This year, Election Day was on Tuesday, November 7th. On Election Day, citizens of the United States can vote by popular ballot for candidates for public offices at local, state and national levels. In even numbered years, federal elections are always held. In years divisible by four, presidential elections are always held. Cleveland s 56th Mayor, Frank G. Jackson, took office January 2, 2006. He has since been re-elected three times - in 2009 and 2013 and last week. Mayor Jackson is focused on ensuring that the city offers an excellent quality of life for every resident, business and visitor. He is addressing every aspect of City operations and policy to guarantee that he reaches that goal. Mayor Frank Jackson was re-elected for his 4th term as Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Ward 2 Councilman Zack Reed has been a member of Council since 2001, representing the southeast area of the city. He ran against Frank Jackson for the Mayor of Cleveland. Councilman Reed s legislative efforts have focused on public safety, resident empowerment, and improvements of schools in his ward. Reed held a news conference on Tuesday at his East Side campaign headquarters. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson outraised and outspent his challenger by a wide margin, according to reports filed with the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Jackson had more than double what Reed had available to spend on the election. Jackson's campaign had more than $83,500 on hand, while Reed had nearly $34,500. It s easy to see that Mayor Frank Jackson was ahead by a big margin. The winner of this year s election was incumbent Mayor Frank Jackson. Jeffrey Mays I AM THANKFUL FOR THE FOODS I EAT ON THANKSGIVING Terrence Dunlap Kesha Grullon Anthony Santiago Tra von Williams TURKEY Muna Ghising HAM Rami Bizongwako Breanna Suhm APPLE PIE THANK THE VETERANS Tra von Williams Veteran s Day is an official holiday in the United States, usually celebrated on November 11. On this day we honor the many people who have served our country. The holiday has been celebrated annually for 98 years. Veteran s Day ended World War 1 hostilities between allied nations and Germany in 1918. The meaning of Veteran s Day is to acknowledge the peace. There are many parades and church services and the American flag is hung at half mast. I believe every day should be Veteran s Day. We cannot thank the people who served our country enough. Veterans should have at least a month of us celebrating them. I am grateful for brave people who go out and fight for our country. They are our heroes. What is Thanksgiving? Kesha Grullon In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast. It is acknowledged today as one of the first thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. Long before Europeans settled in North America, festivals of thanks and celebrations of harvest took place. These took place in the month of October. The first celebration took place in North America in 1578. Traditional foods are a large part of Thanksgiving celebrations. Many families, including my entire family, help in the food preparation. Traditional foods include turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Many people serve pie for dessert at the end of the meal. What do you and your family eat on Thanksgiving? We just stay home Luis Every year on thanksgiving Alexis Youses Noyola When Thanksgiving comes I stay at home and watch TV with my brother and aunt. My aunt makes us pouille, rice, chicken, and postelillos. When my aunt is done making food, we sit down at the tables and eat. What do we eat? William Jones On Thanksgiving my mom cooks all of the food. She cooks pie, macaroni and cheese, chicken, turkey, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, greens, cheesecake, and garlic bread. They buy lots of juice, water and pop for us to drink. Then when it s all done we sit down at the table and eat. Every year on Thanks giving my family and I decide to stay at home and enjoy watching TV while my grandmother and aunt cook all day. They make the famous turkey with mashed potatoes and oven beans. I love when my grandmother makes a banana pie, cakes and ice cream with Oreos. Page 3

2k17-2k18 CROSS COUNTRY- Terrence Dunlap The 2017-2018 Cross Country team participated in all of the Senate meets along with Saturday meets. These were held at Tri-C, Forest Hills, and Madison District. The team was well represented by Roger Hakizimana and Yaz Irizarry. Unfortunatel,y the rest of the runners were inconsistent with making it to practice. Many of the runners are first or second year runners. If the team can make it to practice they will be in the running to bring home a Senate Championship trophy for the next few years. Coach Sarantopoulis would like to thank his assistant coach Joel Tomkowski for his advice, knowledge and guidance. Also,he would like to thank Ms. Holloway for supporting the team by coming to see them run on many different occasions. Coach Omar also deserves recognition for encouraging his basketball players to join the team. 0-10 SEASON Trinity Scarbro HARDSHIPS WITH OUR CHAMPIONS! Terrence Dunlap Our soccer team won the Senate Championship then went to the OHSAA playoffs and lost 6-0 to Lakewood. They had one good player #3--Malvin G. who scored the first two goals. We played well, but they had 8 seniors and 3 juniors with more experience than our 6 freshman, 4 sophomores, 1 junior and 1 senior. On Friday, October 27 our Lincoln West Wolverines played their last football game of the season against East Tech. With this game, their record was 0-10. It was a rough season for them seeing that the team was small. Our seniors, Cortez Robinson, Jarhod Wilson, Maxwell Harris, Jeffery Mays and Terrence Dunlap were a little more disappointed than the rest of the team since it was their last season playing high school football. Junior Jarvon Williams was slightly less disappointed since he has one more year. Most of the team was made up of freshmen and sophomores with no experience. They put up a good fight against all teams they played, but it just wasn t enough to come out on top. Page 4

NATIONAL RECYCLING DAY Jeffrey Mays Each year on November 15, millions of people across the United States take part in America Recycles Day, a day which was created to raise awareness about recycling and the purchasing of recycled products. America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national initiative, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Each year, on Nov. 15 and the weeks leading up, thousands of communities across the country participate by promoting environmental citizenship and taking action to increase and improve recycling in America. Every year people recycle things such as shampoo bottles, plastic bags and plastic bottles. The national recycling rate has increased over the past 30 years. America Recycles Day was started was started in 1997 by the National Recycling Coalition. Since 2009, this day has been a program of Keep America Beautiful. There are events across the United States to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. It is sponsored by private and public entities and the Environmental Protection Agency. Although America may not enjoy much of a reputation for environmentalism on the global stage, in some U.S. cities, recycling levels are much higher than others. NATIONAL ADOPTION DAY Breanna Suhm National Adoption day is when courts and communities in the United States come together to finalize thousands of open adoptions. This day is to raise awareness of more than 110,000 children in foster care waiting for a permanent home. In 2016, 4,700 kids were adopted. Gay couples can rarely adopt children. Having children is difficult for gay couples. For a lesbian couple, this usually involves finding a male donor or visiting a sperm bank and then having one of the couple become pregnant. The other parent in such a partnership then can become a legal second parent through stepparent or second parent adoption. Gay men can also become legal parents of a child in a similar fashion through the use of a surrogate mother. Not all states allow such adoption, however. In Florida, state laws prohibit any "homosexual" from adopting a child as well as second parent adoptions. So many kids are in foster care because of physical, mental or sexual abuse. Truancy, abandonment, and incarceration of the natural parent could also lead to kids being stuck in a foster home. When a child must be placed in foster care, they can also be considered a juvenile offender or a runaway. Page 5
