November 2017 pg 3 Republican Professional Women of St. Tammany Business Meeting Minutes, Wednesday, October 4, 2017 Home of Laurie Pennison Call to Order and Welcome: After social, President Pam Ferguson called the meeting to order. She then led the NFRW prayer and the Pledge of Allegience. Pam welcomed our guests and officials - State Central Committee and our host, Jacki Schneider, Parish Councilwoman & RPEC Member Maureen O Brien, RPEC Member Joyette Rhoden, and those candidates running for office. Pam introduced our first speaker for the evening, Rachel Adair, who presented updates on the Northshore Pregnancy Crisis Center. With her was Michael Mire, President of the Board. They both extended their appreciation for the donations brought to the meeting that night. Pam next introduced Alan Zaunbrecher, Board member for the Northshore Food Bank. Alan educated those present on the outreach programs available throught the Food Bank, not just in Covington, but throughout St. Tammany and into other surrounding parishes. He also expressed gratitude for the Food Bank donations brought to the meeting. Business Meeting and Reports: Minutes: Pam advised that the minutes were given in the RPWST September newsletter and asked if any corrections were needed. No corrections were needed thus the minutes were approved and accepted as posted. Membership: Samantha Goodwin announced that we have 46 members Treasury: Barbara Phillips gave the treasury report. A copy may be made available at a member s request. Nomination Committee: Georgian Weilbaecher gave the report of the Nomination Committee, presenting the following slate of officers for 2018 - President Pam Ferguson 1st VP Samantha Goodwin 2nd VP Donna Harvin Recording Secretary Daphne Misuraca Corresponding Secretary Brenda Morton Treasurer Jackie Schneider New Business: Candidates for office were given an opportunity to address the group - Alan Zaunbrecher running for 22nd Judicial District Court, Division H and Jay Adair running for 22nd Judicial District Court, Division E. Pam announced the upcoming LFRW Fall meeting the end of this month and that our next meeting will be at K-Gees with Judge Schwartz discussing the VA Court. She thanked Susan Strain for representing our club at the NFRW Biennial meeting. Susan gave a brief report on the Biennial. In recognition of National Military Family Appreciation Month, Judge Childress will speak about the VA specialty court. Also, in November & December we are participating the Mamie Eisenhower Library Project. The St. Tammany Parish School Board has helped us identify a school that needs our help. This High School is in need of biographies. Their selection is very small and limited, so, we have identified some books that will help. You can bring any of these books to our November and December meetings. We will also be accepting donations and one of our Board Members will buy books from the list below. In the run-off election we will be deciding two very important positions - State Treasurer and 77th District State Representative Don t let these positions be determined by less than 1/4th of our population. Call you friends, neighbors and family, here and across the state. Support your candidate in any way that you can. Let s get out the VOTE!!!!!
Volunteers Needed June 2016 pg 8 At our last meeting Councilwoman Maureen O Brien informed us about the need to educate the public about what the millage renewal for Lighting District 6 means and what it means for those living in this district. Maureen is hoping to have groups knocking on doors each weekend until the election. Several members voiced their interest in helping inform residents of the need. November 2017 pg 12 Legislative Report The Trump Administration is ready to work with Congress to achieve three immigration policy objectives to ensure safe and lawful admissions; defend the safety and security of our country; and protect American workers and taxpayers. BORDER SECURITY: Build a southern border wall and close legal loopholes that enable illegal immigration and swell the court backlog. Fund and complete construction of the southern border wall. Authorize the Department of Homeland Security to raise and collect fees from visa services and border-crossings to fund border security and enforcement activities. Ensure the safe and expeditious return of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) and family units. End abuse of our asylum system by tightening standards, imposing penalties for fraud, and ensuring detention while claims are verified. Remove illegal border crossers quickly by hiring an additional 370 Immigration Judges and 1,000 ICE attorneys. Discourage illegal re-entry by enhancing penalties and expanding categories of inadmissibility. Improve expedited removal. Increase northern border security. INTERIOR ENFORCEMENT: Enforce our immigration laws and return visa overstays. Protect innocent people in sanctuary cities. Authorize and incentivize States and localities to help enforce Federal immigration laws. Strengthen law enforcement by hiring 10,000 more ICE officers and 300 Federal prosecutors. End visa overstays by establishing reforms to ensure their swift removal. Stop catch-and-release by correcting judicial actions that prevent ICE from keeping dangerous aliens in custody pending removal and expanding the criteria for expedited removal. Prevent gang members from receiving immigration benefits. Protect U.S. workers by requiring E-Verify and strengthening laws to stop employment discrimination against U.S. workers. Improve visa security by expanding State Department s authority to combat visa fraud, ensuring funding of the Visa Security Program, and expanding it to high-risk posts. MERIT-BASED IMMIGRATION SYSTEM: Establish reforms that protect American workers and promote financial success. End extended-family chain migration by limiting family-based green cards to include spouses and minor children. Establish a points-based system for green cards to protect U.S. workers and taxpayers.
