Rise of new ideas that society should be based on freedom and equal laws and opportunities for all. 6. Any other relevant point. (Any five points to be explained) x1= The system of estates in French society was organized:- 1. Peasants made up about 90 per cent of the population. However, only a small number of them owned the land they cultivated. About 60 per cent of the land was owned by nobles, the Church and other richer members of the third estate. 2. The members of the first two estates, that is, the clergy and the nobility, enjoyed certain privileges by birth. The most important of these was exemption from paying taxes to the state. 3. The nobles further enjoyed feudal privileges. These included feudal dues, which they extracted from the peasants. Peasants were obliged to render services to the lord; to work in his house and fields, to serve in the army or to participate in building roads. 4. The Church too extracted its share of taxes called tithes from the peasants, and finally, all members of the third estate had to pay taxes to the state.. These included a direct tax, called taille, and a number of indirect taxes which were levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt or tobacco. The burden of financing activities of the state through taxes was borne by the third estate alone. 1x= 20 1. The Nazi regime used language and media with care, and often to great effect for popularizing its racial world view. 2. Nazis never used the words kill or murder in their official communications. The most infamous film was The Eternal Jew. Orthodox Jews were stereotyped and marked. 1x= 1. Hitler assigned the responsibility of economic recovery to the economist Hjalmar Schacht who aimed at full production and full employment through a state-funded workcreation programme. This project produced the famous German superhighways and the people s car, the Volkswagen. 2. In foreign policy also Hitler acquired quick successes. He pulled out of the League of Nations in 1933, reoccupied the Rhineland in 1936, and integrated Austria and Germany in 1938 under the slogan, One people, One empire, and One leader. He then went on to wrest German speaking Sudentenland from Czechoslovakia, and gobbled up the entire country. In all of this he had the unspoken support of England, which had considered the Versailles verdict too harsh. These quick successes at home and abroad seemed to reverse the destiny of the country. 3.
