I remember when I attended a tourism conference run by NYC & Company years ago- I got a big laugh when I referred to Manhattan as the outer borough, and I could see others thought I was exaggerating when I declared that our restaurants were amongst the best in all of NYC. But I was proved correct as our restaurants take on the world and win! On May 18th at Citified we attended Queens, A Taste of the World the largest celebration of culinary diversity, featuring over 40 restaurants and fine eateries from the borough which represented the vast variety of cuisine ranging from traditional Italian dishes to new-age Asian fare. The event was hosted by Seth Bornstein, the Director of Queens Economic Development Corporation, a notfor-profit organization providing vital services to business communities throughout the borough. De Mole Dazies Floresta (More photo coverage by Luke Adams on page 4) Spring Cleaning takes over Sunnyside Story by Peter Ross, Photos by Eduardo Avila On May 15th, members of Boy Scout Troop 390 were once again found swishing brushes and slinging paint as part of the annual It s My Park Day Clean-up festivities going on around the city and here in our very own Sunnyside and Woodside communities. The Scouts joined various other community and civic groups in tackling individual parks in the neighborhood. The boys worked specifically in Sabba Park, located on Queens Boulevard between 48th and 50th Streets, which is named after Joe Sabba, a longtime community activist and (photos continued on page 5) organizer here in Sunnyside/Woodside, coowner and editor of our own Woodside Herald and founder of the Sunnyside Drum Corps. The boys helped paint benches and structures in the park and assisted with general clean-up in preparation for the summer blooms and the exodus of people into the area for the annual Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside Flag Day Parade on June 12th. The boys were lead by Scoutmaster Eduardo Avila who along with the boys donned tshirts and jeans in lieu of their uniforms to tackle the task. PAGE 3 VAN BRAMER UNITES WITH QUEENS RESIDENTS TO SAVE LIBRARIES LIBRARY S LITERACY ZONE WELCOME CENTER OF QUEENS Queens Library s Literacy Zone Welcome Center opened its arms and doors to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer, chair of the Cultural Affairs, Libraries & International Intergroup Relations Committee, and Rev. Mitchell Taylor of the East River Development Alliance on May 20. They had an opportunity to meet with some of the literacy students. The students had made piñatas in their honor. Dear Editor, Devastating budget cuts could spell the end of our beloved Sunnyside branch library It has come to my attention that On Tuesday, May 25 th Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Chair of the Cultural Affairs, Libraries & International Intergroup Relations Committee and Queens Library CEO Thomas W. Galante led a rally on the steps of City Hall in support of urging the restoration of proposed budget cuts to the Queens Library system. New York City s Executive Budget for FY 11 would reduce funding to the Queens Library system by $16.9 million, threatening our library service hours and more than 400 library staff jobs. Council Member Van Bramer was joined by more than 400 Queens Library supporters, trustees, friends of the Library and representatives of DC37 and Local 1321. The boisterous rally illustrated the great determination by Queens Residents to fight and voice their concerns for their libraries. City Council Members who joined Council Member Van Bramer in the rally included Julissa Let Us Remember and Pay Tribute to Our Fallen Soldiers Ferreras, Danny Dromm, Dan Halloran, Peter Koo, Peter Vallone Jr., Mark Weprin, Karen Koslowitz, James Sanders, Leroy Comrie, Vincent Gentile, and Jumaane Williams. Libraries are an essential part of our communities, said Council Member Van Bramer, in addressing the crowd. These educational havens provide vital resources during such pressing times - now more than ever New Yorkers need libraries. Queens Library s Literacy Zone Welcome Center offers adult literacy, classes in English as a Second Language and family literacy programs. At the Welcome Center, Queens Library assists with referrals in other areas of library customers lives: health care, housing problems, social services, tax services. Queens Library is the only public library to be a lead agency on this kind of project. Specially trained, dedicated outreach staff and counse- the Sunnyside library may be in for a knockout punch from the City Council s budget vote in mid-june. A severe cut of $16.9M, effective 7/1/10, is slated for a vote on top of the previous $11.5M cut. They always look to cut funding to the library system on the first roundsit s a New York tradition. Why, I never could figure. Books and children are our future. We must fight back- a large outcry from the community is needed. You can help lors are taking the time and have the training to sit down with patrons and find out what they really need. A big part of the agenda is eliminating the barriers that keep people from enriching their lives, whether that means improving English-language conversation or getting a hearing aid, or simply learning how to navigate the bureaucracy to access help. The Literacy Zone Welcome Center is funded by a