1 Levels o Historical and Cultural Awareness o Peoples in Selected Countries o Southeast Asia: A Comparative Study Isabel Annesley S. ABAO 1 University o Santo Tomas MANILA ABSTRACT To show one's nationalistic ervor or a country, as Sonia Zaide had stated, there should be a balanced appreciation o all the actors, which make the history o a country, including both the good and the bad aspects o the past. Hence, a study o history must be gleaned not only rom the sordid past o the nation's history like the invasion and colonization o a stronger power that usually leads to a revolution o the masses and thereore breeds hatred and bitterness but also rom its beautiul heritage and inluence on world aairs. It is in this premise that this study was undertaken in the selected countries in Southeast Asia, namely Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam who are constantly at odds with themselves i not with their previous colonizers. This study will be a constant reminder that an appreciation o a country's past can only be possible i the people will be aware o what had transpired in their history as a people and as a nation. Such that a quantitative study on the level o historical and cultural awareness ocusing on similarities and dierences was conducted to the total o 1 people in the said countries selected based on purposive sampling with the used o Percentage, Mean, Standard Deviation, and Anova to determine the results o the ollowing variables; awareness o the common belies and practices, settlement patterns, early settlers, geographical location, and eatures, resources, legends and myths, amily, community, religion, educational system, including its politics and governance. Having these eatures as the ocal point, the study would be relevant to the plan o the Association o Southeast Asian to create one region like the European Union. The study yielded the ollowing results that, in regards to value orientation, religion and political structure o the selected countries are comparable, but based on value and political structures, a signiicant dierence existed. The indings implied that to trace 1 Isabel Annesley S. Abao is a proessor at the University o Santo Tomas with a strong background in Social Sciences and History. 2 2 and revive the history o one's country is both a social and moral obligation o its people and that a comparative insight on the level o awareness o a people's historical and cultural heritage helps see connections between dierent events and show how actions lead on to another. Keywords: historical and cultural awareness; Asian heritage; political structure; level o awareness; historical and cultural legacies i n Southeast Asia, countries had experienced countless revolutions and evolutions rom the time the Westerners came to their shores until the recent happenings which showed their unity to attain independence. The common denominator among these Southeast Asian countries was that the West colonized all except Thailand. It is in this context that it can be mentioned here the events o the past must be a lesson learned because picking and learning rom past experiences become the positive oundation o a nation's development, unity, and understanding. Moreover, despite a country's diverse practices and belies, possessing knowledge o history and tracing back the beginning o a nation can motivate unity or positive transormation. A ailure to recognize this reality is the same as discounting who we are and how we came to be. I this transpires in a society, disintegration awaits and will soon create people without an identity. With this, perhaps, the most oten-cited practical reason or studying history is owing to the belie that knowledge o history can improve judgment as it was stated that history is our genesis. History explains who we are, what we are, and how we came to be. 2 Hence, i the students grasp this importance o history, it will be a guarantee that they will be a productive citizen o the nation. This can urther be airmed in the study o Santiago, as he emphasized that many o our countrymen, especially the younger generation, have already orgotten the value o the sacriices made by our heroes. 3 His work serves as a reminder or people that heroes must be their role models at present, that their lives must exhibit the positive qualities shared by these heroes to be a productive citizen o this country. This claim assures the thinking that man today lives in a global culture permeated by change and diversity. However, change does not mean progress, so there is a need or man to control and direct history. As Garcia 34 stated that man needs a critical center that is big 2 Philip Althbach and Toru Umakoshi, ed. 3 3 enough to be at home in both the old and the new to avoid living in a world that no longer exists. In addition to this thinking, though history does not tell us the answers to our questions, it helps us to pursue better decisions in the uture. 5 It can be noted here now that a student who reads history will unconsciously develop the value o knowing the past. Taking into consideration the acts above, one cannot deny the importance o historical awareness among people o a particular country and nation so that they can move orward towards a prosperous uture. It is or this reason that this study developed an interest to ind out the level o historical and cultural awareness o peoples in selected countries o Southeast Asia, namely, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. In choosing the countries, the researcher took into consideration that Southeast Asia must be represented by countries rom the mainland and islands such that this study aims to ind out the similarities and dierences o the peoples perceptions about the history o their countries, as well as the inluential actors that unite and understand their identity as a region. Signiicantly, being aware o one s beginnings will develop positive insights on giving solutions to contemporary problems o society. That historical and cultural awareness can develop an intercultural understanding o strengths and weaknesses that can lead to an environment o respect or people s national identity, thus, promoting peace and tolerance among nations. As a consequence, an appreciation o one s history and culture can indicate a high correlation between the strong values among its people and the progress o a nation. The study was urther enorced and was anchored on the theory o Condorcet which states that history is a record o change and is based on the observation o human societies through the dierent stages o their development. 