1 Volume E1 January ~ February 2012 Upcoming Events Giant Schnauzer Club of America Newsletter Feb , 2012 April 5, 2012 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Orlando Convention Center New York City, NY Western Regional Specialty University of Phoenix Stadium Glendale, Arizona July 5-8, GSCA National Specialty Texas Kennel Club Cluster Dallas, Texas July 5, GSCA General Meeting (tentative) Texas KC Cluster Dallas, TX May 8-12, GSCA National Specialty Purina Farms St. Louis, MO Happy 50 th Anniversary Giant Schnauzer Club of America Message From the President Much to be Thankful for As the calendar year draws to a close, this always seems like a good time to look back over the previous twelve months and evaluate those things that have been done (or not done) and look forward to doing a better job in the new year. There are a few things on my list that I would redo differently, but many more that I wouldn t change if I could. Still on my To Do for this next year are: 1. Establishing a permanent specialty committee. Whether or not the GSCA continues to have independent specialties will be determined by whether or not this committee is established and is successful. It is that important. 2. Rebuild the GSCA website. There is so much we can do with this technology and we are only scratching the surface. Archives, photo- sharing, pedigrees and an accessible section containing every board action for members to readily retrieve are only a few of the planned enhancements. If you have any thoughts on additions and improvements to the website, get in touch with Mike Rutkas or any board member. This is going to be a big project in 2012.

2 Message From the President 3. Find a Regional Director for the Western Region. I am sure that as we continue the progress made last year, I think volunteers will see that volunteering in any capacity, not only benefits the breed and the club, but also, benefits the volunteer. 4. Finish the constitutional review. As much as I m enjoying the time this committee is putting into writing and rewriting, proposing and discussing the document that will dictate the governance of this club for many years to come, I am getting anxious to move to the next phase where the membership reviews and suggests changes on the document before voting for it. Pretty exciting and a lot of work by this committee. A few things I wouldn t change from 2011 include the work on the National Specialty in St. Louis. While there are some things that could have been done differently, in general, the 2011 National Specialty was great and the people working on it all did a great job. I, also, couldn t be more pleased with the Board of Directors and the Committee Chairs and the other volunteers who give of their personal time and finances because they know that it is the right thing to do. Any of the many club members who have volunteered over the years understand what I am saying when they recall the time they dedicated to the many aspects of this club that need to be done by someone. I remember the first time we received the congratulatory note and pin when we finished our first Giant. We were thrilled that someone else even noticed. Every year volunteers with the GSCA donate hundreds of hours and hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars to make sure that the club functions and things happen. Things like: every new Champion is recognized, points are tabulated correctly, performance trials and conformation events actually happen, achievements are recognized and the appropriate award is delivered to the recipient. The amazing thing is, these few examples are exactly that; a very small representation of the many, many excellent jobs done by many, many club members every day. It is amazing how much time and effort club volunteers and exhibitors expend doing these jobs that make up the sport of purebred dogs. The Giant Schnauzer Club of America can do a better job of recognizing and thanking its volunteers and exhibitors. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we miss the mark and sometimes we drop the ball. I think that if we keep working at it together, we can get it right more times than we drop the ball. May 2012 bring you fulfillment, success and Giant good times.
