1 Community Connection Karen Treml, District Administrator J U N E On June 12 and 13 th the Kewaunee School District hosted a Future Planning Summit to discuss the future of education in the district. KSD was thrilled to have nearly 50 participants join us for this important event. The information and ideas gathered from the event will be used to refresh the district vision, mission and value statements and will assist us in developing a multi-year district future (strategic) plan aligned to priorities that will be designed to promote and enhance the success of all students attending the Kewaunee School District. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the students, parents, community members and representatives from our local government for attending this event. The conversations, engagement and input were extraordinary and will certainly assist KSD in planning so our students are ready to take their future by STORM! Thank you to all for the continued support have a wonderful summer! 3 3000 Shot Club Start Shooting Keep track of how many shots you shoot this summer. If you shoot 3000 or more this summer, you will be awarded a t-shirt at halftime of a high school basketball game next season. Write down the shots you do each day and present you totals to your youth basketball coach. We will need to know your name, grade, contact information and t-shirt size. Each year, the 4 th graders learn about Wisconsin agriculture in Social Studies and then experience planting their very own potato to grow over the summer. 5 ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAM This program aims to provide some of the required school supplies for children of families in need that live in Kewaunee County. (Families with children that are receiving free lunches, are on WIC or Food Share etc., or are in an emergency situation of need all qualify.) BACK TO SCHOOL STORE WILL BE HELD ON AUGUST 15, 2018 FROM 12:30-5:00 PM AT LAKEHAVEN HALL 96 ELLIS STREET, KEWAUNEE If you feel that your family qualifies and your children are in 4K thru High School, please fill out the Registration Form and mail it by Monday, August 6, No phone registrations allowed. Times will be assigned to those who are registered. Registered participants will be notified of their time via post card about 1 week before the event. Those not registered may arrive between 4:30 and 5:00 on Aug 15 th. 7 On Friday, May 11 th, 2018 the Kewaunee FFA Alumni presented its Senior Scholarships to Senior Kewaunee FFA Members at the FFA s Awards Banquet. This year the Kewaunee FFA Alumni awarded nine deserving and dedicated FFA Seniors with scholarships totaling $3, This year s 2018 Kewaunee FFA Alumni Scholarship recipients were: Jordan Dellemann, Cameron Hanrahan, Calista LaCrosse, Mathew Mastalir, Riley Paplham, Morgan Schleis, Olivia Smidel, Jesse Steinhorst, and Kyle Steinhorst. In addition, the Kewaunee FFA Alumni awarded an additional $ to Jesse Steinhorst to help support is expenses to compete in the Future Business Leaders of America s (FBLA) National Competition in Agribusiness this Summer, June 27 th July 1 st in Baltimore, Maryland. Good Luck, Jesse! The senior scholarships are just one of the many ways that the FFA Alumni supports the High School FFA and Agricultural programs, and events. This past year the Alumni also purchased PRO Landscape software at a cost of $3, for the Agricultural/ Landscape classes. The FFA Alumni also assist students with purchasing the FFA Jackets, sending students to leadership conferences, workshops and conventions throughout the school year and summer, in addition to donating to other community groups and organizations. The FFA Alumni has two main fundraisers each year to help support the High School Chapter and its activities. Each spring the Alumni has their annual Nut, Bolt and Tool Sale and in Summer the FFA Alumni holds its annual Tractor and Truck Pull at the Kewaunee Heritage Farm. This year will be the Sixteenth Annual Tractor and Truck Pull, it will be on Friday, June 22 nd, 2018 at the Kewaunee Heritage Farm. The Pull starts out at 6:00pm with the Lakeshore Garden Tractor Pullers Assoc., and then is followed by the N.E.W. Tractors, Trucks, and Semi Trucks. The Kewaunee FFA Alumni welcomes new members and volunteers to help put on this community event. 9 SCHOOL BUS INFORMATION Bus routes and pick up times will be the same as last year unless you are notified differently by the bus company (Families with major changes will be notified approximately one week prior to the start of school) If you rode the bus last year, please contact the bus company if: 1. 14 Reading with Little Buddies The third grade students last writing unit involved them writing an adaptation for a fairy tale. After the students finished writing and word processing their fairy tale adaptations, they shared them with their Little Buddies in Mrs. Cisler s Kindergarten class. A fun time was had by all. The Kindergarten students thought the third graders did a good job and were good at coloring too.