6 As Halili wrote it, that as a historical being, man responds to situations placed beore him and thus his actions are based on his thoughts as outputs o introspection or meditation. His actions, thereore, are not just involuntary movements especially when an element o time allows him to think o his next steps. 6 7 Thereore, i man in a given society is aware o what has transpired in the past, he can choose which action to avoid and will be credible to make sound decisions or the country. Hence, this study can serve as a tool in examining the historical awareness o Southeast Asian countries, 5 Dianne Ratvich. 4 4 especially with Southeast Asia s aim o establishing a region like that o the European Union. In this study, it was assumed that there were no signiicant dierences in the historical and cultural awareness o the peoples under study. The settings o the study were the selected countries in Southeast Asia namely: Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The researcher stayed in each country or at least three days to have a thorough observation o the respondents and to have ample time or the retrieval o the questionnaires. The study aimed to ind out the levels o historical and cultural awareness o the our countries. Speciically, the study sought to answer the ollowing questions: 1. What is the proile o the respondents in terms o: Age, Gender, Nationality, Educational Background, Sources o Livelihood, Salary, Religion, Languages Spoken, Family Structure, Unique Character Traits. 2. How did the respondents identiy their Asian heritage in terms o: Belies and practices, Legends, Positive values Religious ailiation/teaching, Educational structure, Political structure, Economic structure, Social Structure. 3. In terms o colonization, revolution, and assimilation, how were the respondents inluenced by the ollowing countries: China, India, the Arabian Peninsula, European Countries, United States o America except or Thailand. 4. How did the respondents preserve the historical and cultural legacies o their countries in terms o: Education, Government, and Politics, Economic Resources, Religious Ailiation, Character Traits, Belies, and Practices. 5. What were the levels o historical and cultural awareness o the respondents based on: Value Orientation, Family Structure, Religion, Political Structure, and Economic Structure. 6. How did the level o historical and cultural awareness o the respondents o the country compare when grouped according to their I:2 (December 218)

5 5 countries based on: Value Orientation, Family Structure, Religion, Political Structure, Economic Structure. Each country was represented by 25 respondents selected randomly, and the approximate population o the country was not included. It can be deduced here that the result o the study will only be true to the particular group o respondents since the survey was done through an unstructured interview and distribution o questionnaires where the researcher let it to the interviewee to guide the exchange o questions and answers. As to the questionnaire, it was a tool speciically prepared by the researcher or the study. To ensure validity and reliability, the instrument was submitted to the experts in the areas o history and Southeast Asian countries. The ages o the respondents were limited to 16 and above because the researcher assumed that this age range o individuals is amiliar with their histories and cultural practices through their exposure to its social environment. For instance, in Thailand, secondary education begins at the age o 15 wherein a child practically takes up courses in the Social Sciences. 78 In Indonesia, on another hand, this subject was given as an integral part o a Social Science subject in elementary school, while in secondary school it was oered as an independent subject. History subject is strategically signiicant in shaping state character and humanized civilization as well as in equipping Indonesian people with nationalism and patriotism. Children are required by law to attend ormal education rom the ages o seven to iteen. 89 In the case o Vietnam, upper secondary education begins at the age o 16 where students learn about Foreign language, mathematics, art, physical education, Vietnamese language and literature, music, biology, history, chemistry, civics, geography, physics, and technology. 1 As with the Philippines, students learn history at the elementary level. This goes to show that as early as 16 years old in all the countries under study students are already amiliar with the history o their country. The study used the descriptive method and survey research or data gathering wherein the researcher used questionnaires, non-structured interviews, and non-participatory observation as techniques and tools in 8 Education in Thailand. 6 6 sociological inquiry. Purposive sampling technique was used in choosing the respondents because the criteria were set in the selection o the respondents. The criteria or selection were the ollowing: 1. Must be a national o the country concerned; 2. Must be between the ages 16 and above; 3. Must have studied Social Studies/History in school at any academic level; 4. Must be willing to be interviewed on the spot; and 5. Must be capable o providing reliable inormation on the chosen topic. Pieces o data were gathered rom primary and secondary sources. In analyzing the results o the questionnaire, the data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using percentage, mean standard deviation and ANOVA was used to compare the level o awareness o the countries under study wherein the mean, standard deviation and T-value ( Signiicance) and indings were relected in the table. All these seven character traits o the people in the region are observed everywhere, and the oreigners are astonished and highly admired the people in the region because o their remarkable Asian characteristics. The rest still practice a traditional approach to their way o lie. Thus, one can see that despite the coming modernization and technological revolutions, the people o Southeast Asia have nurtured a quasibelie and practice in their way o