August 2018 Dear Friends, Do you feel Energized and Unified after GHC s GOTV Forum a week ago? Diamond & Silk were electrical! They started our event off with a high degree of energy and humor! (Who says that Republicans don t have a sense of humor?) All of the speakers that followed just kept raising the bar by informing, inspiring and motivating all of us. A huge thank you to our speakers: Senator Paul Bettencourt, Jacquie Baly, Dan Crenshaw, James Rains, Kathleen Osborne, and Former Chairman of the Texas GOP, Steve Munisteri! Another big thank you to our sponsors! Lastly, thank you to all of you who joined the sold-out crowd! GHC hopes that you left energized and unified! What resonated with me about all of our speakers is their shared passion not just a passion to win an election but their passion for our country and the values on which our founding fathers (and mothers) built our government. It is a passion for and belief in the founding principles of our country and what the Republican Party s philosophy is based upon. I ve seen this same passion and enthusiasm for our country, state, and party by many of the Republican women I ve watched in action. But, in recent weeks, I ve been inspired by two Republican women, who battling their or their family s serious medical issues, continue to do daily work to get Republicans elected and support the Republican Party. They do this not because of their desire to be on a winning side they do it because they believe in what our country and our Party stand for. One of these women has been a precinct chair and election judge for decades. Even though she spent the summer recovering from a surgery, this woman continues as an active member of GHC s GOTV Planning Committee by attending meetings, calling possible sponsors, and telling her friends they needed to attend the event. I watched the other woman, while getting her chemo treatment, call people (whether confirmed Republican or not) to tell them they needed to attend the GOTV Forum to hear Diamond & Silk. She then went on to give her nurse information on the upcoming Harris County bond referendum and made her promise to go out and vote. Passion in action! That is what both of these women share. At this point in their lives, they could easily retire from Republican politics and rest on their past accomplishments. But they haven t. Even in the midst of personal difficulties they haven t given up helping Republican candidates get elected and supporting the Republican Party with their money and their volunteer time. Both of these women continue their work because of their passion for our country, state, and founding principles. They continue their work because they believe that Republicans elected to office are the best insurance for protecting our country, our freedoms, and providing prosperity and opportunities for all our citizens. So, this fall, let s remember our passion for our country, our state, and our party and go out and get Republicans elected! As Senator Bettencourt and Former Texas GOP chair, Steve Munisteri told us on August 11th, Fight!...Embrace the challenge! Warm Regards, Cindy Siegel 1

General Meeting 10:00 am, September 18, 2018 Trini Mendenhall Community Center 1414 Wirt Road, Houston Karen Newton TFRW President Our Sept. 18 Greater Houston Council meeting will feature Karen Newton, President of the Texas Federation of Republican Women. Karen will discuss her membership in the organization and the organization s effectiveness in getting Republican s elected. Karen s motto for 2018 is Inspire. Unite. Achieve. While the Texas legislative session doesn t begin for four more months, politicos are already buzzing about who will be the next Speaker of the House. The current speaker, Joe Straus, is not running for re-election and this is the first time there will be an open race for Speaker since 1993. It is a subject that comes up any time a State Representative enters a room and the talk will only get louder as the legislative session approaches. Why the buzz? The Speaker is NOT a statewide elected position, but yields enormous power as the presiding officer of the House of Representatives. The members of the House of Representatives elect one of its own members to serve in the role. The Speaker maintains order during floor debate, rules on procedural motions, appoints membership and designates who chairs committees, and refers bills to committees. The Speaker also appoints conference committees, creates select committees and assigns interim charges while the legislature is not in session. Simply put, the Speaker is considered one of the most influential leadership positions for public policy in Texas behind the Governor and Lt. Governor. There are currently 95 Republicans in the Texas House and depending on a few races this November, it is expected to hold at or around 95. It takes 76 members to elect the Speaker. The Republican Caucus has agreed to meet in December before the session to select one of their own as Speaker. However, the Republican Caucus candidate will be chosen by secret ballot and there is no real enforcement measure for a member who votes on the floor for someone other than the caucus candidate. The possibility remains that (if the numbers remain the same) 21 Republicans can make a deal with the Democrats to elect a moderate Republican as Speaker. The Speakers race has indeed begun in earnest and different factions of members are already strategizing and positioning to elect a member of their choosing into this powerful position. At this time, four candidates have declared to run for Speaker, but it is widely held that other members will enter the race. There is still a lot of uncertainty on who the next Speaker will be, but the one thing for certain is the next Speaker of the House will be a Republican. GENERAL MEETING MINUTES TUESDAY, MAY 1, 2018 President Cindy Siege called the meeting to order at 10:10 am. Chaplain Ann Lee gave the invocation and led the pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags. President Cindy Siegel introduced elected officials and candidates. Pearl Maggio, Recording Secretary, called the roll of delegates. There was not a quorum and the minutes and treasurer s report will be voted on at the next general meeting. Treasurer Pat Lunn gave the treasurer s report. First VP Programs Alice Melancon shared some Barbara Bush s pearls of wisdom with the group. She then introduced our program. The program, Republican Women on the Frontline, a panel discussion of the experiences of Republican Women campaigning for office, was very informative. Panel members were Kristin Bays, Republican Candidate for judge of the 284th District Court in Montgomery County; Melanie Bush, Republican Candidate for Montgomery County Treasurer; Sophia Mafrige, Republican Candidate for Harris County Civil Court of Law Number 4; and Cindy Siegel who served as Mayor of Bellaire and a Bellaire City Councilman for 6 years. Currently, she serves as President of the GHC. Mrs. Bush and Ms. Mafrige will face a Democrat in the November general election. Mrs. Bays does not have an opponent in November. The panel discussed questions such as: What made them get involved in politics? Are there barriers facing women running for office? How did your family respond to you campaigning? Did Republican Women support you? How? A question and answer period followed. Announcements General meeting September 18, 2018 Board meeting June 19, 2018 City Council and ISD Election May 5, 2018 Republican Primary Runoff May 22, 2018 There was no further business and the meeting adjourned at 11:20 am Respectfully submitted, Pearl Maggio Recording Secretary 11