grant from with a letter, email or call to the Mayor or representative. Our representative has promised that the Sunnyside library will not close but something drastic will be coming if the latest cut goes thru. The Sunnyside branch library is the hub of this quaint but vibrant community supplying hundreds of books per day, serving 150 children and 75 Seniors on average, not counting the mothers and fathers who bring their children there. I can t imagine. The seniors would be lost without the services of the librarythe DVDs, the informative and entertaining programs. It s just a great place to be. There are 14 computers for use that are booked every day. Think of your favorite program at the library. Was it summer reading, financial market programs, or the great picture book time for the kids? What would happen to the spirit of dents of LIC/Astoria by helping them to improve their educations and job skills. this neighborhood without them? The library just went thru a million dollar plus renovation giving it a welcomed new look. What a financial loss this would be. The loss of personnel would be dreadful, as the highly educated staff would be forced to change careers to survive. They would never consider this career again. These people we depend on for advice would not be part of our lives again. PAGE 5 PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PRESERVATION ACT INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS Would Provide $345.25 Million to NY/NJ /CT Transit & Would Reverse MTA Service Cuts and Layoffs A bill introduced in Congress by New York s two Senators as well as five others would reverse transit service cuts and layoffs ordered by the MTA by making available nearly $350 million in new federal funding, Local 100 President John Samuelsen announced today. It would also help the MTA hold the line on future fare increases. New York s mass transit system has been devastated by a consistent lack of funding by the City, State, and the Federal government, Samuelsen said. The Public Transportation Preservation Act would correct that, and reverse the service cuts and layoffs that are taking such a huge toll on transit systems around the country. I urge every New Yorker (continued from front page) to congratulate our Senators Schumer and Gillibrand on their important stand. Keep America Moving (www.keepamericamoving.org), a national coalition of members of transit unions, environmentalists, and faith-based groups, has lobbied hard to see the Act introduced in Congress, sponsoring a major rally in Washington on April 27 th that brought 3,000 transit workers to Washington, DC. TOWN HALL MEETING ON THE PROPOSED SUNNYSIDE/WOODSIDE REZONING On Wednesday, May 26 th Council Member Van Bramer hosted a town hall, bringing City Planning Officials and Community Board 2 together with Residents to discuss the proposed rezoning plan in Sunnyside and Woodside, Queens. The town hall style meeting provided a much needed opportunity for community members to express their questions and concerns about rezoning. The proposed plan, which has had some residents confused as to what exactly it entails, was broken down in a detailed PowerPoint presentation by City Planning, complete with pictures of the structural differences allowed by current zoning and the proposed rezoning. In a continuing effort to bring city agencies and residents together, Council Member Van Bramer facilitated and encouraged an open line of communication between the community and the agency on the rezoning. Over 100 residents attended the meeting and listened to the proposed plan and many residents spoke, sharing their ideas and concerns. I want the members of our community to have a say in what happens in their neighborhood, which is why I have hosted regular town hall meetings and will continue to do so, said Council Member Van Bramer. Government should be accessible, accountable and responsive these meetings are apart of our continuous efforts to make this possible. Members of Troop 390 get down and dirty freshening up benches in Sabba Park It s My Park Day At Noonan Playground On saturday may 15th, intermediate school 125 joined hundreds of other groups citiwide in the new york city department of parks and recreations s semi-annual it s my park day. Nearly one hundred students, parents, and staff members from the thomas j. Mccann woodside intermediate school joined forces in noonan playground on greenpoint avenue and 43rd street on saturday morning to volunteer their services to clean-up and beautify the park. With supplies provided by the nyc department of parks, and supplemented by the parents and teachers association of is 125, everyone worked together to paint the bences, fence railings, and some of the ground trim, as well as to sweep, rake, and weed in areas throughout the park. In addition, many parents and students collected signatures on petitions urging the mayor and city council to rescind proposed budget cuts to the sunnyside and woodside libraries, as well as to libraries throughout the city. By the conclusion of the event, 150 signatures were collected, and the park never looked better! Special thanks to all of the students, staff members and parents, especially mrs. Purewal, ms. Boutinas, ms. Moccio, ms. Massiello, and mr. Chiu, who gave up their saturday for the improvement of our community!
