PAGE 1 SERVING SUNNYSIDE-WOODSIDE AND LONG ISLAND CITY VOL. 84, NO. 26 On June 23rd, Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer, firefighters, the President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York Gerard Fitzgerald, members of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, State Senator Michael Gianaris, Council Member Elizabeth Crowley, the Dutch Kills Civic Association, Community Board 1, representatives from Assembly Woman Cathy Nolan and Simotas s office, and community members held a rally calling for the re-opening of FDNY Engine Company 261. In 2003, the Bloomberg Administration argued that the Engine Company was underutilized and ordered that the Company, and five other fire companies, be shut down as part of a budget deal to save the city money. Now over a decade later, the population growth of Long Island City and Dutch Kills makes the re-opening of the firehouse necessary to fully protect the community and ensure rapid response times to put out fires. The building that housed Engine Company 261 is within blocks of two of the largest public housing communities, cultural institutions like Kaufman Astoria Studios and the Museum of the Moving Image, and several schools. We must do all we can to support our City s bravest and keep our growing community safe from WOODSIDE, L.I.C., N.Y. the devastating power of a fire, said Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer. Engine Company 261 gave the people of this neighborhood comfort for over a century, and today we call for it to be reopened so that our City s brave firefighters can once again provide life-saving help to the rapidly growing population in Long Island City and Dutch Kills. Firehouses are vital to our communities. When our neighborhoods grow and develop, fire protection and the amount of first responders in the area should also increase, said Gerard Fitzgerald, President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association. Engine Company 261 should be re-opened today as it provides a much-needed level of safety and protection to a booming population in Long Island City. As the Long Island City community continues to grow and expand, our communities need more fire protection with the growing number of high rise apartments and the continued presence FREE of industry side by side with hi-rise hotels and condos said Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan. Reopening engine company 261 would be a step in the right direction in providing additional services which would increase the safety and security of the growing population in our community. This neighborhood is among the fastest growing in the city and needs more services, said State Senator Michael Gianaris. We shouldn t wait until tragedies occur before providing the necessary resources to prevent them. The Dutch Kills community has come of age and we need the fire protection that goes along with it, said George Stamatiades, President of the Dutch Kills Civic Association. Our community has grown to the point that fire protection is not a luxury, it s a necessity. We stand here as a community united calling for the reopening of Engine Company 261. Engine Company 261 was first organized on June 12, 1894 as Engine 3 of the Long Island City Fire Department. On January 1, 1913, the house was officially reorganized to Engine 261. The Engine Company served the community for nearly a century and was ordered to be shut down, along with five other Engine Companies, by the Bloomberg Administration on May 25th, 2003 as part of a budget deal to save the city money.

PAGE 2 Letters To The Editor The following letters are the opinions of its author and not necessarily those of the Woodside Herald. MUCH APPRECIATION Dear Sherilyn, I take to my keyboard this afternoon to pay tribute to the Woodside Herald. Say what you will, our community of Sunnyside- Woodside would not be the same without The Herald. It is the quintessential small town weekly and make no mistake, this is a small town, no matter that it is surrounded by a city. The Herald serves the vital function of a Town Square. It is the place where all can go to find out what s happening in the community. Because, really, everyone in Sunnyside-Woodside reads The Herald! I arrived in Sunnyside almost ten years ago now, a newly minted minister serving his first church The Sunnyside Reformed Church on Skillman Avenue & 48th Street. One of the things I wanted to do was aggressive outreach to tell folks in the neighborhood about the church - the changes we were making, the events we were sponsoring and the things that were going on with our members and friends. In time I discovered The Herald and that made all the difference! Suddenly we had a partner one who could publish our advertisements and announcements and do so with dignity as well as a sense of humor. Our little church is doing well today. And I believe it has become a kind of spiritual center for Sunnyside respecting and working alongside the other churches that thrive here. The Little Church on the Corner would not be what it has become were it not for our partnership with The Herald. And so - Ms. Sabba we salute you! We keep you and your paper in our prayers every day. Blessings Rev. Neil A. Margetson, Pastor FLAG DAY Dear Woodside Herald, A thank you to the Woodside Herald and congratulations to the well taken photos of the Flag Day Parade by a professional photographer Joseph Orecchio Great pictures! Once again thank you very much for publishing the photos. Sincerely, Doris Guevara THANK YOU CLASS 603 Dear Ms. Sabba I would like to thank the Teachers and Students of Class 603 at PS 361. I am so moved by the love and care these teachers and students have shown me over the past year and would like to share it with the whole community. I believe they should get the recognition they deserve, even though they did it simply from the kindness in their hearts! Congratulations on your Graduation!!! I will miss seeing you every day! We will remain friends forever! Good Luck in Your Future!! Waves and Kisses!! Uncle Charley Prisco GRATITUDE Dear Sherilyn, Thank you for always making room in The Woodside Herald by publishing articles that discuss how The PS 199Q Community Awareness Program spreads cheer in our community through supportive and loving events. Past projects have included a Gift Drive for the Homeless, Giving Love to People with Cancer, and The PS 199Q Anti- Bullying Campaign - Standing up to Bullies. PS 199Q s latest project appearing in The Woodside Herald was about Bringing Smiles and Sunshine to Seniors published along with pictures of nursing home residents and our PS 199Q students, students parents, and staff members. It was so nice to see the smiles on our students faces as we reminisced about the meaning of our event and the joy the day brought us! We are grateful for the teamwork between The Woodside Herald and PS 199, and how our teamwork makes it possible for our community to be informed about the wonderful events happening throughout our neighborhoods! FIRST FRIDAY S The last First Fridays community social mixer event, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside and held at the JV Daniels VFW Post # 2813, was a success raising over $ 200 plus foodstuffs for the benefit of those in need (funds and items were forwarded to the Saint Rafael s Food Pantry) with a crowd of almost 30 attending. Thank you to Spicy Pizza for donating food for the event. The next First Friday will be held on July 7th at The Globe Tavern located at 49-10 Skillman Avenue, Sunnyside, NY from 7 to 10 PM. The event is both a fundraiser for the local food pantries (please bring a few non-perishable food items or a $ 10 donation) and a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors in a night of fun and conversation. The Globe Tavern is graciously offering drink specials throughout the event. The Club and its community partners hope to see you all there. PAGE 4 CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL KIDS RAISE MONEY FOR LESS FORTUNATE The Sunday School kids from Sunnyside Reformed Church held a pancake breakfast on June 4 to raise money to send kids with incarcerated parents to summer camp. They hoped to raise $100 to sponsor one child for a week at summer camp. But instead they raised 800 dollars! (Story from front page) Enough to send 8 kids to camp. These funds will be matched by a grant program, meaning 16 deserving kids will be able to experience the joy of summer camp this year. Thank you to everyone who helped support this great cause through The Prison Fellowship in Merrifield, VA. Photo Credit: Bea Westlund SUMMER IN SUNNYSIDE Sunnyside Shines Presents Two Local Dance Groups Sunnyside Shines continues its presentation of local talent through its Summer Thursday programming in Bliss Plaza. On Thursday, June 22nd, the organization hosted two Latin American dance groups: the Manhatitlan Mexican Folk Dancers, and the Ayazamana Dance Group. The Manhatitlan Dancers, a program of Saint Raphael s Church in neighboring Greenpoint, recently dazzled the local community during a performance at the 17th Annual Flag Day parade. The Ayazamana Dance Group is a program of a local cultural center promoting the cultural heritage of Ecuador. The dance performances will be preceded by learning activities with the Uni Project, who will be onsite with their STEAM-education themed EXPLORE cart as well as their mobile library, the READ cart.
