The Week Ahead 20 26 June 2016 Plenary and committee meetings, Brussels UK referendum. An extraordinary Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) will meet on Friday morning to discuss the outcome of the UK s EU membership referendum, followed by press point at 9:30 (PHS ground floor). Later in the day, EP President Martin Schulz will meet European Council President Donald Tusk, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and the Netherlands Prime-Minister Mark Rutte at the Berlaymont Building, also on the referendum outcome. Plenary Presidents of Israel and Palestine. Reuven Rivlin, the President of the State of Israel, will address Parliament in a formal sitting on Wednesday at 15.00. The next day, Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority, will speak in plenary session at 11.00. Both presidents will meet EP President Schulz and make joint press statements, on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Energy efficiency and renewables. Parliament will assess member states progress towards the EU targets of using 20% less energy, and at least 20% from renewable sources, by 2020. (Debates and votes on Thursday) Property rights of international couples. MEPs will give their verdict on draft new rules for deciding which EU member state s court is to handle death or divorce cases involving international married couples or registered partnerships. Preventing parallel legal proceedings in different countries could save an estimated 1.1 billion a year. There are around 16 million international couples in the EU. (Debate on Wednesday, vote on Thursday) Panama Papers/inquiry committee members. Parliament will vote to appoint 65 MEPs from all political groups to the "Panama Papers" inquiry committee, set up on 8 June to investigate alleged contraventions and maladministration in the application by the EU Commission or member states of EU laws on money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion. (Thursday) Committees Terrorism/foreign fighters. A new draft law that would make preparing to commit terror attacks a crime throughout the EU will be put to a vote in the Civil Liberties Committee. Proposals to make checks on EU citizens entering and leaving the EU mandatory, as they are for non-eu nationals, will be put to a vote in the Civil Liberties Committee. Checks against national databases of lost and stolen documents would be made at all external air, sea and land borders. An estimated 5,000 EU citizens have travelled to conflict zones and joined terrorist groups.
