There are several search engines where you can search for a room in a shared flat (WG): http://www.wg-gesucht.de/ http://www.immobilienscout24.de/ https://www.wg-suche.de http://www.studenten-wg.de/ Nevertheless, at the beginning of October the demand for WG-rooms is great and it is quite hard to find something. Short term-accommodation Immediately upon his or her arrival in Germany your newcomer might need some shortterm accommodation in a hotel or a hostel until he or she arranges a tenancy contract. Here are some possibilities: http://www.jugendherberge-in-magdeburg.de/ https://www.uni-magdeburg.de/campus+_+city/wohnen/g%c3%a4stezimmer.html http://gaestehaus-md.de/ http://www.hotel-sleep-and-go.de/ http://www.ringel-hostel.de/ http://www.roncalli-haus.de/cms/cms/front_content.php https://www.intercityhotel.com/ Tenancy Contract A tenancy contract is the most important thing that newcomers need in order to proceed with the following steps. Please read carefully the tenancy contract before signing. Documents: admission letter, passport, German bank account data (can be handed in later) 2. Civil Office for resident registration (Meldebescheinigung) Documents: passport, biometric photo, tenancy contract (It can be done at Campus Service Center, during the opening hours of the mobile Civil Office) Bürgerbüro Mitte (is closed every first Wednesday of the month) You will need an appointment for visiting Bürgerbüro, please make it here for ANMELDUNG: http://www.magdeburg.de/terminreservierung 3 Adress: Leiterstraße 2a, 39104 Magdeburg (Behördennummer 115) Telefon: +49 391 540 4302 Monday 08:00 15:00Uhr Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday 09:00 18:00Uhr 12:00 15:00Uhr 09:00 18:00Uhr 08:00 12:00Uhr Closed Closed
3. Bank Account Proof of Financial Status (for non-eu): One of the proofs (most frequent) is a blocked back account/sperrvermerk. It is a prerequisite to obtain a valid visa. Non-EU Newcomers are required to have a particular sum of money to cover their cost of living. This money needs to be blocked on your account/ Sperrkonto. This sum is 8,640 Euro (720 per month). Newcomers should be informed that: In Germany while dealing with payments (accommodation, health insurance, semester contribution, etc.) an international student has to have a bank account; For people under 27 (age bank-specific) there is a possibility to open youth bank account/jugendkonto, which usually come with no or less administration costs; Documents: admission letter, resident registration (Meldebescheinigung), passport What students get: EC card (arrives via mail within 10 days or so, card and code separately. The account can however be used directly after signing the contract); Using a service of an ATM machine, which can print your account s current status/kontoauszug; Possibility to withdraw money from ATM is free of charge for certain banks; Transfers within Germany are also free of charge (the costs for outside transfer should be asked for beforehand); Deutsche Bank City Carre Otto-von-Guericke-Straße 12 Telefon: 0391 56990 Stadtsparkasse Alter Markt Telefon: 0391 25060 Commerzbank Breiter Weg 200 Telefon: 0391 59230 Postbank Universitätsplatz Telefon: 0228 55005500 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 09:30 13:00; 14:00 18:00 Wednesday, Friday: 09:30 14:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 09:00 18:00 Wednesday, Friday: 09:00 15:00 Monday: 09:00-16:00; Tuesday, Thursday: 09:00 18:00 Wednesday, Friday: 09:00 13:00 Monday-Friday: 09:00-17:00 Saturday: 09:00 10:00 Please make an appointment beforehand!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4
4. Health Insurance By German law the arriving students need to have a health insurance/ Krankenversicherung. This insurance can be obtained most easily by going to AOK located just north of University at tram station AOK. Health insurance is obligatory to extend the visa and necessary to enroll as a student at a university in Germany. Hint: Do not argue about the amount of monthly payment (about 90 ). Everywhere it's the same amount and you won t find anything cheaper. Private insurances may be financially attractive, but probably such a private insurance is not accepted by the Foreigner s Office or for enrollment, because private insurances don t cover the same services as those covered by state health insurances. Please explain this to newcomers. Documents: admission letter, German bank account data, passport, city registration paper (Meldebescheinigung). After enrollment the newcomer needs to hand in Immatrikulationsbescheinigung to the company. *EU citizens need to register their European Health Insurance Card at AOK e.g. AOK Lüneburger Straße 4, 39104 Telefon: 0800 2265726 Techniker Krankenkasse Stadtfeld Ost, Olvenstedter Str. 66, 39108 Telefon: 0800 2858585 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 08:00-18:00 Wednesday, Friday: 08:00-13:00 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 09:00-16:00 Tuesday: 09:00-18:00, Friday: 09:00-15:00 5. Enrolment & University matters Documents: admission letter passport with a valid visa the originals of your certificates (school leaving examinations, Bachelor's degree, Master's degree and transcript of records) the certificate of exmatriculation from your previous university (only for applicants who have already studied at a German university) a declaration that no examination has ultimately not been passed in the chosen degree program (only for applicants who have already studied at a German university) a certificate of health insurance proof (receipt) of payment of the semester fee a passport photograph. 5
