Business and Politics: Do They Mix? 1

We are operating in a new, unpredictable landscape Here s What a Trump Tweet Does to a Company s Share Price Are Trump s tweets a boost or a blow to companies? How Trump's tweets also hit companies' credit risk 2

Companies are trying to navigate this environment Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world. As a matter of principle, I ve resigned from the President s Council over the #ParisAgreement withdrawal. Today s decision is a setback for the environment and for the U.S. s leadership position in the world. #ParisAgreement "We are deeply disappointed by the recent shift in climate policy. Climate change is a serious global threat and... the world will need to radically redesign industrial systems and economies in order to enable a low-carbon growth economy. -- Nike statement Exxon Investors Show Support for Paris Agreement Despite President Trump s Stance We believe climate change is real. We believe that the world needs to go through an energy transition to prevent a very significant rise in global temperatures. And we need to be part of that solution in making it happen. -- Shell CEO Ben van Beurden 3

All this is taking place in a highly charged, highly partisan environment Which statement do you agree with more? (Gallup, November 16) Americans are divided when it comes to the most important values 63 66 74 65 69 77 Americans are united when it comes to the most important values 32 31 24 34 29 21 1994 1998 2002 2006 2014 2016 How much do you agree with each of the following statements (GSG, April 17) Government faces too much gridlock to address important issues facing society Government doesn t share my values when it comes to addressing important issues facing society Agree 77 77 Disagree 23 23 4

This creates an opportunity for companies to take a stand on important issues 88% of respondents agree that corporations have the power to influence social change. 81% agree that companies should take action to address important issues facing society. 5

In fact, Americans believe corporations have the responsibility to act Eight of 10 Americans believe that corporations are responsible for bringing social change on important issues, just behind Congress and the President. 6

Despite polarization, Americans are accepting of nuance Do you think corporations should work with the Trump administration? All of the time Some of the time None of the time All Americans 26 53 22 How would you describe companies who sometimes support, sometimes oppose Trump administration policies? 7

Companies that pick a side are viewed through a more partisan lens How would you describe companies who publicly support Trump administration policies? How would you describe companies who publicly oppose Trump administration policies? 8

Some corporate stances are more polarizing than others Polarized politics and brand perception We took a look at how the divisions in the electorate intersect with stances corporation take. We tested the impact on their respective brands of nearly 20 different stances taken by companies recently. The amount to which the impact is different between Democrats and Republicans, we call the GSG Polarization Score. The higher the number, the more polarizing the issue for the brand. 9

Americans reflexively assign ideology to brands Our Business and Politics study has been cited widely on this subject: Businesses Taking Political Positions Risk Polarization 10

Americans are increasingly willing to accept corporate positions on a range of issues Seven of 10 Americans say that corporations should stand up for what they believe politically, regardless of whether or not it is controversial. 11

Americans accept corporate engagement is good for good and good for business 12

Motivation matters When is it okay for a company to support the Trump administration? If it helps the/ their: When is it okay for a company to oppose the Trump administration? If it hurts the/ their: 13
