PAGE 3 NOT FUN IN THE FUN HOUSE: WHEN SPECIAL INTERESTS COLLIDE Op Ed by Chris Wattenbarger As our neighborhood currently experiences the installation of street changes and protected bike lanes, we can see more clearly the end results of the process. Much of what we have seen is predictable. Parking is becoming more difficult and roads have narrowed to seemingly dangerous widths. But we are also finding new and disturbing effects. As some mentioned in comments at Community Board 2, there is an ill affect from the new protected bike lanes and lane widths on the popular Saturday Farmers Market on Skillman Ave at 43 rd Street. Vendor vehicles are generally too wide to fit in the limited parking lanes outlined next to the bike lanes. This leaves vendors the choice of blocking traffic on their left, protruding out into the street, or blocking the bike lane on their right, blocking the bike lanes. Last week, vehicles managed to do both. The vendor tents are now too big for the allotted space. This leads bike lane being further blocked from the sidewalk side, or the sidewalk being blocked when the tents are moved off the bike lanes. Last week, there were areas with a two-foot width of sidewalk left for pedestrians to shop or pass by, tending to encourage pedestrians to walk in the bike lanes, angering the cyclists. One vendor said he felt in danger where he was standing, even if there was enough space for him, being so close to bike riders flying by the curb. Farmers put up signs directed to cyclists; Please Slow Down and Please Walk Your Bike. But when I noticed the lack of effectiveness of these messages, I was not sure whether to chuckle or wince. ((I was reminded of childhood experience of the Fun House, a feature of the Riverview amusement park outside of Chicago. The attraction had obstacle courses, walls that seemed to fall down on top of visitors, and an exit tunnel through a large spinning cylinder. The Fun House was amusing because although frightening, one felt safe, knowing the logistics had been planned, and many had gone before me unharmed. But our Farmers Market scene did not appear to be planned or safe, so I term it a Fun House in jest. The addition of the bike lanes to this area have placed a strain on many aspects to community life, and now are making the Farmer s Market, a bustling weekend event, into an overcrowded danger to all who participate or walk by. The community has welcomed the market with its produce and features like composting. Most parties, whether vendors or shoppers seemed to be trying to adjust last Saturday, and seem to hope for some help in how to proceed. But it seems likely that they will be told instead, In time, you will adjust. As this community copes with the street changes, with space taken from one use and assigned to another use, against the will of most in the community, we will face more challenges as seasons progress. We have yet to deal with our first substantial snowstorm. These and other predictable situations coming are among the reasons our Community Board voted overwhelmingly to reject the implementation of the protected bike lanes and street changes.(i believe I speak for most in our community when I say that in most cases with consequences that so affect so many in so many negative ways, the local population knew best what is appropriate for their community. The DOT timetable seems rushed, with problems such as we see with a permanent public event not considered carefully. As the designers of the problem, we hope that the administration will step in and correct matters before someone is hurt. It might be wise, for example, to consider moving the market perpendicularly down the wider 43 rd Street, as opposed to Skillman. Will such a simple solution will be considered? Probably not. Rather, I believe the powers that have caused this situation will say instead, dealing with the many problems which will occur, take the stance that In time, you will adjust. NEIGHBORHOOD LIBRARIES GET 75K Assembly Member, Brian Barnwell has secured 75k for the neighborhood libraries in his Assembly district. Last week, Assembly Member Barnwell was joined by Queens Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott, Woodside branch staff, and local neighborhood parents and children as Barnwell presented a check for 75k to the Queens Library. I am thrilled to have been able to secure 75k for the libraries that my constituents use. The libraries of the 21st Century not only provide people with great books, but host and provide valuable community-based services. They are vital for all communities and I am glad to have been able to help our local libraries, said Assembly Member Barnwell. The 75k will be split between the Woodside, Maspeth, Middle Village, and Broadway Astoria branches. We are grateful for Assemblyman Barnwell s support of our mission to transform people s lives, and look forward to working with him to make the most of this investment, said Queens Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott. SPEED CAMERAS Senator Michael Gianaris issued the following statement after Mayor Bill de Blasio signed local measures aimed at turning on school zone speed cameras before the first day of school. It shouldn t be this hard to take steps everyone agrees would protect children as they come and go from school, but Senate Republicans insisted on putting politics first. I am glad this creative solution was found to put the cameras back to work.

PAGE 4 TREE BEDS REFURBISHED On August 31st, New York City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined Sunnyside Shines and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to spruce up the streetscape along Queens Boulevard by planting flowers and mulch in the tree beds. Van Bramer has directly allocated funding to support this initiative and related projects aimed at beautifying the Sunnyside and Woodside communities. Through the initiative, new trees and tree guards have been planted in over thirty tree beds along Queens Boulevard and Greenpoint Ave.

SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the Summons and Complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Department of Financial Services at 1-800-269-0990 or visit the Department s website at http://www.dfs.ny.gov FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to save your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Section 1303 NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this Summons and Complaint by serving the copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you may lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. PAGE 7 Letters To The Editor CHASE BANK Dear Editor, I feel the management at both Chase branches in Sunnyside no longer believes that the neighborhood residents are of any value to them. In the past, they provided a service to our community by staffing both branches with notary publics. The service was free for account holders. Since notary fees are regulated by the State, and since I believe Chase cannot legally raise them for non-account holders, they decided there is no profit in it for them. In my words, I feel they re saying To hell with the community. We are only interested in making money. Paul Slapikas Woodside Chase Bank was contacted regarding the above, and this was the response: Dear Sherilyn, Chase Bank does offer notary services, but it s up to individual branch management to determine the number of notaries needed. When notary service is unavailable, Chase employees can help a customer find a non-chase location that offers notary service, or schedule an appointment with a nearby Chase branch. Best, Carolyn Evert Submit Letters to the Editor: SSabba@WoodsideHerald.com
