If you couldn t make it this year, plan on making it to HRU 2007-each year it keeps getting better. Briarcliff College is a great location for this event, and easily accessible by car. Recently, Walter (KA2RGI) spent several hours on a Saturday fine tuning the repeater, and changing the voice message on our 2-meter controller. Please be available to lend a hand when assistance is requested with these projects. Even if you lack the technical skills, it s nice to see what it takes to keep our repeater system functioning properly; a second pair of hands is always useful. Some additional work may be required to eliminate the recent 2-meter interference. If you want to get involved with public service, the Suffolk County Half- Marathon will take place on Sunday, March 26. Contact Walter, KA2RGI if you are interested. OLD MAN WINTER is still out there knocking on our door; do you have your HT batteries charged up just in case? Is your go bag filled & ready with emergency supplies in case of activation? Now is a good time to check. We can still get hit hard during February and March. It would be nice if each month we could have some pictures featuring our member s shacks. If you would like to participate please send a digital photo to our editor Ken, N2ZN and he will take it from there. Space is limited, so first come first served. 73, Jay, N2PIK 1

A Note From The Editor Happy New Year and welcome to the first issue of the Compass for the new year! As you can see, I have taken over as editor of the Compass starting with this issue, and I hope to be able to provide some interesting content for your reading pleasure. I would like to start featuring some original content in the newsletter, things written by our own club members as well as myself. I know that we have many people in the club who are great talkers, and would have no problems filling up a page or two with their stories. So, anyone that has something they would like to contribute, please get it to me. The deadline is the weekend after the Board meeting to be featured in that month's Compass. Now, for a short bio about myself: I learned of amateur radio through the WB2RCJ Robert Moses Middle School ARC and earned my Novice license in 1994 and was issued KB2REZ. Subsequent upgrades led to Extra in 1998 and I "vanitized" my call that year to N2ZN. Many aspects of this hobby interest me, but my primary focus is DXing and contesting, and currently am a member of DXCC. I operate mainly CW (and mobile CW) but also use SSB and digital modes as well, contrary to popular belief. In addition to being newsletter editor, I am also the Membership Chairman for the club, and will serve in 2006 as a Field Day cochairman. In the past, I have served as Net Control for many of the club's nets and was net manager for the clubs Junior Operator net from 1995-1999. I served on the Board as a Director in 1998. In addition to GSBARC, I am a member of the ARRL, LIDXA, and YCCC. My current station consists of a Kenwood TS- 940SAT and wire antennas at my home, and a Yaesu FT-857D and ATAS-120 in my car. So, that's enough about me (for now)-any other questions, just ask. So now that I have written a short bio for myself, I invite anyone else out there who would like to do something similar to do so! For the February issue, I would like some people to send me a story about how they got involved in the hobby and their interests in the hobby. It doesn't have to be long. I will feature any that I receive next month. For now, that is all. Get your stories about how you got involved to me for next month. Until then- 73, Ken N2ZN dit dit. GSBARC Membership Renewal Just a reminder that your 2006 GSBARC Dues are due. Dues can be paid in person at any meeting or by sending them to the club's P.O. box. As always, any member whose dues remain unpaid after the March general meeting will be dropped from the roster. Don't let this happen to yourenew early! GUEST SPEAKERS & PROGRAMS: Chairperson Frank, K2LI Date Speaker Topic January Topic open Club Budget was presented to the Board by Jay, N2PIK. A discussion followed about having the amounts of money the club was spending for its various events and if they should be part of the budget now or brought up to the membership just before the event for approval. After a further discussion it was agreed upon that the expenses for Field Day, the annual picnic, and the end of the year party would be reinserted into the budget. A few other line items from the previous years budget were removed because of the concern that there would not be enough funds to cover all items because of the limited membership to calculate the upcoming years expenses. After further discussion an agreement was accepted. The budget was then amended as appears below to be presented to club by the Board. After the budget, Tom, N2MIG brought up a proposal to the Board to amend the Constitution and By-Laws and modify the authority of the Executive Board in certain matters. After a discussion the proposed motion was withdrawn with complete agreement of the board. Walter, KA2RGI also presented to the board for discussion without making a motion, the idea of merging the two secretary positions back into one position as it was in the beginning of the club. The Board discussed the idea and said it would pass it on to the membership for comments. A discussion was also opened from the floor about filling vacant positions on the board when they occur and the procedure to follow. A discussion followed and no motions were made to the board. The process of filling open chairperson positions and getting people to fill those open positions was also discussed and it was clarified that all committee positions are appointments that serve at the pleasure of the President for his\her term and the chairs can be appointed and removed by the President at will as per the constitution. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Tom, N2MIG and seconded by Danny, WB2COO The meeting was adjourned by Jay, N2PIK at 10:40 PM. Respectfully submitted by, Walter M. Wenzel, KA2RGI Recording Secretary Note: The 2006 budget appears on the next page. HEALTH AND WELFARE: Chairperson PattiLynn, KC2AUX 4

GSBARC Shack of the Month This month's shack: N2ZN/M Left photo: FT-857 faceplate, Right photo: Bulldog CW paddles My mobile setup is the setup that I find myself using most of the time-between driving to work and school, I do spend a lot of time in the car. I started putting this setup together in May of 2005 and had it mostly complete by June 2005. The setup is centered around a Yaesu FT-857D transceiver which feeds 100W into the Yaesu ATAS-120 screwdriver antenna. The front panel of the rig is mounted overhead on the part of the ceiling that houses the sunroof controls. The front panel cable then runs through the ceiling of the car, to the back then down into the trunk, where the rig is mounted. The microphone is the standard hand mic that came with the rig, and the CW paddles are clipped to the parking brake. The clip consists of a piece of sheet metal screwed to a clip used to hang broomsticks and such, available at Home Depot. I use a small mag mount occasionally for VHF/UHF FM work. The ATAS-120 has given me excellent performance on all of the HF bands, and has enabled me to work some excellent DX, because I am commuting at times when band conditions are optimal, such as mornings just after sunrise, and evenings during sunset. With this setup, I have worked (re-worked) DXCC all from the mobile, and all continents and most of the CQ Zones. I find the antenna to be an excellent performer all around, as I have made solid QSO's from 40 to 6 meters, CW and SSB. Some countries I have been able to work mobile are VK, JA, UA9, VR2, C2, H40, A6, 6W, CY9, CY0, 4J, 4L, CN, 5Z, 3B8, VQ9, V5, EA9, TZ, 3DA0, R1A, R1M and all over Europe, South America, and North America. It is quite a versatile setup that performs well, and was worth the cost and work to install. I do not have any strange RF problems at all, and the voltage display on the rig is quite helpful, and even helped me troubleshoot the car once! The reduced voltage I found one morning immediately signaled a problem with the car (the alternator had given up the ghost), and without that, I may have not known about the problem until I was out on the road. The rig has plenty of features to keep you busy even when you're not playing radio. The complete parts/equipment list is as follows: Yaesu FT-857D, stock hand mic, remote faceplate kit, Bulldog CW paddles, W4RT 500Hz CW filter, MFJ external speaker, ATAS-120 mobile antenna, Diamond K-400C mobile antenna mount. The power cables had to be extended to reach from the trunk (rig) to the battery, and this was done with #10 wire from Home Depot, and an additional fuse holder was used in this run. Hope to work you /m someday! Want to be featured in Shack of the Month? Just send a picture of your shack to the editor! You don't have to do a writeup on it like this month's shack, but it is welcome. Keep those pictures rolling in... 7
