The Rotary Club of Acton serving Acton, Rockwood & surrounding areas The Minutes of our Rotary Club Meeting of Tuesday, September 18, 2012 President Dick presided. The Rotary Grace was offered by Rotarian Bill (B) and this was followed by a Toast to the Queen. Fifteen members and one guest were in the house. GENERAL This evening, we had a good turnout, as the club activities pick up. Glenn Cheeseman was welcomed into the club as a new Rotarian, and we look forward to his participation in one or more of our key areas. We were pleased to have Dave Kurdell as our guest. He came to tell us about the Special Olympics curling program that he is starting up at the Acton Curling Club. Chaos is inherent in all compounded things. Strive on with diligence. Buddha SPECIAL OLYMPICS CURLING CLUB Dave Kurdell talked about the Special Olympics curling program that he is heading up in Acton. This will be a special curling league for athletes with intellectual disability, aged 10 or older. Once participants have mastered the fundamentals of the sport, they will start competitive play. Dave pointed out that sponsorship is required to purchase basic equipment (e.g. grippers and helmets) for the program. An initial infusion of about $500 is needed. There will be an open house at the Acton Curling Club on Saturday, September 22 nd, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Page 1
WINE AND CHEESE EVENT NOVEMBER 23 Rotarian Bill (B), the committee chairman for the Wine & Cheese event, reported on the status. A meeting of the committee will be held in the near future. A sign design has been created. Rotarian Robert will print the tickets. Meanwhile, the committee will work out further details of the plan. SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR 2012/2013 President Dick mentioned that no action had taken place since last meeting. Rotarian Robert will contact Acton High School to set up a meeting. This is even more important because of our requirement to advertise the Python s Pit program so that we can encourage students to apply as contestants. MEMBERSHIP STRATEGY District 7080 has persons available to help individual clubs prepare strategies for attracting and retaining new members. Rotarian Bob (V) has volunteered to help out in this area. There will be more news on this later. Page 2

All members are urged to do their best to sell their tickets. PYTHON S PIT A question arose as to the status of our commitment to provide $500 to fund a sponsorship at the Python s Pit event. Rotarians Kim, Robert and Dick have committed person al donations to the club to help to offset the amount committed. Also, the organizing committee has announced that they are ready to receive applications form participants. This puts an onus on our club to make sure our schools are aware of this event.
