Resolution #37- Clinton/Founders HIP Motion to consider: Senator Shipman Second: Senator Primous Senator Shipman: Amended to: $641.31 due to the change in stoves from gas to electric, a more reasonable cookware set, and the purchase of a marker board table instead of the white board paint and table purchase. Motion to amend: Senator Shipman Second: Senator Mirs President Lancaster: Point of order. Motion to amend what? Senator Shipman: Motion to amend changing the cookware to a microwave. Vice President Zmudka: Do you want to elaborate on that?
Senator Shipman: There s currently a student lending out her old microwave in the Founders Lounge. I feel as if that would be a liability on the college so I feel Senate could buy one to put in there. Sean and I found the cookware that was bought last year for Founders in the office. The microwave is the same exact cost as the cookware so it could just replace it. Motion to amend: Senator Shipman Second: Senator Mirs Resolution #37 has been amended. Parliamentarian Schulz: Point of order. Motion to consider? Oh, never mind. Vice President Zmudka: If there are no other questions, we will move this onto a Resolution #37 passes. Resolutuion #38- Complex HIP Motion to consider: Recorder-Elect Henderson Second: Vice President-Elect Creed Recorder-Elect Henderson: Amended to $1,155.53 total due to the addition of a TV for the centennial kitchen. In totality, the final projects include a smart blue-ray player for the Centennial Lounge, a Ping-Pong table and equipment for the Centennial lounge, 2 white boards for the Vollmer and Hebron study lounges, and a TV for the basement kitchen and lounge area of Centennial. The addition of the TV was made to make a better use of the $2,000 budget and the current TV is very outdated. Vice President Zmudka: If there are no questions, we will move this onto a Resolution #38 passes. c. Resolution #43- KVMO HIP Motion to consider: Senator Gray Second: Treasurer-Elect Jobes-Ryan Senator Gray: Amended to: $1,260 due to the purchase of two outdoor grills for behind the manors, a picnic table for behind the manors. Both the printer and card reader for Knight s Village lounge were scratched due to cost as well as the flowers which would have taken over 75% of the $2,000 budget. Senator Dolphin: I was out frolfing two days ago. The grill that was broken is actually fixed. EAD Buckles: How was it broken? Senator Dolphin: The pole holding the grill was rusted out, but I guess they reinforced it. President-Elect Vogel: I recommend we still pass the resolution as is. Treasurer Capper: We can see if it is needed. We don t have to buy everything on the resolution if we pass it. We don t have to spend all of the money we are approving. Vice President Zmudka: If there are no more questions, we will move this onto a Resolution #43 passes. d. Resolution #44- GLR HIP
Motion to consider: Senator Odei Second: Senator Burma Senator Odei: Amended to: $899.93 due to the elimination of the treadmill for Lohe workout room and dryer for Grossman Hall. The treadmill will be fixed at no cost to Senate. This price also reflects the decrease in price for the Grossman hall study room whiteboards, as they are now a smaller size. Cookware and bake ware is also included for the use of kitchens between Grossman, Lohe, and the Residence Halls and a washer for the Residence. I talked to Kyle about the treadmill and he found $1000 treadmill that would make it over the budget. President Lancaster: Prefer to amend it? Senator Odei: I can contact Kyle and see about treadmill. Vice President Zmudka: Could we get the one fixed and then buy another one? Senator Odei: He hasn t gotten back to me yet. Vice President Zmudka: The resolution says, The treadmill will be fixed at no cost to Senate. That s true? Senator Odei: I m not sure, he didn t get back to me. Senator Jaeschke: What s going into the Cardinal Commons improvements? Senator Odei: There was an extra table and chairs put in Cardinal Commons from John Wuertz. Senator Burma: The improvements in Cardinal Commons is to make it more of a study space so people could do homework there. President-Elect Vogel: What about the proposed bar stool area? Senator Odei: John Wuertz shot that one down. Vice President Zmudka: Is there a motion to amend the resolution to include the $1000 for the treadmill? Motion to amend: President-Elect Vogel Second: Treasurer Capper Abstained: Senator Matthew Resolution #44 has been amended. Resolutuion #46- New Organization, Sparkles Motion to consider: Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner Second: Senator Shipman Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: I will yield the floor to Andrea Weiss. Andrea Weiss: Hi, I m Andrea Weiss and I m a second year. I m a part of Sparkles which is make up ofunified cheerleaders ages 5 to seniors in high school. We have been cheering since October of last year. We would like to become recognized on campus which would help us become nationally recognized. President-Elect Vogel: How long has Sparkles been around? Andrea Weiss: October of last year. We had interviews last September. Senator Shipman: Can you tell us a little about your cheer squad? Andrea Weiss: We have 20 people. We have six kids with various motor disabilities. They come from different communities. Once a week we have hour-long practices to
