1 BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY Department of Archives and Manuscripts Carpenter, Charles Colcock Jones Papers, Background: Born in Augusta, Georgia on September 2, 1899, Charles Colcock Jones Carpenter was the son of the Rev. Samuel B. Carpenter and Ruth Berrien Jones Carpenter. He received his education in the Augusta Grammar Schools, Lawrenceville Preparatory School (1917), Princeton University (BA, 1921), and Virginia Theological Seminary (BD, 1926). As an Army officer he attained the rank of 2 nd Lt. (Infantry) in From he served as a Chaplain with the 118 th Field Artillery, attaining the rank of Captain. Carpenter was ordained a deacon on December 20, 1925 and a priest on June 24, From 1926 until 1929 he served as rector of Grace Church in Waycross, Georgia. In 1928 and 1929 he also served as archdeacon of Georgia. From 1929 until 1936 he served as Rector of St. John's Church in Savannah, Georgia. In 1936 he came to Birmingham as Rector of the Church of the Advent. On April 27, 1938 he was elected Bishop of Alabama. Consecrated June 24, 1938, he served as Bishop until his retirement in The following universities awarded him honorary degrees: Virginia Theological Seminary (DD), University of the South (DD), University of Alabama (LI.D), Princeton University (DD). Married in 1928 to Alexandra Morrison, Carpenter was the father of four children: C.C.J. Carpenter, Jr., Douglas Morrison Carpenter, Ruth Berrien Carpenter, and Alexandra Carpenter. When he retired in 1968 Carpenter had served as Bishop of Alabama for thirty years and was the senior bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He died on June 29, Scope and Content: The Charles Colcock Jones Carpenter Papers contain the files compiled by the bishop s office and are divided into four series: parish files, office files, financial files and supplemental files transferred from the diocesan offices at a later time. In addition to correspondence, the files include such things as bulletins, pamphlets, news clippings, photographs, sermons and building plans. The Parish Files are arranged alphabetically by city and within each city alphabetically by parish. They contain much routine correspondence between the bishop and the parish priest and between the bishop and parishioners concerning such matters as
2 the formation of a new mission, property purchases, new building, divorce and remarriage, loss of a priest, and the calling of a new one. The problems resulting from racial inequality emerge early and are a dominant theme throughout these files. Of particular interest for this reason are the files of Selma, St. Paul's; Tuskeegee, St. Andrews; and Talladega, St. Peters, although concerns with civil rights can be found in the files of virtually every parish. Rural Alabama is depicted in the early files of places that were considered missionary outposts at the time such as Dothan, Atmore, Eufaula, and the Tri-Cities. The Office Files are arranged alphabetically by subject and include correspondence with various diocesan officials, information about organizations within the church; various discern facilities and other miscellaneous matters. Where subject matter dictates the sub-series are arranged alphabetically by subject of correspondence rather than chronologically. There is a large sub-series -Civil Rights Incidents- that contain a wealth of historically significant correspondence and supplemental material concerning the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Similar information is found in the files titled Freedom Riders, Eleven Leading Ministers, Interracial Committee, 16 th Avenue Baptist Memorial Fund, and the Selma Incident of Rural Alabama of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s is depicted in the files of various Church Army workers and Deaconesses, The House of Happiness, and Skyline Farms. The building of Camp McDowell, the student centers at various colleges and universities in the state, and Carpenter House (discern headquarters) are sub-series that indicates the growth of the diocese. The financial files contain material relating to various bequests and trust funds set up for the diocese. In many cases the chronological arrangement of the sub-series is preceded by a description of the fund or bequest. Also included in these files is correspondence with various individuals who benefited from these funds. The supplemental files contain material on a variety of subjects, including subjects covered in the first three series.
