Who we are: The Queens Women s Graduate Association (QWGA) Since 1924 the QWGA has joined with our sister organisations across the world to promote the rights of women globally. QWGA is open to all women, of any university anywhere in the world, who presently live in Northern Ireland including, of course, graduates of Queen s University Belfast. We are part of an island wide and international community of women working for women s rights. We have as our aim that every woman and girl may have the opportunity to reach her full potential. We participate fully in an all-ireland public speaking competition for girls and maintain a scholarship fund for women undergraduates facing challenges in accessing third level education. Through the QWGA, our members gain automatic membership of the Irish Federation of University Women (IRFUW), and access to the IRFUW s newsletters, conferences and workshops, and social and professional networks throughout Ireland. Members also participate in the conferences and other activities of University Women of Europe (UWE) and Graduate Women International (GWI). Both these bodies have important representational rights in respect of women s educational and social positions worldwide, at both the United Nations and the Council of Europe. The QWGA and all affiliated groups in Ireland, Europe and internationally have convenors who keep their members apprised of events in our international networks, helping members build invaluable personal and professional links. Irish Federation of University Women (IRFUW) The mission of the IRFUW is to promote understanding, friendship, and women s community, irrespective of race, nationality, religion and political opinion; to encourage international cooperation; to further women s access to education and opportunity; to represent women in international organisations and to encourage the full application of their knowledge and skills at all levels of public life, whether nationally, regionally or internationally. The IRFUW is made up of QWGA members and members of the Associations of UCD, Trinity and Galway University. The IRFUW holds a national public speaking competition for girls under 15 and holds an annual all island conference. This year the conference is hosted by QWGA. 8