21 REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING KEWAUNEE SCHOOL DISTRICT COMMUNITY ROOM March 19, :00 P.M Closed Session 7:00 P.M. Regular Session PRESENT: BOARD MEMBERS Mr. Dan Kassner Mr. Brian Vogeltanz Mr. Paul Jirtle Mr. Tom Stangel Mr. Dennis Shimanek ADMINISTRATION Karen Treml, Supt. /Sp. Ed. Dir. Mark Dax, Prin. Kacy Rohr, Prin. /Curr. Dir. Tracy Ledvina, Prin Kim Dax, Bus. & Human Serv. Jason Karnopp, Bldgs/Grounds Dir. President Brian Vogeltanz called the Regular School Board meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Meeting notices were posted according to WI State Statutes 19.84(1) (b). A Quorum was verified as five Board members were in attendance. Dennis Shimanek motioned, Paul Jirtle seconded, to adjourn to Closed Session per WI State Statutes 19.85(1)(c) to discuss personnel issues and WI State Statute 19.85(1)(c) to discuss crime detection. The motion carried 5-0 on a roll call vote. At 7:00 p.m, the meeting returned to open session and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Dennis Shimanek motioned, Dan Kassner seconded to approve the agenda as organized. The motion passed unanimously. There were no comments for Public Forum, or concerns for the Board. The meeting began with an update on the Speed and Strength program from Activities Director Brian Rabas. Mr. Rabas reported an increase in the number of participants over the course of the last year, but noted that numbers are up due to Middle School student participation. Mr. Rabas spoke to the Board on the successes of the program, but also acknowledged that the number of High School participants has decreased, and that there are numerous coaches that are not utilizing the program. He explained that the ultimate goal of the Speed and Strength program is to run on its own under the instruction of the coaching staff. It was noted that more works needs to be done to encourage all coaches to take advantage of the benefits of Speed and Strength training for our athletes. Next Mr. Dax recommended to the Board the creation of an Animae Club at the High School. He explained that Ms. Amy Henning has volunteered to head up the club at no cost to the District. Currently there are students interested in learning about the Japanese Culture via the Aniame Club. Tom Stangel motioned to approve the creation of the Animae Club, Paul Jirtle seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Paul Jirtle then motioned to approve the second reading and adoption of Neola policies as presented. Dan Kassner seconded the motion. Motion passed. Immediately following, Dan Kassner motioned to approve the presented resolution in support of the Wisconsin Voucher Taxpayer Transparency Bill; the motion was seconded by Tom Stangel and passed unanimously. Next the current School Board Vacancy was discussed. An ad will be placed in the paper as well as utilizing social media to seek applicants to fill this position. Superintendent Karen Treml then spoke to the Board recommending utilizing Phoenix Behavioral to assist students with mental health services. She explained the services that would be provided, emphasizing that this is a DPI regulated and approved program, and that there would be no cost to the District. Tom Stangel motioned to approve utilizing Phoenix Behavioral, Dennis Shimanek seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Superintendent Treml then proposed a one year extension for Dworak Bus Service, when they seek to purchase new busses, the extension of the contract would assist them. Paul Jirtle motioned to approve the extension of the contract, Dennis Shimanek seconded the motion which passed unanimously. The last major topic on the agenda was the assignment of Fund 10 balances. Business and Human Services Director Kim Dax provided a handout to Board members explaining in detail how being financially conservative has benefited the District in previous years. She then explained projections for the next 5-10 years and the importance of Fund 46. Dan Kassner motioned to approve the assignment of Fund 10 balances as presented, Tom Stangel seconded the motion which passed 5-0 on a roll call vote. Next President Vogeltanz read the Consent Agenda Items as follows: 1. Minutes of February 26, Payment of the bills in the amount of $419, Tom Stangel motioned to approve the Consent Agenda items, seconded by Tom Stangel. The motion carried 5-0 on a roll call vote. Superintendent Treml presented her report to the Board next. Mrs. Treml provided a general update which included multiple activities occurring in the District. She then provided an update on the progress of the Future Planning Strategy. The next topic Mrs. Treml addressed was school safety. She provided handouts in regards to school safety proposed by Governor Walker, State Superintendent Tony Evers and the Chief of Police Association. She explained the progress of the reunification process in the Kewaunee School District, and shared future meeting dates for the reunification team. The last topic addressed by Mrs. Treml was the change in the terminology for the Youth Options program as it will now be called Start College Now when utilized at Technical Colleges and Early College Credit Program when utilized in the UW system. Business and Human Services Director Kim Dax provided a general update for the Board, sharing that the referendum is near completion. She also recapped the accounting conference she recently attended. Buildings and Grounds Director Jason Karnopp then provided a general update to the Board. He reported on the numerous events currently occurring was well as upcoming spring sports and the preparations that are needed. He is actively working on the budget for the school year, and anticipates having it to the Board in the near future. Mr. Karnopp also spoke on school safety sharing with the Board the importance of monitoring access to the facility to ensure the safety of our staff and students. Last on the agenda was the Principals report. Mr. Dax, Mrs. Rohr, and Mrs. Ledvina each provided a general update on their respective schools, sharing with the Board the many celebrations and activities occurring at KSD. President Vogeltanz read important upcoming dates to the Board. At 7:55 Dan Kassner motioned to adjourn, Dennis Tom Stangel seconded. Motion passed unanimously. 