SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Minute book of a special committee appointed to reconsider and hold hearings on a bill, introduced in the House of Representatives by Mr. Thieneman of New Orleans, prohibiting the establishment of slaughter-houses above the City of New Orleans, containing minutes of meetings of the committee and transcriptions of expert testimony and copies of reports, statements and similar papers of health officers, grand juries, medical doctors, New Orleans municipal officials and employees, and others. Pasted on the inside front cover is an unidentified newspaper clipping pertaining to the initial performance of the Convent Dramatic Club given for the benefit of St. Michael s Church, Convent, St. James Parish. Reports of Committees, Mr. Tete on House Bill No. 8, favorably. Mr. Hanlon moved to amend bill. Mr. Lagroue moved to lay bill on the table. Won. Bill reconsidered. Special Committee of two members from each of four districts of the city of New Orleans, two from Jefferson, one from the Parish of St. Bernard. Mr. Scanlan resolved: That the select committee to who was referred the bill of Mr. Thieneman providing for the removal of slaughterhouses, etc. (page 3 of manuscript). Following appointment by the Chair. On the special committee to whom was referred the bill to remove the slaughter houses. Messrs. Hanlon, Jonas, Smith, Eustis, Lagroue, Ferth, Voorhies, Sambola, Thieneman, Bourges, and Walker. An Act No. 118. To protect the health of the city of New Orleans, to locate the stock landings and slaughter houses, and to incorporate The Crescent City Live Stock Landing and Slaughter House Company.