thinking; seeing and doing things and are at par with the rest o the global community, thereby enhancing their old practices, which in a way help trace their historical root and origin as a people o distinct identity. A minority o the respondents stated that their positive values are based on being materialistic a orm o survival. Thereore, despite the introduction o Western Culture, these countries in Southeast Asia were able to enhance their Asian Heritage, a sign that Southeast Asian people identiy and maintain their own identity as a people. This can be seen rom the responses o the Thais, Indonesians and the Filipinos TABLE 8 Asian Heritage Based on Economic Structure Economic Structure Thailand Vietnam Indonesia Philippine s 1. Agriculture Technological Trading system 4. Importation Others Total Considering Asian legacy based on economic structure, majority o the respondents or 4 rom Thailand, 44 rom Vietnam, 44 rom Indonesia and 52 rom the Philippines were all ocused on agriculture, ollowed by technology which was introduced by western investors; trading system, an economic system, proposed by China, India, and the Western Countries. All o the our countries are import-export oriented, being the suppliers o human and natural resources to the haves countries, and buyers o inished products rom outside orces like China, India, Great Britain, some European countries and the United States. Looking into the level and extent o inluences rom China, India, Arabian Peninsula, European Countries and the United States o America, it can be gleaned that or Vietnam, China's inluence was given a perception o "high extent." For Indonesia, China's inluence was to a "high extent," and in the Philippines, China's inluence in the country was given a verbal interpretation o "high extent." It can be noted that it was only Thailand where Chinese inluence was not given too much concern except in trade unlike in Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines where the presence o Chinatowns prolierate in their countries, and Chinese inluence is prooundly elt to the greatest extent especially in trade and commerce including the introduction o Buddhism. I:2 (December 218)

12 12 Taking into account India's inluence, a majority o the respondents perceive it to a moderate extent. As to the Arabian inluence, the Thai respondents perceived the Arab inluence to a "moderate extent." On the other hand, the respondents believed that the Arab inluence on amily ties, loyalty to amily and party leaders control in all walks o lie were to a low extent." In Vietnam, the respondents elt that the Arab inluence was only to a "moderate extent," while in Indonesia, the respondents believed that the Arab inluences were elt to a "high extent." As an overall mean, the Indonesian respondents elt that the Arab inluence was to a "moderate extent." In the Philippines, the Arab inluence was perceived to a "moderate extent." For the European inluence in the our countries used in this study, the ollowing were observed: Thailand believed that the European inluence was practiced to "moderate extent" even though England had politically, socially, and economically inluenced the country during the past. This was because the present breed o respondents is more amiliar with the present conditions o the country. In Vietnam, the respondents considered colonization and revolution to have brought changes because o the series o ethnic wars, and the Vietnam War. The repressive colonial rule made the respondents eel that these events aected the country to a "high extent." For the Indonesian respondents, colonial rule and war were elt to a "high extent," while "moderate extent" was given by the Indonesian respondents in regards to the inluence o Europe on their history and culture. For the Filipino respondents, European inluence was elt moderately in the country s historical and cultural legacies. As to the United States o America, The Thai respondents considered the American inluence to a high extent as regards to the aspiration or independence done through the establishment o a civilian government, improvement o public health and sanitation and the revolution and evolutionary reorms in business. In Vietnam, aspiration or interdependence and establishing a civilian government was perceived to a "high extent," so with an existing representative institution, since these respondents belonged to the present generation, who probably would like to indirectly orget the sad story o their country in the past. The presumed observation is understandable since these respondents belonged to the present and are only concerned with the present status as a nation. In Indonesia, American inluence was not evident because o the Dutch intrusion in the country. For the Filipino respondents, a "high extent" was given to American inluences in the lives o I:2 (December 218)

13 13 the present-day citizens. It can be observed that American inluence in the Philippines was elt in the socio-political and economic strata and with the United States o America's "sphere o inluence" over the country's history and socio-cultural practices, the inluence was vividly elt. Discussing the level o historical and cultural awareness o the respondents, as to the value orientation, hospitality was practiced to a "high extent" in the our countries used in the study, as with other values like tolerance, respect, humility, and loyalty are traits taught by the amily's religious belies and practices and its level o awareness was observed to a "high extent." Asians are also known or their indirect way o reasoning which was "highly" observed in the Philippines and Indonesia but "moderately" aware in Thailand and Vietnam. It is only in Thailand where the respondents observed that the people in Asia are "highly" aware that nature has something to do with their way o lie. The three other countries observed the level o awareness only to a "moderate extent." Moreover, all the countries under study except Thailand perceived that the respondents' level o awareness as regards to amily structure was "highly" observed. Thailand is "moderately" aware o the practice o listening to circle o relatives or discussions, and instead it is the amily elders that give decisions, likewise in marriage, the Thais were "moderately "aware that couple's amily training is essential. Thereore, the diversity o religious practices and belies divide the people's perceptions about their religion. With regard to the political structure o the our countries, respondents rom Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines considered their level o historical and cultural awareness to a "high extent" inasmuch as these are countries that belonged and were politically inluenced by the "big powers" I:2 (December 218)

