A. President Roosevelt placed economic sanctions on exports to Japan to protest its expansion into other countries. B. This upset the Japanese Government who depended U.S. natural resources. C. The Japanese attacked the U.S. Naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. D. Japan hoped to destroy the fleet giving them control of the Pacific Ocean. E. The USA declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941.

A. Japan refused to surrender. B. President Truman authorized the use of atomic bombs to force Japan s surrender. C. Enola Gay: B-29 Superfortress that dropped first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. D. Bockscar: B-29 Superfortress that dropped second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. After the dropping of this atomic bomb, Japan surrendered. E. Over 50 million people died in the war.

The Enola Gay: the B-29 that dropped Little Boy (the 1 st atomic bomb)

F. August 6, 1945: Little Boy dropped on Hiroshima causing over 237,000 deaths.

G. August 9, 1945: Fat Man dropped on Nagasaki causing over 80,000 deaths. Named after Winston Churchhill

A dense column of smoke rises more than 60,000 feet into the air over the Japanese port of Nagasaki, the result of an atomic bomb, the second ever used in warfare, dropped on the industrial center August 8, 1945, from a U.S. B-29 Superfortress. (August 9, 1945)

A.September 1945: Japan finally surrenders! B.Only after the US deployed two atomic bombs.

A. Industries & farms destroyed. B. Government in shambles. C. People demoralized. D. Emperor exposed as ordinary man rather than the god Japanese believed him to be.

A. U.S. Commander General Douglas MacArthur responsible for rebuilding Japan. B. Goal: guarantee Japan would not pose a military threat to other countries in the future.

There were three major goals in occupying Japan: A. Setting up a democratic government in Japan. B. Abolishing Japan s military forces. C. Give up entire empire!

A. Made Japan constitutional monarchy. General MacArthur wanted a democratic government, but respected the important place the Emperor had in Japanese culture. B. Wrote a new constitution, creating a bicameral Parliament ~ DIET. C. Abolished state religion & other religions were openly practiced.

D. Emperor remained a symbol. E. Japanese granted universal suffrage. Everyone over age of 20 allowed to vote for members of Diet. F. Bill of Rights added to guarantee basic freedoms. G. One clause: Japan could not declare war! Only allowed to fight if they were attacked first.

A. Japan s economic recovery after the war was miraculous. B. New technologies were brought in by the U.S. & Japan s industries quickly recovered. Car and electronics manufacturing were two major industries. C. By the 1980s, Japan s economy was second in the world only to the U.S. Currently, ranked 3 rd, behind China and the U.S.A.!
