December 10, 2012 Recipe For Success It's all in the wrist, says the impish tagline on Thom Johnson's Dos Homos Brand business card. But also, it's all in the telling the story of how this local, "homebased vendor" food business came to be, and quickly to flourish, right here in Ft. Wayne. How did this happen? Try a serendipitous mixture of: (1) liberal exposure to the quality of farmers markets in San Francisco; (2) an "I can do better reaction after visiting one of our local farmers markets; and (3) liberalization of Indiana rules governing HBV's i.e., those selling "cottage food" at roadside stands or farmers markets. Let's see. Does the recipe for HBV success call for any other ingredients? Yes, indeed! A good idea. A love of cooking. Lots of hard work. And finally, embracing excellence. After all, said Thom, mediocrity has no place in cuttingedge Fr. Wayne!

NOT ONE... BUT TWO! This month, we are hosting TWO high school Student Rotarians. Wilisha Graham is a student at South Side & the Anthis Career Center, who wants to pursue a nursing career. Amy Swihart is also a South Side student and she wants to be either a biomedical engineer or a geneticist. Take time to meet these two ladies and make them feel welcome. THE PERFECT GIFT TURNS INTO THE PERFECT SERGEANT S PROGRAM What s funny about donating blood? As it turns out, a lot! All you need are a few wellchosen props and a pair of Rotaractors, like Jeremy Redding and Allie Braun, doing a Sergeant s Program on that subject... and away we go! Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood! That s why our Rotary club is working with the Red Cross to hold a blood drive early next year. The Local Service Committee reports that this Perfect Gift drive is set for January 3, 2013 from 3 pm 7 pm at the Red Cross offices. LSC Chair Jeremy Redding (pictured) reminds us that a single blood donation could save as many as three lives! More information will be shared at our meetings in the weeks ahead. Please be a part of our Rotary Club's effort to help save lives this holiday season. Visit the American Red Cross website to learn more about donating blood. See the flyer that accompanies this week s Spin for more information. A CUP FOR A CAUSE! We have a great opportunity for you! It s a super way to treat someone special (maybe even yourself) to some great blends of coffee and at the same time

support Rotary s humanitarian efforts to help the community and touch the world. We will be selling Green Mountain Coffee at the meetings for the next several weeks. A bag is only $10 and comes in four different blends. What better way to start your morning then sipping a great cup of coffee, knowing you are making a contribution at the same time. The bags make a great gift (personal or corporate). We will also have some gift baskets made up to make your Santa shopping a breeze. If you would like to purchase some coffee and can't make it to the meetings or would like to order a quantity for gifts, please call us! A good cup of coffee can change your day, and now it can help change the world. Happy Sipping! Contact Linda Skaggs 710.2098 and Carole Fuller 438.0564 with questions. YOU HAD TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT Sometimes, your intrepid Spin editor is in the right place at the right time. Oh, if I only had a camera, I said to myself... entirely forgetting that I did have a smart phone. Well, duh! So, no photographic proof of this. You ll just have to take my word for it. As I was crossing the street, almost late to last Monday s Club meeting, here came President Dave walking in the opposite direction and in his full Rotary regalia lugging a rather large TV set back to his car... something that had been used earlier to play a DVD for new member orientation. I offered to help. But as you know, President Dave does his own heavy lifting on behalf of our Club. And it involves a lot more that just an occasional TV set. He doesn t seek recognition, either. But this time, he s gonna get some, anyway! If Past-President Mike Kelly is this Club s Energizer Bunny, then surely Sitting-President Dave Borgen is this Club s Olympic Weight Lifting Champ. So from now on, let s just call him Mr. Muscle.

EVERY ROTARIAN EVERY YEAR Year-end is fast approaching. If you have yet to contribute to the RI Foundation s EVERY ROTARIAN EVERY YEAR program, please write that check now.