15 15 like China, Russia, Europe, and the United States. Thailand was the only country in contrast such that its level o political awareness is to a "moderate extent" only because the country has never been colonized by the superpowers and remained a ree country, politically speaking. Furthermore, the people's level o awareness in regards to their economic resources was observed to a high extent because o the advent o industrialization and modernization that directly aected the our countries under study. TABLE 9 Matrix Showing the Comparison o the Countries under Study Based on the Levels o Historical and Cultural Awareness Levels o Historical and Cultural Awareness Value orientation Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines Family structure Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines Religion Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines Comparable Comparison No signiicant dierence exists among the countries under study. This only shows that respondents still adhere to their country's value orientation despite the coming o modernization. Not Comparable A signiicant dierence exists between the Thais and the Filipinos and so with the Viets and the Filipinos. This is because in Thailand social inequalities exist, and there are ewer opportunities or women. In the Philippines, on the other hand, women were highly regarded in hierarchical status and are independent. For the Viets and the Filipinos, the Viet consider the amily as second only to the state while or the Filipinos the amily is the cornerstone o the society. Comparable 16 No signiicant dierence exists among the countries under study because their political structure is all a usion o West and Asian models. Not Comparable A signiicant dierence exists between the Thais and the Viets because state policies drive the Thai economy while human resources drive the Viet economy. For the Thai and Indonesians, the Thais are particularly dependent on oreign powers wherein they tend to lose track o what the human resources can do while the Indonesians have to work hard to be economically selsustaining. For the Thais and the Filipinos, the Thai has a robust economy and is aligned with the economic tiger while the Filipinos are dependent on partnerships with other countries. A glance at the above table would show that as to value orientation, no signiicant dierence exists among the countries under study. This only proves that the respondents still adhere to their country's value orientation despite the coming o modernization, thereore comparable. Looking closely would urther reveal that as to amily structure, Signiicant dierence exists between the Thais and the Filipinos and so with the Viets and the Filipinos. This is because in Thailand social inequalities exist, and there are ewer opportunities or women while in the Philippines women were highly regarded in hierarchical status and are independent. For the Viets and the Filipinos, the Viet consider the amily as second only to the state while or the Filipinos the amily is the cornerstone o the society, hence not comparable. Focusing on religion, no signiicant dierence exists among the countries under study. This only shows that the respondents still believe that there is one Supreme Being who guides and shape their destiny, thereore comparable. As to political structure, no signiicant dierence exists among the countries under study because their political structure is all a usion o West and Asian models, again comparable. Taking into consideration, the economic structure o the countries under study, a signiicant dierence exists between the Thais and the Viets because state policies drive the Thai economy while human resources drive the I:2 (December 218)

For the Thai and Indonesians, the Thais are dependent on oreign powers that they tend to lose track o what the human resources can do while the Indonesians have to work hard to become economically selsustaining. For the Thais and the Filipinos, the Thai has a robust economy and is aligned with the economic tiger while the Filipinos are too dependent on partnerships with other countries, hence not comparable. Thus, it can be deduced rom the table that in value orientation, political structure, and religion the countries under study are comparable. On the basis o amily and economic structure, the countries under study are not comparable as explained in the table. The basic characteristics o the respondents used in any study especially in regards to age, nationality, and educational background give the readers assurance that their views o the world around them would lead them to a lesser chance to repeat the mistakes o the past and improve their judgments and levels o awareness about their history and culture. I:2 (December 218)

19 19 2. Identiying one's Asian heritage can help people develop an awareness o history and the culture shaped by traditions, belies, legends, and positive values. With this, they can readily relate it to the present and prepare a sound decision or the uture. 3. Foreign and outside inluences create patterns o cause and eects which bring about an awareness o history and help develop the national spirit o nationalism and patriotism. 4. History explains to man how he/she comes to be, who he/she is, why he/she is, and where he/she is today. Preservation o historical and cultural records and practices is one way to be conscious o one s sense o history. 5. To trace and revive the history o one's country is both social responsibility and a moral obligation. Hence, it is imperative to be aware o the structures and unctions o its underlying social institutions speciically ocused on amily and religion. 6. A comparative insight on the level o awareness o a people s historical and cultural heritage helps see connections between dierent events and show how actions lead on to another that brought about the rise o nations, regional cooperation and create its own national identity.
