WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 1 of 4) Alamo The Alamo is a former fort in Texas that was the site of a famous battle on March 6, 1836. The battle of the Alamo was fought between Mexican forces and Americans who wanted Texas to be independent of Mexico. Mexican soldiers surprised the defenders of the Alamo just before dawn and killed almost everyone inside. Daniel Boone Daniel Boone was an hunter and explorer who became one of the most famous frontiersmen in U.S. history. Daniel Boone helped to settle the state of Kentucky. Daniel Boone was known for his adventurous spirit. Davy Crockett Davy Crockett grew up in Tennessee and served in the Creek War (1813 14) under Andrew Jackson. Among other things, Davy Crockett was a politician who served in the Tennessee State Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives. Davy Crockett became a folk hero after being captured and killed in battle at the Alamo.

WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 2 of 4) frontier A frontier is a place that has not been explored. Some people say that space is the new frontier. The Mississippi River was once considered the edge of the western frontier of the United States. gold rush A gold rush is a dramatic movement of people into an area where gold has been found. A gold rush brought many people to Alaska who might not have traveled there otherwise. A gold rush attracts people who hope to get rich quickly. Indian Removal Act The Indian Removal Act was an 1830 law authorizing the forced removal of Native Americans from the Southeast to west of the Mississippi River. The Indian Removal Act was signed by President Andrew Jackson, a strong advocate for U.S. expansionism. Supporters of the Indian Removal Act believed that the United States was justified in taking Native American lands.

WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 3 of 4) Lewis and Clark Lewis and Clark left St. Louis in 1804 to explore the Louisiana Purchase and the Pacific Northwest. Along their journey, Thomas Jefferson hoped that Lewis and Clark would successfully map the rivers, meet the natives, and find an easy water route from coast to coast. It took Lewis and Clark over two years to complete their expedition. Louisiana Purchase The Louisiana Purchase was a large territory just west of the Mississippi River sold by France to the United States in 180 The Louisiana Purchase doubled the area of the United States at the time and is about onequarter of the modern day United States. The United States paid a little over $23 million for the Louisiana Purchase. Oregon Trail The Oregon Trail was a wagon route from St. Louis to present day Oregon. Thousands of pioneers traveled the Oregon Trail seeking riches on the Pacific coast. The Oregon Trail was opened in 1842, and by 1845 more than 3,000 migrants had traveled over it.

WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 4 of 4) Sacagawea Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian woman, was a valuable member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. As a teenager, Sacagawea served the Expedition as a guide and interpreter. The only woman on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sacagawea carried her infant son on her back as they traveled. Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president, was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. While president, Thomas Jefferson acquired the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. Thomas Jefferson left office in 1809 and retired to Monticello, which he built himself. War of 1812 The War of 1812 was fought mostly in North America. Great Britain and the United States fought the War of 1812 over control of Canada and other areas of North America. Little territory was gained or lost on either side in the War of 1812, so it is often overlooked by history.
