2 President's Message I can hardly believe that summer has flown past and it s September. At this rate, Christmas can only be a week away! Although the club has been on a meeting break since May, your club and its leaders have been quite busy and, although we are in the final stretch of my term as President, there is much still on the horizon. Joanie and Bruce Bain hosted our Summer CHAT at their home held with Magic Circle and it was a wonderful event. Harris County Chair Paul Simpson updated us all on his plans to help ensure the election of Republicans in our county- something that we can all get behind. A huge thanks to Joanie and Bruce for opening their lovely home and their incredible hospitality. You should know that Village Republican Women will be awarded the highest level of club achievement at the National Federation of Republican Women s Biennial Convention in Arizona this month. You will be represented by Joanie Bain and me, and we look forward to showing the nation what we do here at Village RW. The Texas Federation of Republican Women s Biennial Convention will be held in November in Lubbock and Village will be well represented there, too. To the delegates who were chosen at the May meeting, you ll be getting your registration forms soon. Awards Chair Beverly Roberts has completed the forms for the TFRW John Goodwin Tower Award of Excellence, and I m proud to say that VRW will be receiving the highest level of recognition. Again. And it s because of the work and dedication that you show our club. This month our program will be the Candidate s Forum for the City of Houston Mayoral Election. Our Programs VP, Joanie Bain, has done great work gathering commitments from all but one of the candidates. I want to thank the West Houston Chamber of Commerce for co-sponsoring the event. Be sure to attend even if you don t live in the city of Houston this election matters. The person who is elected will lead one of the largest cities in the nation and his actions will impact the entire region for decades to come. It is critical to know as much as you can about the men who would like to hold the reins of so much power and influence. Get informed, and then get involved. In all the municipal elections; they all matter. Another exciting event this fall will be our Salute to Veterans luncheon on November 18th. We have great plans to show our veterans that Village Republican Women is proud to honor those that have served to protect our rights, our families and our country. Watch for details in the coming weeks. Planning for our Roaring 20 s Gala fundraiser on November 20 th is well underway and you will NOT want to miss this opportunity to be a part of this event, and maybe even find your way into our VIP Speakeasy. Watch for announcements and detail. Finally, please put the evening of December 6 th on your calendars. Kathaleen Wall and her husband, Holly Frost, are hosting our annual VRW Christmas party at their home and I m sure it will be another wonderful event. My thanks to Kathaleen and Holly for opening their hearts and home to our club this year. Theresa 2
3 Caring for the USA In May Village Republican Women sent $800 to the Fisher Houses at the DeBakey VA Medical Center. The funds are to be used for bedclothes, sheets, and pillows, and also towels as needed. We all are aware of what constant use and daily washings can do to sheets and towels, that get the most use at Fisher Houses, so our donation was welcomed and will be well used. Frank Kelley, Manager of Fisher Houses, is very appreciative of our support in aiding recovering veterans and their families, to be able to use facilities of a comfortable place to stay that is on the premises of the VA property, so that they can be close to their physicians and the hospital. $2000 was budgeted this year for Americanism, so $1200 remain that we propose to use in our program honoring veterans in November. 3

6 Minutes from May 27, 2015 The meeting was held on Wednesday, May 27 at Vallones Restaurant, 100 Memorial City, Houston Texas A quorum was present. The meeting was called to order by President Theresa Kosmoski at 11:30am. Fran Marintsch delivered the invocation and led the pledges to the American and Texas flags. President Kosmoski made guest introductions followed by candidate introductions. Candidates present were Matt Murphy, candidate for City Council At Large Position 4 and Sandi Mullins Moger, candidate for District G. President Kosmoski conducted the general business portion of the meeting. There were no amendments proposed to the minutes scripted by Katherine Dawson from the April meeting. The minutes were approved as written. Diane Sloan provided a treasurer s report. All current entries have been inputted and the current budget report was made available on the tables. Any questions should be directed to Diane Sloan. President Kosmoski presented the campaign