The Week Ahead 05 11 June 2017 Committee and political group meetings, Brussels Refugees in Italy. Civil Liberties Committee MEPs will assess the current situation of refugees and migrants in Italy, which is the main arrival point in the EU since the closure of the Balkan route and the EU-Turkey deal, as well as possible measures to improve it. MEPs will also discuss how to protect children during migration with the Commission. (Thursday) Double taxation. Firms within the EU will have access to an effective mechanism to resolve disputes over double taxation (income taxed in two different EU countries), under proposals being voted on by the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee. There are currently around 900 double taxation disputes in the EU involving more than 10.5 billion. (Thursday) Legal highs. An informal deal with the Council on new rules to tackle the phenomenon of "legal highs" (legal substances used as alternative to illicit drugs) will be voted by the Civil Liberties Committee. The reform includes tighter risk assessment deadlines and a much faster procedure for including suspected substances in the list of illegal drugs. (Thursday) Development Goals. UN Advocates, assisting the UN Secretary-General in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals, will discuss EU actions in this field with MEPs on the Development and Environment committees. EP President Antonio Tajani and Norway s Prime Minister Erna Solberg will open the discussion, with speakers including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and Unilever CEO Paul Polman. There will also be a bilateral meeting between President Tajani and Prime Minister Solberg in the morning. (Wednesday) Plenary preparations. Political groups will prepare for the 12-15 June plenary session, when MEPs will discuss the upcoming June European summit and the situation in Malta following the Panama Papers publication, and will welcome Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara. They will also discuss and vote on the reforms implemented in 2016 in Serbia, Kosovo and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, on new energy efficiency labelling, and on suggestions for a competitive but fair collaborative economy. In a special ceremony, MEPs will celebrate 30 years of Erasmus. Asylum/Press seminar. A seminar for media on A Fair Share in Europe - Creating a Common Asylum System is organised by the EP press service with leading MEPs in the field, including EP rapporteur for a reformed EU asylum policy Cecilia Wikström and Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos. The seminar will end with an exchange of views with President Antonio Tajani.
