TOWNSHIP OF EDWARDSBURGH CARDINAL INFORMATION ITEM Committee: Recreation Advisory Committee Date: May 1 st, 2018 Department: Recreation Topic: Recreation Coordinator Update The month of April has quickly come and gone. It s nice to see a lot of people within the community coming out and beginning to enjoy the nice weather. There has been a lot of children on bikes, walking and playing basketball around the Township. The ice surface in Spencerville has been removed and the rink attendants have been working hard painting dressing rooms and doing minor repairs to the Spencerville arena in anticipation for next season. The Ingredion Centre in Cardinal has been busy with spring hockey and figure skating. Randy North runs a spring hockey league out of the Ingredion Centre and it fills the arena weekly. The walking track at the Ingredion Centre continues to be well utilized with many people using it at all times in the day. Plans for the summer have been underway and I feel that this is going to be a fun summer for all. Meetings have taken place this month about the Leaders in Training program and exciting improvements have been made. The program has been changed to include grades 6 to 9, have a new time of 9:00-2:00pm and include many community partners. This month we sadly had to say goodbye to Katie Cooper who has taken on a permanent position in Newmarket Ontario. Katie was the instructor of the Y on the Fly fitness class in Johnstown and will be missed by all. To wish Katie luck in her new position the Township provided doughnuts for the class and many participants brought treats to share with the group. A new instructor has taken over and will continue the classes. The Early ON program continued two days a week this month. The attendance fluctuated significantly but we were very happy to see new families join us. This month the Early ON program participated in a fire drill and families were encouraged to make fire escape plans at home. Unfortunately we have been notified that the Early ON program will conclude in June but optimistic that it will return in the fall.
Alexine from the Township of Cardinal Edwardsburgh Library and myself continued the Afterschool Library Club on Thursday afterschool in Spencerville. Our first session has finished and a new session of 15 children begins in May. Each session is six weeks in duration and the children get to participate in snack, activities and a craft each week. The participation has been overwhelming and a waiting list has been formed for the program. Centennial 67 has been a great resource for the Township. They have been very supportive with assisting with the Afterschool Club and other Township organized endeavours. They hosted their Kindergarten registration this month and I was fortunate to attend and represent Recreation and the Township. Township staff as well as the community and various community partners have been very active in preparing the outdoors for the good weather.