play games and learn cheers and routines. We perform at football and basketball games. We re looking to get uniforms. We send letters to local schools to get kids involved. Senator Matthew: If you get grants from the national organization, would you still be coming to Senate for money? Andrea Weiss: I m not sure, but we will apply for supplemental funding for uniforms. Senator Jaeschke: What does it take to become nationally recognized? Andrea Weiss: We have to be recognized on Wartburg s campus and have plans to get uniforms. Vice President-Elect Creed: SRC recommends Sparkles to become an organization. Vice President Zmudka: If there are no more questions, we will move this onto a Resolution #46 passes. f. Resolution #47- New Organization, Anime Club Motion to consider: Vice President-Elect Creed Second: Senator Crepin Vice President-Elect Creed: I will yield the floor to David Garnier. Senator Garnier: The Anime Club will provide interaction with intercultural experience with Wartburg Students to forget about sexism, racism and any harmful things toward personal or religion beliefs. We want to do this through practice of animation. We believe this is a way to implement friendship as the main theme of animations is friendship. This is to promote friendship among Wartburg students in the Wartburg community. Vice President-Elect Creed: SRC has reservations about the constitution of the Anime Club so we motion to table this resolution for one week. Resolution #53- Supplemental Request, Reel Orange Productions Motion to consider: Treasurer Capper Second: Senator Singleton Treasurer Capper: Amended to $100: Plane tickets can be funded through Student Senate, however with the increased claim rate, we felt that $100 dollars was sufficient to support this conference as the student would only be paying $170 dollars out of their pocket. Recorder Thompson: If this is for an individual, do they have to put their organization? Treasurer Capper: No. Recorder Thompson: Why did he put Reel Orange then? Treasurer Capper: Because he just filled it in. Senator Burma: Could he have gotten more money if he applied earlier in the year? Treasurer Capper: It s at the discretion of the committee. President Lancaster: The limit is $200 per student. Prior to that rule, there are factors looked at when awarding money.
President-Elect Vogel: $200 is the limit for conference fees. This specific application is just for a plane ticket. Senator Newell: Emily, you mentioned that you looked at the fees that students have paid? Treasurer Capper: Yes, the student service fees come to Student Senate. We considered that he has paid this fee for the last four years. He contributed to this money so we figured we would award him some of it. Senator Burma: Have we lowered the amount of money given to seniors in the past? Treasurer Capper: We have not yet this year. Last week s supplemental request was for seniors presenting their research. We have not lowered fees. The next requests may be below $200. We re up 6 requests from last year and have given more money to supplemental requests. President Lancaster: To answer your question, we have lowered the amount given to seniors in the past. We do ask the make-up of the groups by year frequently on requests. Dr. Kittle/Dr. Pothast Dean Kittle: One of the things I think is important is showing appreciation on campus. Tomorrow we have a retreat planned for the Student Life staff, but we re going to be doing a lot of creative activities. I have these cards for you all to write on to show the student life staff your appreciation that I will display to them tomorrow. 8. President s Report... Sean Lancaster President Lancaster: The next thing is campus improvement projects. We have two big ideas. Thank you for those who tabled. The first idea comes from campus ministries. We ll have Karleigh Crepin and Ben Pollack present on that. Senator Pollack: Here is the Chapel Commons Remodel Proposal. It was written by Caleb Davidson. Karleigh and I have talked with Pastor Brian, Pastor Ramona and other people involved with Wartburg Faith Expression groups. There are 222 members apart of the 10 Wartburg Faith Expressions groups we have on campus. That s how many people would benefit from renovating this apace. Senator Crepin: There s a section with an empty space, and we are proposing to renovate this by putting down carpet and having couches and bean bags. This is to make the chapel more inviting. It s good to have comfy seating. There s a conference room in the back to be renovated for a private prayer space. Recorder Thompson: Is this a space for diversity like the Lilly Room? Senator Crepin: Yes. The space is to have no purchase, just a free space that you don t have to reserve. This could give them a chance to be comfortable. Senator Milius: Doesn t Ritterchor practice in the Chapel basement?
