Hobbies: Being out in nature, skiing, hiking, snorkeling and mountain biking. Reading, growing food and gardening. If there was one thing in the world you could change, what would it be? How about the elimination of greed? Greed has played a major role in the history of power, war, slavery, poverty and starvation. We have seen the damage of greed in recent times with the sub prime mortgages and the Ponzi schemes. Favorite Petaluma hangout: La Cresta Ridge, Helen Putnam Park and Schollenberger Park. How would you describe yourself? Fun loving and caring, A good mother and a seasoned architect. Forever, a student, and happy to be alive on planet Earth. My dad was an engineer who made, fixed and designed everything himself, said Dooley. My mom was a teacher and a deeply compassionate person. My parents showed me how to solve practical problems, creatively and sensitively, using my heart and my head. As a teenager, I imagined architecture to be a combination of science and art, and that seemed like a good fit. Dooley grew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains in a home her father designed. She went on to earn a bachelor s degree at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley and began her career working on a project that introduced her to Petaluma. 4 I was asked to design a freezer addition for Wendy s in Petaluma, said Dooley. I had never heard of Petaluma and fast food was frowned upon by my family, since they started the first natural foods store in Los Gatos. I haven t done any fast food or chain stores since The affordability of housing in Petaluma at the time eventually lured Dooley and husband Chris Lynch to purchase a home in the Oak Hill-Brewster district near downtown 20 years ago. The location, the downtown, the river and the family community is what we enjoy about Petaluma, said Dooley. Petaluma has a great climate for growing fruit and vegetables, which we do on our small lot. I love the easy access to some of my favorite beaches, forests, creeks and San Francisco. My sons enjoy the many sports options in town. That dream became a reality in 2003 when she and her architect husband launched Mad Architecture. The name started out as an acronym, but has evolved into a partnership with my husband, said Dooley. It has layers of meaning. We playfully say it stands for Mom And Dad' architecture because of the personal care we bring to every project and client. dooley said their firm handles a wide variety of projects in the North Bay. In Petaluma alone, Mad Architecture has worked on the Petaluma Library Addition, Sienna Antique's renovation, interior work on Dempsey's Brewery and many homes in the Oakhill Brewster district.her firm also took on the design of the Petaluma Arts Center, which opened in 2008. Our design projects have been awarded six times by The American Institute of Architecture, said Dooley. Four of our projects have received regional historic preservation awards. We were taught that being an architect means having the ability to solve any design problem regardless of the project type. Rather than being in a niche and repeating one project type, we see that being generalists keeps our solutions fresh. each project offers its own set of challenges, but Dooley finds the creative process and problem solving of deisgn satisfying. I love stepping into someone else's world, understanding what they do, how they move through a space, what they need, what they want to experience or achieve with the design opportunity, she said. It is always specific to the location and the use. That is why every design solution is unique. dooley is also a board member of the Petaluma Arts Page 4 of 9

5 Center and member of the city's Public Art Committee. The committee's goal is to have a rich and diverse public art program serving Petaluma's citizens and visitors, said Dooley. A vibrant culture makes a vibrant city. So far, five art pieces have been installed directly or indirectly due to the Public Art Ordinance and three are pending development. with so much on her plate, Dooley admitted that it's her job parenting three boys that takes the majority of her energy.
