Business 2. Employment or seasonal employment 3. Study 4. Special activities (lecturing, sport, artistic and voluntary activities, activity of an accredited journalist, medical treatment, internship etc.) 5. Research and development 6. Family reunion 7. Performing professional duties by civilian units of the armed forces 8. Person with acknowledged status of a Slovak Living Abroad 9. Person with acknowledged long-term residence in another Union Member State Temporary residence for the purpose of study A. Non EU students A1. BEFORE ARRIVAL TO SLOVAK REPUBLIC: Each student from non-eu [1] should possess the Schengen or National visa and Temporary Residence Permit. There are two possibilities how to apply for the residence permit for the purpose of study: 1. A foreigner has to submit application for temporary residence must be submitted in person at a diplomatic mission of the Slovak Republic accredited to the country where the passport of a third country national was issued or to the country of his/her residence. (If it is not possible and the case is worth special attention, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the SR and the Ministry of Interior of the SR may empower another diplomatic mission of the Slovak Republic to accept and process the application). The diplomatic mission will interview the applicant for the purpose of preliminary assessment of the application. If a foreign national resides in Slovakia legally, the application may be submitted at the competent Foreigner s Police Department according to the place of his/her residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic (please take into consideration that after submitting your application in this case the Foreigner s Police Department has 30 days for decision so your visa permission should be issued for sufficient number of days and it accepts application only in case the student has all the required documents concerning his stay!) Applications must be submitted in person. Documents required when applying for temporary residence: 1. Filled in application form 2. 2 identical colour photos (3 x 3.5 cm) 3. Fee stamp - for the temporary residence for the purpose of study there is no fee 4. Valid passport - valid at least 6 months after the end of study 5. Document proving the purpose of residence - Letter of Acceptance, Admission letter 6. Document proving clear criminal record - a clean criminal record is proved by submitting a Criminal Registry Extract from the country of origin of the foreign national and a Criminal Registry Extract from the country where he/she resided in the last 3 years for more than 90 days during 6 consecutive months. 7. Documents proving financial coverage - stay of the foreign national in Slovakia must be financially covered in the amount of a statutory life minimum for each month of your residence (until July 2013 the sum of statutory life minimum is EUR /month). If the length of stay exceeds a period of one year, it is required to prove financial coverage in the amount of 12 times the statutory life minimum (until July 2013 this equals to EUR ). Financial coverage may be for example proved either by submitting an account statement in the name of the foreign national from a bank in the territory of Slovakia or from a bank in the country of origin of the foreign national (if the account is in a freely convertible currency), translated by a certified translator to Slovak language or a confirmation from the employer on the agreed height of monthly salary. - confirmation of the account balance - if the financial resources for residence are proven by means of a bank account, the foreign national must submit a confirmation of the account balance (not a statement of his/her personal bank account) - sufficient proof is also document proving obtaining a scholarship (this has to fill the minimum financial criteria mentioned above) 8. Confirmation of accommodation is for the purpose of study not needed

3 IMPORTANT TO NOTE: 1. The permit for temporary stay is bound to one purpose. If a foreigner intends to carry out different activities that for the permit for temporary stay was granted he/she has to submit a new application for granting of temporary stay. 2. All documents submitted with the application must not be older than 90 days. Each foreign document must be authenticated (either by an apostillation or a consular super legalization) and must be translated into Slovak language by an official translator certified by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic - list of acknowledged translators is available here: (section on the left side-prekladatelia) 3. All documents issued by an authority of a foreign state must be duly authenticated. More information is available here: 4. An application must be submitted in an official form issued by the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic. The Foreigner s Police Department or a diplomatic mission shall issue a receipt for the applicant, confirming collection of his/her application. The Foreigner s Police Department decides within 30 days from the date of delivering the complete application. The decision of diplomatic mission takes longer period as it is sending applicants paper to the Slovak republic per diplomatic post (firstly You have to book a date at the competent diplomatic mission, submit all the required documents and then wait for the decision). 6. Temporary residence allows the third country national to stay in Slovakia legally and to travel abroad and back during the period for which the residence was granted. A2. AFTER ARRIVAL: Each student from non EU [2] has to: 1. register at Foreigner s Police Department (FPO) in Slovakia within 3 working days from arrival to Slovak republic (reporting your stay) 2. apply for the Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) 30 days before the expiry date of his/her VISA or as soon as possible as You enter Slovak republic 3. conclude health insurance within 3 working days from collecting the residence document 4. take medical report certifying that the foreign national does not suffer from an illness endangering public health must be submitted within 30 days from collecting the residence document. Students will receive help from faculty coordinators and buddies to manage these obligations after arrival. Registration at Foreigner s Police Department Students have to go to this office with passport and report their arrival to Slovak republic. This can be done in any Foreigner s Police Department in every city within 3 working days after arrival. The sooner, the better. 5 2. Application for the Temporary Residence Permit Temporary residence permit is a document that allows a foreign student to stay and study in Slovakia after his/her VISA permit expires. It is necessary, even if student owns special or diplomatic passport. 3. Medical Examination Students from non EU countries need to take health examination in Department of foreign diseases at the Hospital in Martin (63 km from Banská Bystrica). The date of the examination will be managed by a faculty coordinator at the Matej Bel University 1 or 2 weeks after arrival of foreign students to Slovakia. Extension of the temporary residence permit Before your temporary residence permit expires you can apply for its extension. You must submit the application personally no later than the day on which the validity of your temporary residence permit expires. Please note that the Foreigner s Police Department has 30 days for making the decision. We recommend you to apply sooner, because after your first temporary residence permit is over, you are obliged to remain in the Slovak republic, until the competent Foreigner s Police Department does not take decision (30 days period). When you apply for the extension of your permit, you have to submit the same documents as in the case of your original permit application with certain exceptions. For example, your extract from the criminal register is not required. Residence document/card You must pay an administrative fee of 4,50 for the issuance of the temporary residence permit document. The residence document can be obtained under a fast-track procedure within two working days for an administrative fee of EUR After being issued, the residence document can be delivered to an address within the territory of the SR for an administrative fee of EUR The residence document contains an electronic chip which holds data on the holder of the permit and on his/her residence in the territory of the SR.

6 B. Legalization of Stay for EU students Students from EU countries do not need to have the temporary residence permit or another permission to study in Slovakia. They are however obliged to apply for registration of their stay in Slovakia if they stay in Slovak republic lasts more than 90 days. We strongly recommend doing this registration sooner. Documents required when applying for temporary residence: 1. Confirmation of the study (Letter of Acceptance, Admission letter) from the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations at the Matej Bel University given by coordinator at the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations 2. Confirmation about the accommodation in Slovak republic given by dormitory manager (or manager of apartment if you find your own accommodation) just in case You want to receive a temporary residence card (the confirmation proving the accommodation is not needed in a case the student is only registering and does not want to obtain a temporary residence document/card) 3. Application form for Temporary residence permit obtained in Foreigner s Police Department 4. 2 passport photos (3 x 3.5 cm)

Health Insurance and Health Care Slovakia has a national system of health insurance. All foreign students coming to study in Slovakia are legally obliged to have a health insurance valid for the territory of Slovak Republic and for the whole period of their stay. Students from EU countries citizens are entitled to health care under the same conditions as the Slovak citizens. They have to present European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to the health care provider. The necessary treatment will be covered by Slovak Health insurance company according to tariffs for Slovak citizens, provided that the health care provider has a valid contract with at least one health insurance company. You can find more information about EHIC Students from Non EU counties which have not contracted health insurance before leaving their country are required to obtain health insurance in Slovakia.
