Page 2 Letter from the President It has been a very busy few months for the COS and your new Board of Directors. As you know from last month s article, we are having some very exciting venue changes for shows in 2016 and 2017. Your show chairs, board, and committees have been working very hard to make these events a success and to make the new locations a draw for the future. The COS will have the show on Sunday in York, Pennsylvania in November at the same hotel as in the past at the Wyndham Garden. Then our new location at the Doubletree by Hilton in Orlando for December: followed in March 2017 with the Reston, Virginia show at the Sheraton Reston. Finally in May, we go to a new hotel in Atlanta, the Sheraton Atlanta Airport. I hope that you will all give these shows your support and attendance. I think you will find these locations a nice change of pace and it will allow you and your friends to enjoy new cities. I have thought a great deal in the past few months about the tremendous amount of commitment I have seen from volunteers who work for this club and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels we are so committed to protect. The logo for the CKCSC, USA is Forever Guardians of the Cavalier. I have read that logo for several years, but have never really thought about it in detail until becoming president of the COS. As I have watched members over the past three months volunteer to help make shows, meetings, fun matches and other activities successful, I realize how truly blessed these Spaniels are to have an entire organization caring for them. According to the dictionary, a guardian is a defender, protector, or keeper. The Club and its members are all of the above. The CKCSC, USA and its Regional Clubs are made up of members who work countless hours to be the guardians of this breed. Our health clinics assure we do the best we can to protect the health and wellbeing of the Cavalier. The seminars we provide at events all over the country bring together some of the top people in breeding, health and nutrition to make sure we protect our breed with knowledge and the best information available in animal husbandry. Our conformation shows set a standard that we must keep and improve upon, and finally the many social events give the guardians a time to mentor, exchange information and enjoy the strong commitment we all share for the CKCS. There is room for all of us who love this breed to make a difference. From those of you who enjoy the companionship of a wonderful pet, to those who show and do obedience, there is room for you to help make a difference for this breed. Please continue to be a member, recruit members, help by volunteering and insure our club defends, protects and keeps this breed sustainable for future generations to enjoy. Pat Mixon President, COS

COS AGM Minutes from May 2016 B. Membership Committee-Pat Mixon We need to make sure that we are getting information to Sharon Utych so that it can be included on the website as well as in the newsletter. We would like to have our new puppy owners refer to the COS website to learn more about the COS and become involved in our club. Kevin Cline recommended going to cavaliersofthesouth.org to print the 15 page "New Members Handbook" and give it to the new owner and/or send them the link to this document. This "new member document" has lots of useful information for the new cavalier owners including nutritional support, healthcare, as well as club sponsored activities they can enjoy with their new family member. Also take a picture of the puppy with their new owners and send it to Sharon Utych to upload on the website.,most Importantly, refer the new owners to our site. Be sure to obtain their permission to publish their photo. This will help new members to immediately feel included and simultaneously help them learn about the COS. C. Social Media Committee-Kevin Cline Kevin discussed the COS website and provided the web address and again reiterated the importance of referring our new puppy owners to this website. He mentioned the mentor section of the website and asked anyone interested in serving as a mentor to a new owner to call Pat Mixon in order to be added to the mentor list. We want to include our new puppy owners in our Club. Kevin also thanked Sharon Utych for her dedication to both the website and our newsletter "The Southern Cavalier". D. Trophy Committee Pat Mixon Everything went smoothly with the COS trophies this year for our Trophy Specialty Show. Pat Mixon announced the new COS Trophy Chairs Amanda and Matt Madden who will be taking over this COS position. The transition to our new trophy chairs Amanda and Matt should be very smooth as they have helped us the last two years and will do a great job. E. Treasurer s report Elizabeth Gerkin General board discussion about the COS shows, and their profitability. A treasury roprot was submitted and discussed by Elizabeth Gerkin. Motion by Shannon Schilling to accept the Treasury report, seconded by Pat Mixon. Support Cavalier Rescue USA. The South needs FOSTER VOLUNTEERS BADLY! We have very limited resources especially in GA. Cavaliers that come into rescue in GA most often have to be transported to another state because of the lack of fosters. PLEASE VISIT WWW.CAVALIERRESCUEUSA.ORG TO SIGN UP AND VOLUNTEER! Page 9

COS AGM Minutes from May 2016 Autumn 2016 F. Nominating Committee-Hollis Land In November, the nominating committee began the process of replacing quite a few new people for the board. Four board members are timing out for service to the club. The nominating committee members consist of Pat Lander, Elizabeth Gerkin, Juhan Mixon, Ricky Perkins and Hollis Land as Chairman. After a great deal of consideration and discussion, and by unanimous decision, the Nominating Committee put forth the following slate for 2016: President -Pat Mixon, Vice President Rachel Venier Secretary Shannon Schilling Treasurer-Polly McCauley; Directors - Caryna Baker-Fox, Mimi Hodges, Michele Lander, Gwen Wells, Howard Bales; Representative to the National Board Kevin Cline This slate was uncontested and therefore accepted unanimously. G. Awards Kevin graciously presented each of the COS Show Chairs for the May 2015- May 2016 show season with a hand painted gift for their service during this time. Charing a show takes time and dedication. Additionally, he mentioned, that its a great way to help the club and get to know other members. If anyone would like to volunteer in this capacity, please contact Pat Mixon. Additionally, Kevin announced this years recipient of the Heart of the South award as Paula Ayers. Paula has served the COS in multiple capacities for twenty years of dedicated selflessness. She is a true representative of the award. A. Review of Upcoming Shows II. NEW BUSINESS December 2016 - Our winter specialty will be held in Orlando, FL at the Hilton Doubletree Hotel at Universal Studio. It is close to the airport with plenty of dining and entertainment options nearby. The COS Board thought it was important to try to include (and therefore increase the participation) of our numerous Florida members. In that regard the COS is looking for a GREAT turn out for this exciting new venue. For the July SHow - Michelle Lander and Shannon Shilling are Chairing the COS Sunday in Indianapolis, IN, with Tanya Engle judging. They are looking for volunteers. For March 2017 The COS moves to a new venue in Reston, VA. This hotel is within 10 minutes of the Dulles Airport ( Washington DC) with shuttle service. There will be an breakfast included each day. Please Plan to attend. B. Discussion about the Upcoming 2018 National In October 2018, the COS will host the CKCSC National. Kevin Cline is working on securing a venue at this time, and has a lead on a great location. The location that is being scouted for the 2018 National CKCSC, USA Show is Calloway Gardens, in Georgia. Calloway Gardens is a lovely, historical property and a fantastic venue for a dog show offering on site outdoor activities such as golf, hiking trails, a butterfly house and a birds of prey show. Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Linda Whitmire, and seconded by Gwen Wells. Motion passed unanimously. Meeting adjourned 6:05pm Respectfully submitted, Shannon Schilling Secretary, Cavaliers of the South Page 10
