INVESTING IN AUSTRALIA With global uncertainty, Australia s economic conditions characterized by record-low interest rates, strong population growth, low levels of unemployment and 26 years of sustained growth have provided a popular environment for overseas investment. Below are some key factors to consider when investing in Australia: Rapid growth: According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, foreign investment from China has grown 37.9% over the last 5 years now reaching $87 billion at the end of 2016. Due to its close ties with China, Australia remains the second largest recipient of Chinese Outbound Direct Investment, with the state of New South Wales being the priority state for Chinese investment. Complex immigration laws: The Australian Government s abolition and replacement of the 457 Visa, is part of an ongoing plan to strengthen the integrity and quality of Australia s employer sponsored skilled programmes. With the significant complexity of Australia s immigration laws and the ever expanded powers and reach of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, businesses recruiting overseas skilled workers need to be on constant alert to the rapidly changing regulatory framework, to ensure that they stay ahead of potential breaches of the law. There are over 3,000 pages of legislation and more than 20,000 pages of policy guidelines which provide direction and guidance to Departmental officers as to how they are to interpret and understand Australia s immigration laws. Investment by industry (%): The largest sectors benefitting from this investment are highlighted below, all of which are key areas of focus and expertise for BDO. 36% 28% 9% COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE INFRASTRUCTURE HEALTHCARE 8% ENERGY 8% AGRIBUSINESS 5% MINING HOW CAN WE HELP? As leaders in Australian immigration law, we help businesses overcome the challenges associated with skills shortages and meet their workforce needs. We also offer a broad range of immigration related advice and visa services to individuals seeking temporary/permanent residency in Australia. As Australia has the most complex immigration laws in the world, we navigate these laws to provide timely advice and business solutions. Learn how to reduce the risks for your organisation, download the migration checklist or click here to contact one of our advisers directly.

INVESTING IN CHINA Like much of Asia, China s population is undergoing a major social and economic change. For Australian businesses hoping to expand into China, complexity arises when navigating the unfamiliar. Below are some key factors to consider: Cross-cultural management: With an internal market of 1.3 billion potential customers, China continues to change rapidly. The country is now more than 50% urban, with 10-15 million people moving to cities from the countryside each year. Unfamiliar tax structures: In 2016, China had the world s largest tax cuts due to a pilot program for value-added tax (VAT) to replace business tax across the board. This resulted in companies making total tax savings of 570 billion yuan ($82.63 billion). The program not only helped to reduce companies tax burdens, but also promoted industrial transformation and upgrading. Rapid growth: While GDP in the west has slowed, China continues to maintain an annual growth rate of 6.95%. Contributing to this growth are the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange which came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the 2017 Q1 global rankings in terms of funds raised. There were a total of 134 IPOs with a combined value of 70 billion yuan, the highest first quarter figures since 2014. In addition, 247 companies listed in the first 6 months of 2017, raising a total of 125.4 billion yuan and signaling the strongest first half since 2011. Exports: China has become Australia s biggest trade partner and the demand for Australia s quality products is providing immense opportunities for Australian businesses. Furthermore, the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement is expected to bring even more export opportunities to Australian industries such as aged care and agricultural products. Recently, foreign hospitals can operate in three major cities in China, and aged care facilities can operate anywhere. BDO can assist Australian businesses that are wishing to export or establish foreign branches in all major cities in China. We have the expertise to provide due diligence, tax planning & structuring, audit, valuation, and businesses services. HOW CAN WE HELP? To navigate these factors, BDO Australia s China Desk comprises of Chinese and Australian nationals who have significant experience coordinating strategic, operational, and technical guidance to support businesses and investors with their existing or planned cross-border activities. If you are thinking about expanding your business overseas to China, please do not hesitate to contact us.
