conflict. Three common reasons why people fight with each other are: conflict about beliefs, conflict about land and water, and conflict about power. People can fight about political beliefs or religious beliefs. For example, in the U.S. Civil War in 1861-1865, the American people fought a bloody civil war about state s rights including the right of an individual state to permit slavery. This terrible war destroyed thousands of families. In modern Pakistan, the fighting between Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims has killed more than 10,000 believers in the past fifty years. Fighting about beliefs can lead to civil war, and many young lives can be destroyed. Secondly, people often fight about land and water. For example, since 1948, Israel and Palestine have suffered a long, angry conflict about which nation owns the West Bank region and its water. In the United States during the 1800 s, European settlers pushed westward into Native American lands. The Native Americans and the European Settlers fought many bloody battles over the period of 100 years. These wars created terrible death and injury on both sides. Fighting about land and water can create long, bitter wars between neighbors. Another common cause of fighting is the hunger for power. During World War Two in Europe, the famous German fascist dictator Adolf Hitler wanted to control Europe. By his commands, more than 50 million people were killed. Another example comes from Central Asia. During the 1200 s, the most powerful men in the world were the Mongolian warlord, Genghis Khan, and his son Ogedei Khan. They gained control of all the countries from Poland in the west, to China in the east, including Iran, Iraq, and Russia. To enforce the power of the Mongol Empire, they killed more than 60 million people. Fighting about power can create huge international wars which lead to massive loss of human life. Fighting about beliefs can produce civil war or civil violence. Fighting about land and water often results in long, bitter wars between neighboring groups. Fighting about power can be started by just one power hungry person, but it can lead to great world wars. Human violence is an old problem. However, now that United Nations peace-keeper armies can go into world conflict zones, they might help reduce some of the worst global fighting. reasons for fighting are: conflict about money, conflict about natural resources, and conflict from jealousy. Fighting about money is very common. For example, arguments about money are the major cause of marriage conflict and divorce in the USA. However, fighting about money is not only for husband and wife. It happens also between citizens and their king. In 1776, when the USA was ruled by the King of England, many Americans drank tea from England. American tea drinkers hated to pay the English king s tax on tea. The Americans felt very angry about the king s tax. They threw all the tea into the river! That day was called the Boston Tea Party and it started the American Revolutionary War against England. Fighting about money can cause partners to split apart. Conflict over natural resources such as oil and water happens around the world. The Nile River runs through Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. The amount of water in the Nile is dropping very low. The Egyptian government might invade Ethiopia and Sudan to stop them from using so much water. Another example of fighting about oil is Iraq s 1990 violent invasion of the Kuwait oil fields. As a result of this oil war, thousands of Kuwaiti soldiers died and more than 25,000 Iraqi lives were destroyed. Fighting about natural resources can lead to war between neighbors. Human conflict from jealousy is very common. For example, two jealous children can fight over one toy, or two jealous boys can fight over one girlfriend. The Trojan War in ancient Greece started from jealousy between two kings; they both wanted to marry the beautiful and powerful Helen of Troy. Fighting from jealousy can hurt personal relationships and sometimes it can even lead to war. Fighting about money can cause partnerships to split apart. Fighting about natural resources such as oil and money can result in local wars. Fighting from jealousy usually hurts Page 7 of 9 Two MODEL Cause-and-Effect Essays: B/W + Color Marked

only personal relationships, but sometimes it can create a serious war. Fighting about something that is difficult to share is an old human problem. However, counselors and negotiators can help the angry parties to make new agreements. Hello GW3 students: THIS COPY OF EXAMPLE ESSAY #2 is MARKED WITH COLOR.
