1st Annual Report April 2015 TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Reg Charity No:
ONE NATION Our Vision A caring world where the basic requirements of people in need are fulfilled. Our vision is the alleviation of poverty, education for all, and the provision of basic amenities for those in need; in order to create a world where charity and compassion produce justice, self-reliance and human development. General Information We work on a variety of Local, National and International projects. Homelessness Helping the homeless in the local area, and supporting other local initiatives to aid community cohesion. International relief responding to emergencies, wars and natural disasters in countries such as Gaza/ Palestine, Syria, Bosnia and Bangladesh with financial and humanitarian assistance. We aim to develop longterm self-sustaining projects to help alleviate poverty. Whilst responding to emergencies is one of our major priorities, we also work on strategic programmes to eliminate poverty that focus upon: Education Skills training Provision of clean water Healthcare Income generation projects These projects ensure that individuals can have access to basic necessities and the skills necessary to generate an income, so that they are not permanently dependent on aid agencies for food and shelter. Our charity operates on a 100% donation policy. We work under the guidance of scholars and the charity commision in order to ensure the funds are distributed according to Islamic and UK charitable law. Our team on the ground aim to deliver aid to the most needy by hand. Allied to our various other projects, and through your continued support, we will make a difference and see improvements in this cause. In 2014, One Nation secured a Widows and Orphans camp inside Syria where we are helping to support those who have lost their husbands and parents to war. The camp provides safe and secure accommodation, electricity, clean water, food, clothing, blankets and utensils, and medicine and now we are also providing the children and widows with free secular and Islamic education. Alhumdulillah, every family s need is catered for. In the harsh, difficult winter of 2014, the tinned roof flew off and there was much damage to the camp, but thanks to your donations, we managed to repair the camp and provide even better facilities for our brothers and sisters. All the charity s admin costs are covered by: Lillah donations specified for administration. This ensures the 100% donations policy is maintained. Tax reclaimed from the UK government s Gift Aid scheme. This allows taxpayers to increase the value of their donation by 25%. This additional money is allocated to the charity s administration fund. Note: Not all funds in the administration account are used for administration. Surplus Gift aid funds are transferred to the charity s relief account. To donate visit: PAGE 2
RAMADAN IN SYRIA 2015 Choosing what to eat for Iftar? Some people don t have a choice. Help feed the needy this Ramadan in Syria. RAMADAN IN SYRIA 2014 In 2014, One Nation managed to secure a project where our team on the ground inside Syria delivered hot food for iftar to displaced families, widows and orphans. Our trustee travelled from the UK to personally prepare and deliver the food to the most needy of rural areas such as Latakia, Idlib, Aleppo, Hama and the refugee camps. Our team also helped to feed our brothers and sisters in the South Damascus areas of Barzah and Ghouta. Thanks to your donations, thousands of people benefitted daily throughout the month of Ramadan and we are happy to announce that we will be continuing this wonderful project for Ramadan This year our team will be personally delivering your amanah to our brothers and sisters in Syria. ALEPPO GHOUTA HAMA Help make a difference with your zakaat by providing Iftar for the most needy from 1 a day per person - 30 for the month. Hot meals will be served daily for Iftar (breaking fast). 4 FOOD PARCELS & OTHER AID 10 million people in urgent need of aid inside Syria over 200,000 deaths For many people trapped inside Syria, the scarcity of food is an even greater threat to their lives than bombs and snipers. 3 million people are living in besieged areas, where nothing can get in or out. Children are dying of starvation, and people are reduced to eating dogs and cats. Lack of adequate nutrition makes people more prone to disease and less able to cope with injuries, leading to an endless cycle of death. 5 HOSPITALS IN SYRIA Eid-Ul-Adha Convoy 2014 After four years of war, more than 6 million refugees who are displaced within Syria face a health care disaster. The UNHCR estimates 60 percent of the country s hospitals have been damaged or destroyed and nearly half of its doctors have fled. The crisis has hit children especially hard, with 10,000 deaths and many more suffering from serious injuries and diseases due to the lack of medicine and medical staff. Many people are losing lives solely because of a severe lack of basic healthcare in Syria, with children and babies especially affected. Alhumdulillah, One Nation is now assisting two clinics inside Syria which help the innocent civilians caught up in this crisis. We are currently sponsoring the Addana Surgical Hospital in Addana, the Al Salam Hospital in Marrat Al Numan and the Hiba clinic in Reyhanli, Turkey. In October 2014, One Nation took a convoy of 6 ambulances carrying vital humanitarian aid to the border of Turkey and Syria. Ambulances are urgently needed inside Syria to help transport the injured patients to other nearby hospitals or field clinics. Volunteers from various areas across the country such as London, Birmingham, Leicester and West Yorkshire took part in this expedition in which we travelled through Europe, into Turkey and to the border of Syria where we handed the Ambulances over to our Partner Hospitals. During our visit, our convoy members also donated blood at a border hospital in turkey and delivered food parcels to the displaced Syrian refugees inside Turkey and Syria. One Nation personnel also completed the Qurbani of Eid-Ul-Adha for many of our donors. 6 UK ambulance convoy travelled through europe in october 2014 delivering vital aid to syrian refugees & hospitals PAGE PAGE 8
