2 2018 UNAA UN NEW YORK STUDY TOUR TOUR NOTES TOUR CLOTHING > Men wear dark suits with tie. Suits can be black, grey, blue, brown, or variations of these dark colours. > Women wear work clothing. Colour isn t normally an issue, but they, similarly, wear conservative type clothing. > Weather could be cool during our time in NYC so we suggest including a light coat. PASSPORTS AT ALL TIMES! We have been advised by nearly all of the places we are visiting that we will all need valid photo ID to enter so please take your passport with you each day. SCHEDULE You may notice that we are scheduled to arrive at some places before our meeting times this is to allow time to get through Security. LUNCHES As you will see, we have a tight schedule but we have tried to ensure there is time for lunch each day. Carlisle will provide some suggestions close to our venues about possible lunch options but please feel free to make your own arrangements. 8 THE UN IN UN Headquarters in New York is home to the General Assembly; Security Council; Economic and Social Council; Trusteeship Council and much of the UN Secretariat. New York also hosts the headquarters of the UN Development Programme (UNDP); UN Children s Fund (UNICEF); UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Women. Founded in 1945, the UN is currently made up of 193 Member States. The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. Due to the powers vested in its Charter and its unique international character, the United Nations can take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, governance, food production, and more. The UN also provides a forum for its members to express their views in the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies and committees. Source: THE UN A SHORT HISTORY The name United Nations, coined by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers. In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia at an earlier meeting in The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 Member States. The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories. United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 October each year.

9 ABOUT UN NYC HEADQUARTERS The UN New York headquarters occupies a site beside the East River, on around 18 acres. The UN officially moved into the Secretariat Building in January, The Dag Hammarskjöld Library Building was officially opened in November While the Secretariat building is the most identifiable, the NY site also includes a domed General Assembly building, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, and a Conference and Visitors Centre. The flags of all 193 UN member states, plus the UN flag, are flown in English alphabetical order inside the perimeter fence. The site of the UN headquarters has extraterritoriality status. This means that UN rules usually override the laws of New York City, but it does not give immunity to those who commit crimes there. The UN identifies Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish as its six official languages. Delegates speaking in any of these languages will have their words simultaneously interpreted. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, so most signs in the UN headquarters building are in those languages. 10 TOUR LEADER CARLISLE RICHARDSON Carlisle Richardson is a former Ambassador of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations, and a former Economic Affairs Officer of the United Nations. As Ambassador, he worked on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the preparations for the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. As Economic Affairs Officer at the United Nations, he was one of the organisers of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States, and the negotiating process for the SDGs. He is currently Special Advisor to ICLEI Oceania on Small Island Developing States. He is also author of the Book, Island Journeys: The Impact of the Island Way of Life at Home and Abroad TOUR COORDINATOR SOPHIE ARNOLD sophie@unaavictoria.org.au Sophie Arnold has been Executive Manager of the UNAA s Victorian Division for the past two years. A journalist by training, Sophie covered politics and industrial relations for The Age, Sunday Age and Sunday Herald before becoming a media adviser to Victorian Government Ministers and then Premier, Joan Kirner. For more than two decades, Sophie ran a successful media and communications practice, providing writing, editing and communications advice to a range of government, corporate and not for profit agencies. She is a former Victorian Vice President of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, former manager of the Melbourne Athenaeum Incorporated (current Vice President) and member of the WIRE: Women s Information Committee of Management.
