Projects 2014 Winterization Project for the Syrian Refugees Wooden Pallets
RiseFoundation Winterization Project for the Syrian Refugees Wooden Pallets
#Pallets In January 2014, RISE Foundation received its second delivery of 300 pallets from Coca-Cola for distribution in Kawergosk refugee camp. Problems caused by adverse weather Heavy rain is common in winter in Iraqi Kurdistan and residents at Kawergosk suffer terribly from the wet. Tents are pitched directly on the soil and when the weather is at its worst, water rises up and saturates the tent base. As well as causing extreme discomfort, this dampness increases health risks, particularly in relation to respiratory problems, which medical authorities have highlighted as a major concern in Kawergosk. How pallets help When placed under tents, pallets are immediately effective in reducing dampness and the risk of flooding. They act as a protective platform, separating the carpet at the base of the tent from the saturated ground, thus keeping the inside of the tent dry. Distributing pallets Kawergosk refugee camp contains approximately 1,900 tents. To protect all of the families, a total of 22,800 wooden pallets would be required a figure that is not feasible to obtain and distribute at this stage. However, there are some areas of the camp that are more vulnerable than others. These are usually areas where drainage is insufficient or where there is a depression in the terrain. With each new delivery of pallets, RISE Foundation identifies which tents suffer the most from flooding and residual dampness. Using auto rickshaws hired from and driven by refugees, RISE Foundation distributes 12 pallets per tent to cover the main living area in each tent.
The response from refugees This is an on-going project and there are still many tents in Kawergosk which do not yet have pallets, despite being in flood-risk areas. Pallets are therefore in high demand and residents are extremely appreciative when they receive them. On behalf of the Syrian refugees in Kawergosk camp, RISE Foundation would like to thank Coca-Cola for their support with this project.
Prospective Our goal is to help the most vulnerable families living in the most exposed areas before the rainy season hits. With this in mind, RISE Foundation calls upon individuals and companies to assist us in this project and hereby contribute to alleviating hardships for Syrian refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan. What we have achieved so far 1030 Pallets Thanks to the support of several donors, we have been able to supply pallets to 86 tents, benefitting approximately 557 individuals to date (January 2014). What we want to achieve 2230 Pallets Each tent requires an average of 12 wooden pallets to cover the main living area. With a total of 1,200 pallets we would be able to protect 100 tents from dampness and flooding. Approximately 650 individuals would benefit from this. #Pallets

RISE Foundation was established in 2012 by Dr. Amer Harky, Cecily Cook, and Tom Robinson in response to observed unmet needs of the Syrian refugee population. RISE Foundation aims to foster hope, uphold dignity and encourage community development within the Syrian refugee camps of Iraqi Kurdistan. By improving living conditions, providing amenities, entertainment and paid employment, the Foundation encourages refugees to involve themselves in the projects and take pride in their communities. RISE Foundation is a non-profit organization registered with the Kurdistan Regional Government Department of NGOs (registration number ).