22 President Brian Vogeltanz called the Regular School Board meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Meeting notices were posted according to WI State Statutes 19.84(1) (b). A Quorum was verified as six Board members were in attendance. Superintendent Karen Treml administered the Oath of Office to Tom Stangel and Dennis Shimanek, who were recently re-elected as school board members. Superintendent Treml then asked for nominations for School Board President. Robin Kinn motioned to nominate Brian Vogeltanz, and Tom Stangel seconded the motion. Mrs. Treml asked three times for other nominations and none were made. Mr. Vogeltanz was unanimously elected School Board President and continued the meeting as President. Board President Brian Vogeltanz asked for nominations for School Board Vice President. Dan Kassner made a motion to nominate Tom Stangel, Robin Kinn seconded the motion. No other nominations were made after asking three times. The motion passed unanimously and Mr. Stangel was elected School Board Vice President. Board President Vogeltanz asked for nominations for School Board Treasurer. Dennis Shimanek made a motion to nominate Dan Kassner, Robin Kinn seconded the motion. No other nominations were made after asking three times. The motion passed unanimously and Mr. Kassner was elected Board Treasurer. Board President Vogeltanz asked for nominations for School Board Clerk. Tom Stangel made a motion to nominate Robin Kinn, and Dan Kassner seconded the motion. No other nominations were made after asking three times. The motion passed unanimously and Robin Kinn was elected Board Clerk. President Vogeltanz reviewed the current assignments for board committees. At this time no changes will be made to the committees or members. Robin Kinn motioned, Dennis Shimanek seconded, to adjourn to Closed Session per WI State Statutes 19.85(1)(c) to discuss personnel issues and WI State Statute 19.85(1)(e) to discuss contractual issues. The motion carried 6-0 on a roll call vote. At 7:00 p.m, the meeting returned to open session and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The first major topic on the agenda was the 2019 Washington DC trip. Jenn Brann was in attendance to speak to the Board regarding the trip on behalf of Amy Henning. Ms. Brann provided the details of the trip to the Board, and was available to answer questions. Tom Stangel motioned to approve the trip to Washington DC as presented, Paul Jirtle seconded that motion. Motion passed unanimously. The next topic on the agenda was the Early College Credit/Start College Now applications (Previously called Youth Options) KHS Principal Mark Dax provided a summary on the applications received. It was noted that there were many applicants interested in CNA courses. Dan Kassner motioned to approve the applications as presented, Robin Kinn seconded that motion. Motion passed 6-0 on a roll call vote. Superintendent Karen Treml spoke to the Board next regarding Administrative Guidelines for the District. Mrs. Treml explained to the Board that the current guidelines the district is utilizing need to be updated. She explained that Neola does offer templates for Administration Guidelines which would follow in line with the new policies that were recently adopted. Dennis Shimanek motioned to move forward with utilizing Neola s services for Administrative Guidelines as presented, Robin Kinn seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Next Dan Kassner motioned to nominate Robin Kinn as the WASB Convention Delegate and Dennis Shimanek as the Alternate. Tom Stangel seconded the motion and it carried unanimously. Robin Kinn then nominated Tom Stangel as the CESA 7 Representative, Paul Jirtle seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Buildings and Grounds Director Jason Karnopp addressed the Board next with a request for approval in regards to the revised Maintenance and Custodial job descriptions as previously discussed. Robin Kinn made a motion to approve the request, Tom Stangel seconded the motion which passed unanimously. The next topic on the agenda was the School Counseling Department at the Kewaunee School District. KHS Principal Mark Dax spoke to the Board explaining the needs of the District, and the importance of being proactive with the mental health needs of our students. Superintendent Treml then reiterated the anticipated needs of students, as well as the criteria necessary for a candidate to fill the school counseling role once again emphasizing how the school counselor role has changed dramatically in the last couple of years. A motion was made by Robin Kinn to eliminate the part time.5 FTE counselor contract as structured, and to create a full time counselor position with a restructured focus as per the revised KSD School Counselor job description. The motion was seconded by Tom Stangel and passed 6-0 on a roll call vote. The last topic on the agenda was a request by Superintendent Treml to allow teachers to carry over 1 day of personal leave into the school year as a one time exception due to the number of FMLA leaves during the school year. Dennis Shimanek motioned to approve the request, Dan Kassner seconded that motion which passed unanimously on a roll call vote. Next President Vogeltanz read the Consent Agenda Items as follows: 1. Minutes of March 19 th, 2018 and April 9 th Payment of the bills in the amount of $3,046, New Hire of Casey Kudick as Elementary School Counselor Dan Kassner motioned to approve the Consent Agenda items, seconded by Paul Jirtle. The motion carried 6-0 on a roll call vote. Superintendent Treml presented her report to the Board next. Mrs. Treml provided a general update which included multiple activities occurring in the District. She then provided an update on the progress of the Future Planning Strategy. The next topic Mrs. Treml addressed was school safety, sharing that there will be a table top meeting held at KSD with representatives from local Law Enforcement, Fire and Emergency Rescue entities on May 1 st, The last area Mrs. Treml spoke on was current staffing at Kewaunee School District. Buildings and Grounds Director Jason Karnopp then provided a general update to the Board. He reported on the numerous events and projects currently occurring was well as upcoming spring sports and the preparations that are needed. Last on the agenda was the Principals report. Mr. Dax, Mrs. Rohr, and Mrs. Ledvina each provided a general update on their respective schools, sharing with the Board the many celebrations and activities occurring at KSD. Dan Kassner read one correspondence to the Board. President Vogeltanz read important upcoming dates to the Board. At 8:07 Dan Kassner motioned to adjourn, Tom Stangel seconded.
