knowledgeably bring film-goers to those directly affected by it, and to those trying to make a difference. Patricia Contino, The Upcoming 5/5 stars After Spring is simultaneously a portrait of the dire situation the Syrian refugees are in and a tribute to their resilience. Simone Amelia, The Source Puts a needed human face on the critical refugee crisis. - Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter After Spring is superbly crafted, astute in many ways beautifully filmed and orchestrated, yet shining most in how it handles the complex, emotionally-charged matter of a nation shattered by war. Grounded in its humanity, whatever light it sheds on the facts of this crisis ultimately has one effect: there s no difference between the Syrians and us. An avalanche broke open in what once was perceived as a remote region. This film alters that perception that avalanche was our backyard, and what happened there is changing our world. Cece Ann Lee, Stage Buddy With the new wave of international Islamophobia spurred by the ISIS attacks in Paris, San Bernardino, and Brussels, After Spring is much-needed counterweight. It's a humanizing movie, one about empathy and our duty to others (literally millions) in need. It's far too easy to discount the lives of other people when they're just an abstract ethnic group or religious group. After Spring gives faces to the Syrians similarly affected by the war. - Hubert Vigilla, Flixist an intimate portrait of two Syrian families struggling to make peace with uncertain futures. Justin Carissimo, The Independent After Spring immerses us in the rhythms of the camp, the role of the aid workers, and the daily lives of two families as they contemplate an uncertain future This is a fascinating journey through the camp's physical and human landscapes. Tribeca Film Festival
Film Subjects ABU IBRAHIM used to work in construction. Before arriving at Zaatari, he traveled and worked throughout the Middle East. He even helped install the windows on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world. He is the father of two teenagers, Raghad and Ibrahim. Back in Syria RAGHAD, 13, and IBRAHIM, 14, had been at the top of their class. However, after coming to Zaatari, Ibrahim dropped out of school and Raghad is facing difficulties learning in the crowded classrooms. These two siblings struggle to balance their lives as refugees with their desire to be normal teenagers.
MOHAMMED was one of the first people to arrive at Zaatari and he and his family have been there for over two years now. Despite his initial optimism, not much has improved. He has 5 children all below the age of 11 and he misses Syria more than anything. His wife, Amani, is pregnant; this will be their second child born in the refugee camp. KILIAN KLEINSCHMIDT is UNHCR Zaatari Camp Manager and helped build the camp in July Over the last twenty years he has worked at the edge of war zones all over the world from Pakistan to Congo to Somalia. Through his story we see what it takes to run the second largest refugee camp in the world.
MARAM lives in Mafraq Jordan, the neighboring town to Zaatari. Arabic is her first language and she works for UNHCR, counseling refugees as they voice their complaints and concerns. When people can t come to her, she goes to them, making regular home visits to at-risk people in the camp. She is faced with the daily struggle of prioritizing aid to those who are most in need. Relevant Facts " The Zaatari Refugee Camp is located in Jordan, 7 miles from the Syrian border. " It is the largest camp in the world for Syrian refugees. " Zaatari currently houses approximately 80,000 people. " The camp was built in July " Over half of the camp s population is under the age of 18. " Over 5,000 babies have been born in the camp since it opened. " Over 4 million people have fled Syria. " Half of Syria s pre-war population is now displaced. " In 2016 the global refugee population will exceed 60 million for the first time since WWII. " Today, 1 in every 122 people is now a refugee. Filmmakers' Statement Our goal is to put a human face to the Syrian refugee crisis. Although many news crews have visited Zaatari we had the opportunity to spend months at the camp, uncovering stories never seen before. We believe our film can offer the unique perspective of humanitarians in the field and the Syrians themselves whose voices are so rarely heard.
Filmmakers' Bios Ellen Martinez, Director/Producer, is originally from Texas but grew up overseas and has lived in Dubai, Venezuela and Syria. Her first feature film, AFTER SPRING, a documentary about the Syrian refugee crisis, was Executive Produced by Jon Stewart and supported in part by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and was Associate Producer on TESTED, a feature documentary about the educational inequality in the NYC public school system before directing AFTER SPRING. She is now based in Brooklyn, New York. Steph Ching, Director/Producer, is a Brooklyn based filmmaker from Massachusetts. Most recently, she directed AFTER SPRING, a feature documentary about the Syrian refugee crisis. The film is executive produced by Jon Stewart. She attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and was Associate Producer and Additional Editor of the Emmy Nominated documentary SUPERMENSCH: THE LEGEND OF SHEP GORDON. Other interests include volunteer work and she participated in relief efforts during post-hurricane Katrina and made several trips to Sichuan, China to film testimonials with survivors of the massive 2008 earthquake. Her grandmother was a refugee at the end of World War II before finally making her way to the United States. Jon Stewart, Executive Producer is a comedian, producer, director, screenwriter, author and former host of THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART on Comedy Central. He wrote and directed ROSEWATER, a feature film based on the memoir THEN THEY CAME FOR ME by Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy. ROSEWATER was produced in Jordan during the summer of 2013, and Jon visited the Zaatari refugee camp while in the Middle East. Chris McShane, Executive Producer is the Head of Development and Production at Busboy Productions.

He was a cinematographer on the documentary, AN ACT OF LOVE, about Pastor Frank Schaefer who was defrocked for marrying his son to his same gender partner. Frank Weiss, Cinematographer, began his career as a photographer and filmmaker in 2005 in Kandahar, Afghanistan while serving in the United States Air Force. Frustrated by the impersonal views of the Middle East that news media popularized, Frank felt inspired to capture photographs highlighting the human aspect of the conflict.
