June 2, 2017 We can always depend on our Friday Oceanside Rotary meetings to begin on time just as today s meeting was called to order at 12:30PM by our illustrious President, RENEE WENDEE welcoming everyone in attendance! Inspirational moment: Shared by our very stylish President, RENEE. MY MISSION IN LIFE IS NOT MERELY TO SURVIVE, BUT TO DO SO WITH SOME PASSION, SOME COMPASSION, SOME HUMOR AND A WHOLE LOT OF STYLE! STEPHANIE YOO led all Members and Guests in our Pledge of Allegiance and then DAVE HALL led us in song. His first song choice was so appropriate following our standing Pledge - You re a Grand Old Flag. And then the Oceanside Rotary Choir went right into the song penned by our very own JAY CRAWFORD Oceanside. President Elect, CHUCK WARD who, incidentally shocked us all by having actually printed out and brought in his own update agenda -- caught us up with the following NON Fake News, beginning with his purported Mission in Life Welcome to Rotary.

Welcome to Oceanside and Rotary. PRESIDENT S STUFF: June Birthday s PAM MYERS and CHUCK WARD shared their birthdays with Rotary Happy Dollars A total of $125.00. (The Choir again practiced by singing the Birthday Song! Hope they practice some more )

b. Anniversaries ERNIE MASCITTI Wedding Anniversary 27 Years, TERRI & DAVE HALL - Wedding Anniversary 49 years, TOM BRAULT - Wedding Anniversary 37 years, FRANK COXON Wedding anniversary 57 years, LARRY HATTER Wedding anniversary 49 years, and MELISSA RODRIGUEZ - Rotary Club anniversary 1 year. c. Update on STEVEN, JANET LACY s husband He is having a second knee replacement surgery. STEVEN we all wish you a speedy recovery. HOW HAPPY ARE WE? In anticipation of hearing some exciting news that she knew some members were planning to share with us, President RENEE shared this insight: Once in awhile, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale! 1. BILL DERN is a new grandfather -- He and wife KATHY traveled up to Northern Cal to visit his son SHAUN and daughter-in-law KARA and their brand new baby girl LAUREN MARION DERN who weighed in on May 17 th at 5 pounds, 9 ounces. This DERN family presently lives near Travis AFB and soon will be leaving for England with the new bundle of joy!! BILL gave $25 to the Rotary International Foundation and another $25 for the Oceanside Rotary Club in honor of this new arrival and also for the following announcement, which he handed off to TOM BRAULT to reveal..

2. TOM teased us by saying, Some of you were already aware of this, but it might be news to other folks Today is National Donut Day! To celebrate, he handed out bags of Hostess donuts to each table to share and told us to enjoy these rings of sweet dough. He went on to describe how another ring was shared recently when, as they were enjoying a vacation in the Western Caribbean, MARK DERN (BILL s son asked ROBYN BRAULT (TOM s daughter) to marry him! To celebrate their fine match, TOM donated $100 to the Rotary International Foundation. 3. CHUCK WARD added some extra happy dollars to his already pledged birthday funds and thereby brought his contribution for the day up to a nice, round $100. In this instance, he was celebrating his youngest daughter MARGARET S latest successful video project. Her budget was $700,000 and she came in at $30 thousand less!!!! (She certainly has come a long way from her KOCT internship days!) 4. JAY CRAWFORD attended the Cubs/Padres Game where he reportedly had his Swiss Army Knife removed from his possession. Always looking for the bright side, JAY gave $10 Happy Dollars celebrating Petco Park security and their very stringent rules!!!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS: LOLA SHERMAN got hit up for a $5 fine for not having a Rotary Pin on last Friday at an Economic Development update. On another topic, LOLA suggested that Oceanside Rotary should hold a workday at the Blade Building at Heritage Park due to the cobwebs in the historic Print Shop which we sponsor there. We also heard that DICK YOUNG and his wife MARY JO recently gave $50,000 to Oceanside High School for Scholarships. TODAY S SPEAKER Our Speaker, SUE OTTO from Coast News and Inland News, was introduced by President RENEE and she gave us some very informative information. Coast News first began 30 years ago. It reaches over 100,000 readers. While other papers are consolidating, Coast News is growing!!!! Inland News, a Coast News sister publication, is 3 years old and looking to expand into Fallbrook. Both of these papers are printed once a week. However, the news is constantly changing and we can keep up to date on local community news day by day actually many times a day by visiting the Coast News Facebook page. We were told that each week they print 20,000 copies of the Coastal edition and 10,000 copies of the Inland version. There is NO charge for either publication and they are available in many different convenient locations along the Coast as well as Inland. Coast News also offers E-Newsletters for free. The only charge is for those that would like to have the publication mailed to them via USPS and that yearly fee is approximately $36 (although residents of Rancho Santa Fe area get the paper mailed to them at no charge). Both Coast and Inland News report the happenings along the Coast as well as Inland and are Community oriented. SUE told us that Coast News is proud to include NO FAKE NEWS! Features include 1) traditional advertising 2) Native advertising, which is Community information. 3) Educational aspects.

CVC verifies that 78% of readers read Coast News. JEAN GILLETTE accepts information regarding any community promotion as well as entering information on the Weekly Calendar. It is important to help community papers as they are here to help us. SUE had a prize up for grabs. If you put in your business card, you were in on a drawing for a free ad in an upcoming edition. This drawing was won by MELISSA!!! SUE thanked all for inviting her today and reinforced that Coast News wants to partner/support all of us. SUE was then thanked by RENEE and all attendees. The Opportunity Drawing was up to $142, but there was no big winner and the $10 consolation prize was given back to club!!! Meeting adjourned 1:24PM