FLOUR FOR BREAD education & Madressahs Before the crisis began in March 2011, Syria could point to a healthy record in basic education. An estimated 97 per cent of primary-age children were attending school, as were 67 per cent of secondary-age children. Literacy rates country-wide were high, at over 90 per cent for both men and women 1. In fact, Syria s literacy rates surpassed the regional average on a par with those of Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, and higher than Iraq and Egypt. 5 years of brutal conflict in Syria have reversed more than a decade of progress in children s education. There are today more than 5 million Syrian children of school age. Inside Syria, 2.5 million of them are not in school, while more than a million refugee children are not in school outside Syria. The numbers are rising by the day. One Nation is now sponsoring one school and madressah for the displaced Syrian children in Turkey and two schools and madressah inside Syria. The age ranges from 4-16 years old and the schools also provide vital psychological support for the affected children of the crisis. Thanks to your donations, One Nation will continue to provide the education that all children deserve no matter where they live or how difficult the circumstances are. More than six million Syrians have been displaced, and over half of those have fled to neighbouring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq and become refugees. Millions more have been left in poor living conditions with shortages of food and water. Thanks to your donations, One Nation are now sending trucks full of flour to make fresh bread which helps to feed thousands of people in the refugee camps and in the most needy areas inside Syria. WATER WELL PROJECTS The lack of clean water and sanitation in crowded, makeshift settlements is an urgent concern. Diseases like cholera and polio can easily spread, and are made even more life-threatening without the correct medical services. In the areas with the largest refugee populations, water shortages have reached emergency levels; the supply is as low as 30 liters per person per day one-tenth of what the average uk resident uses. One Nation are now producing water wells inside Syria that will help to provide fresh clean water to the most needy. Each water well project costs around 1400 depending on the area In-Sha-Allah and can also be a Sadqah Jaariya project (Ongoing charity). PAGE PAGE 1 0
CONTAINER AID uk PROJECTS Around 5.8 million people in the UK live in deep poverty, making it hard for them to afford every day essentials, including food. The implications of poverty are vast and as a community, we have a responsibilty to look after our neighbours in order to build a just, caring and loving society. Ibn Az-Zubair reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbor to his side goes hungry. One Nation has been actively involved in various homeless/needy projects across West Yorkshire for around 3 years and have identified the need to help those who are struggling with the essentials such as food, blankets, toiletries, as well providing psychological support for the disaffected. We are currently working with existing food banks in the West Yorkshire area, but our long-term aims are to establish our own projects with trained, qualified personnel who can help build a better future for our neighbours in need. One Nation continues to send containers full of aid to the most needy areas inside Syria Aid Delivered Tinned Food & Other Non Perishable Foods Cooking Oil Medical Supplies Baby Milk & Other Baby Supplies Clothing New Shoes Blankets Toiletries School Equipment & Stationery Children Gift Boxes & Much More PAGE PAGE 12
GAZA PROJECTS CLEAN WATER Current Projects WINTER AID Half a million people displaced 22,000 homes damaged or destroyed GAZA S INFRASTRUCTURE OBLITERATED IFTAR IN RAMADAN MEDICAL AID The devastation caused during last year s conflict in Gaza was unprecedented. The conflict may be over, but the nightmare isn t. An estimated 108,000 Palestinians are now homeless with limited access to food, water, medicine, electricity and lighting. One Nation is now working on many projects in Gaza such as the distribution of food parcels and clean water, providing education, supplying food for iftar in Ramadan as well as rebuilding homes and providing medication to those that need it the most. Our partners operate in all areas of the Gaza strip and we work closely with the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis to get medical aid to the most needy. We re doing all we can to help rebuild lives in Gaza, but the road is long. We can do nothing without your help. FOOD PARCELS EDUCATION DONATE NOW PAGE PAGE 1 4
BANGLADESH PROJECTS We teamed up with Sheikh Kaleem-Ullah Madrassah which is based in Banyachong, Bangladesh and provide the following support Hifz & Alim Sponsorship for 1 year Water Well Projects Sponsor the Madressah bosnia PROJECTS Continuous, heavy rainfall in May 2014 resulted in extensive flooding in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The floods were the worst since records began 120 years ago and thousands of people had to evacuate their homes leaving everything behind. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, over a million people were affected by flooding, almost 90,000 were displaced, and 25 casualties were recorded. The severe and widespread rains triggered over 3,000 landslides, hitting 75,000 houses, of which 25,000 were severely damaged or destroyed. The damage caused to people s livelihoods was extensive. Water and Sanitation facilities were severely damaged, causing diseases and other health problems. Your donations were used to buy emergency food parcels and were delivered by the One Nation team to the most affected areas. 1,000,000 AFFECTED 3,000 LANDSLIDES 90,000 DISPLACED 75,000 HOMES HIT 25 CASUALTIES 25,000 DESTROYED Helping Poor Families The Madrassah is based in rural village in Banyachong, in the Hobigonj District. Banyachong is the largest village in the whole of Bangladesh, and is populated by over 200,000 people. It is situated in between the main rural highway making it easily accessible for many people across the region. Established in 2010, Sheikh Kaleem Ullah Madrassah accommodates approximately 300 students, and are looking to enrol more students in the near future, In-Sha-Allah. Future plans are to accommodate 1000 students in a multi-complex building. Education is essential and urgently needed all over Bangladesh. In-Sha-Allah, with your help, we will continue providing the education and skills that these children deserve. PAGE PAGE 1 6
