3 Milan. A short profile
4 Milan is the economic capital of Italy (Milan s metropolitan area produces 10% of Italy s GDP) with direct access to the rest of Europe (by road, rail, or air). the powerhouse behind the Lombardy Region and Northern Italy home to leading international brands in fashion and design a reference center for education and research (7 universities in the city, 5 in the surrounding area (<100 km); 8 Higher Education Art and Music Institutes; 26 research centers acknowledged by the Ministry for University and Research], 38 National Centers for Scientific Research (CNR), private companies Research labs, etc.) the 6th city for number of European research projects attracted a growing hub for innovative startups (22% of Italy s patents; 2 days to start a company) the smartest city in Italy (2015 and 2016 ICity Rate ranking).
5 Milan has the world s 3rd largest exhibition space, hosting 51 events with 24,000 exhibitors and 5 million visitors per year 174,834 enterprises (of which: 37,199 commercial, 5,694 craft and 95 agricultural activities) and 17 institutional investors specialized in innovative business 3,000 multinational companies (among these: Italy s Facebook and Google offices) incubators and coworking spaces (16 incubators within Milan s area, from tech to agri-food, fashion, design, and social innovation; 60 coworking spaces).
6 The Metropolitan City of Milan (operative since January 1, 2015) is one of Europe s largest metropolitan areas, of southern Europe's key transport nodes and of Italy's most important railway hubs has a total area of 1,575 km 2 (608 sq mi) and a population of 3,206,465 (october 2015) produces 10% of Italian GDP (144 billion EUR in 2015, the 4th among the European metropolitan areas) The Mayor of Milan is designated to exercise the functions of Metropolitan mayor, presiding over a Metropolitan Council (formed by 24 mayors of municipalities within the Metropolitan City) Not to be confused with Milan metropolitan area (metropolitan area of the Metropolitan City of Milan)

8 Official Residents Italians and non-nationals by gender and age (in thousands) ,318,123 residents, of which: % are non-nationals coming from over 20 countries of origin 58.5% (772,000) are in the age group. Women make up 51%. 84
9 Employed (residents) by gender and age 563,000 residents in employment, 47,6% of which are women (268,000).
10 Educational attainment and nationality Working women (20-64) have higher educational attainment than men This goes for both Italian and non-nationals. This gap is wider in the 20 to 29 age group Fonte: Istat 2014
11 Knowledge vs unskilled work (by gender and nationality) FEMALE Don ne 62.2% Italian females work in highly qualified professions vs. 66.1% males. Only 5.7% work in unskilled jobs. The opposite is true for non-national females, as 54.9% are in unskilled jobs (vs. 52.2% males), and only 14.6% of them are in in high-skilled occupations. MALE Uomi ni Moreover the range of occupations involving non-national females is very limited : 7 out of 10 are employed in domestic help, care assistance, cleaning services, janitors, etc. In Milan, most of the major occupational groups are made by women more or less half. There is an almost equal number of self-employed among Italian females (22.6%) and males (29.2%).