report on behalf of Kathaleen Wall. Theresa directed members attention to a handout on the table. Kathaleen created a spreadsheet of Republican Candidates in 2015 Houston City Elections. This spreadsheet will allow members to get involved in a campaign of their choice. President Kosmoski also announced that Carolyn Hodges had logged over 2000 volunteer hours, the most volunteer hours for VRW. Christine Howard provided a Gala update. The Roaring Twenties gala will be held on Friday, November at Lakeside Country Club, 100 Wilcrest Drive. Christine said that planning was underway and now was the time for VRW members to start looking for donations. Two forms were available on the tables for suggested items for donation, including a vendor donation form. Deanna Harrington gave a brief legislative update. The legislative session is wrapping up with bills headed to the Governor s office. Deanna expressed gratitude for support during the session. President Kosmoski provided a copy of Parliamentary Basics to members. VRW receives points for providing this information to members. New Business: There were New Standing Rules proposed for adoption. 29: The following policies shall be in effect for the financial accounts of the club: A. There shall be no debit or credit card issued on any account. B. The President, the Treasurer and the 1st Vice President shall be signers on the financial accounts. Two (2) signatures shall be required on all checks and no cash withdrawals are permitted. C. Only a minimum balance (enough to cover anticipated budgetary expenses, or as directed by the Board) shall be kept in the checking account; excess funds will be held in a separate savings account. The only permitted transaction on any savings account will be transfers to and from the checking account. D. In all cases except an emergency, a vote of the Board shall be required to transfer funds from the savings account to the checking account. In the event of an emergency, the President may authorize a transfer between accounts but must report the transaction to the Board immediately. The treasurer shall be authorized to execute any transfer of funds between accounts as directed by the Board or the President. 30: The Clubs Post office box is strictly for the benefit of the club and no other use shall be permitted. A motion to approve the proposed new standing rules was made by Nancy Scott with a second by Joanie Bain. The motion received the required 2/3 vote. The next order of new business was the election of the 2015 Nominating Committee. President Kosmoski opened the floor for nominations. The nominees included the following members: Buffie Ingersoll, Joanie Bain, Nolia Rohde, Nancy Scott and Sarah Parr. The floor was closed for nominations and all nominees were elected on a single ballot. The motion passed. 6 Continued on next page
7 The next order of new business was the election of an alternate to the NFRW Convention. The President of VRW will serve as the delegate and Joanie Bain was nominated to serve as the alternate. The motion passed and was followed by a motion by Diane Sloan to empower the President of VRW to appoint another alternate in the event the elected alternate is unable to attend. That motion was seconded by Pam Goodson and passed. The final order of business was the election of delegates and alternates to the TFRW Convention. President Kosmoski opened the floor for the nomination of twelve delegates and twelve alternates. The nominees included: Theresa Kosmoski, Nancy Scott, Diane Sloan, Buffie Ingersoll, Lauren Taylor, Beverly Roberts, Sara Parr, Rajada Fleming, Christine Howard, Ginger Howell, Carol Prince, Nolia Rohde, and Eleanor White. The Alternates included Joanie Bain. A motion was then made by Nancy Scott to empower the President of VRW to appoint alternates for the TFRW convention after the regular meeting was adjourned. The motion received a second by Kathleen Slaydon and was successfully carried. President Kosmoski gave the floor to two candidates to make brief remarks. Those candidates were Matt Murphy (Candidate for At Large Position 4) and Sandi Mullins Moger (Candidate for District G). Tina Gibson reported that the High School Republicans of Texas has a convention on Saturday, June 13 from 11-2:00. They are in need of sponsors. Another event is a workshop on June 27 at the Sugarland Convention Center. Professor Jeffrey Addicott was scheduled to speak on Domestic Jihad and ISIS but was detained at the Dallas airport due to inclement weather. Joanie was able to secure Julianna Lucci Ashley to speak on How to Connect with People in a more Effective Way. Julianna was incredibly engaging and provided some interactive activities for becoming better at networking. She emphasized the importance of asking questions, listening and sharing. With no further business to be heard, President Kosmoski adjourned the meeting at 1:00.