Senator Crepin: Yes, we ve talked to Dr. Nelson about this and he said he can make it work. We have a budget of $5,250. This is for carpet and installation; paint; projection screen; book shelves; couches, chairs, bean bags, tables and lamps. Senator Matthew: With the fabric and carpet, will that limit space for animals to come in during finals time? Senator Crepin: We ll look into it. Senator Pollack: The same group working on the proposal will go more in depth with details. Senator Buckwalter: Where s the projector? Senator Crepin: We already have a roll out projector that we also use for Euchie. We re just asking for necessities. Senator Jaeschke: Have you consulted with a professional about installation? Senator Crepin: Maintenance said they would put it in for free. EAD Buckles: We can assure that no coffee tables will be taken correct? Senator Crepin: I ll keep an eye on it. Senator Isvik: Did you guys have a plan for utilization of the space? Like for blood drives? Senator Crepin: That s still something we re working on. Senator Burma: Will there still be room for blood drives? Senator Crepin: We ll have to check. Senator Pollack: We did talk to Dr. Nelson about the Ritterchor practices. President-Elect Vogel: I ve heard that the pastors have ultimate say about who has space? Senator Crepin: Yes, it s the pastors ultimate call. They want something that s more comfortable for everyone. Parliamentarian Schulz: What s Senate s role? President Lancaster: They came to us last year as an allocation request. I wanted to see the response from you all. We had another request made of us by maintenance to do handicap accessible bathrooms in WBC. We re either choosing to go this route or the other route. Vice President Zmudka: Could you touch on the budget we usually use? President Lancaster: Last year we spent $16,000 and that s way more than usual. We usually shoot between $5000 and $8000. We don t want to do both of them. Treasurer Capper: We ve done as little as $2000 last year. We can bump up campus ministries budget up. President Lancaster: If we do save this year, we can use extra money next year. Senator Jaeschke: Can we learn a little more about the bathrooms? Vice President Zmudka: Any more questions about the Chapel basement renovations? Senator Isvik: If this wasn t funded by Senate, what would be the likelihood this would be completed? Senator Pollack: Slim to none. Senator Burma: I want everyone to keep in mind that this is an ELCA school. This is what Wartburg stands for and the chapel is a very important part of this campus. Treasurer Capper: The college is trying to make the bathroom code compliant to ADA. The cost to remove one of stalls and make partitions is around $4000. That is all the information we were given. The college is looking to make more ADA compliance.
President Lancaster: The chapel renovation is the flashier choice. We do have a student that s coming in next year in a wheelchair. President Zmudka: The likelihood of the bathroom happening if we didn t help is still high. President Lancaster: Our funding would just speed up the process. Senator Shipman: Why does it have to be either/or if it will total around $9000? Treasurer Capper: With our allocation claim rate, this is what our budget is looking like. This is what I m comfortable with. President Lancaster: I think we should choose one or the other. Senator Matthew: Could we push some sort of money to get the bathroom project started? Treasurer Capper: Maintenance gets approved so much money. I m not sure if it will help speed it up or not. President-Elect Vogel: General senators can write a resolution if they do have an idea about campus improvement projects. Can we still do smaller scale projects like outdoor recycling and trash along with one of the bigger projects? President Lancaster: Maintenance does not want that because they ll have to collect trash and they ve had problems in the past with animals getting in garbage. They re very resistant and hesitant. It s up to them for cleaning. Senator Milius: Is there a reason we only do one project one time a year at the end of the year? President Lancaster: We gather ideas throughout the year and have an idea of our budget. It s good to have that final project. It s better to take all the money we have left and do it. Senator Milius: Can we do multiple projects throughout the year or just have the final one? If we have a lot of students enrolled next year and have more money with student services fee, could we pick up the other project? President Lancaster: We could. I ll write up some resolutions. Academic Ombudsperson s Report..........Tyler Vogel President-Elect Vogel: Janeen Stewart has been in contact with me about commencement. They usually ask for help from student leaders to usher and jobs like that. Commencement is May 22 nd. The applications for appointed positions are up online. They are due on the 17 th by 11:59 p.m. for ombudspersons and diversity position. PR Director application is due the 24 th by 11:59 p.m. If you are applying for multiple positions, you could have one or two letters of recommendation. PR Director has more components to their application. I encourage if you are seeking one of these positions to reach out to those who are currently holding those positions. 12. Sustainability needs help with a project next Wednesday from 7 to 8 a.m. I can t give any information because it is secret. For the Readership program, we will no longer be having the New York Times in circulation. There will also be no circulation to dorms except Cardinal Commons. President Lancaster: This is because USA Today raised rates 60%. Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: We ll look into adding those back in future. 13. Executive Assistant for Diversity s Report. Senator Milius: The Wartburg Store is having a March Madness tournament. It costs $2 to join and all the money is going to Dance Marathon. The non-student athlete winner gets a prize of $100 to the Wartburg Store. Senator Isvik: Kantorei Hand Bells has a concert this Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Chapel.
Senator French: Women s basketball is in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. They play St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota tomorrow at 8 p.m. Track and field will be at Grinnell for nationals. Wrestling will be in Cedar Rapids as they are going for their 9 th championship in 10 years. President Lancaster: The changes in readership will be put through the Juice. 19.
