2 I. Admission Policy Any Owen County High School sophomore or junior who meets the following requirements is eligible to become a member of the Owen County Chapter of the National Honor Society: A. Established and maintain a cumulative minimum grade point average of at least a 3.50, following the first semester of that academic year. B. Selection by a faculty council, which must approve, by a simple majority vote, the candidate s admission based on character, leadership, and service. C. Upon being accepted and inducted, the candidate become an active member of the NHS immediately. D. If a candidate is denied admission by the council, he or she is granted one (1) appeal. If he or she is again denied membership, the decision will be considered final. E. All records of the council are closed.

3 II. Dismissal Policy Failure by any member to uphold the standards under which that member is inducted will result in that member s removal from the Owen County Chapter of the National Honor Society. A. Grade point Average: Failure to maintain a 3.50 GPA will result in a one (1) semester probationary period. A student will be notified in writing of the probationary action; the GPA, as recorded on the nine-week grade report, will serve as the second notice of progress. If, at the end of the one semester probationary period, the student's GPA remains below 3.50, that student will be dismissed from the National Honor Society. B. Attendance (meetings): Failure to meet the attendance requirements of five (5) meetings per academic year will result in dismissal from the National Honor Society. The chapter secretary will record member attendance and report to the chapter president and sponsor any member whose attendance is below three (3) meetings after the completion of the first semester. That member will be notified by the president. There will be no probationary period. C. Failure to attend mandatory National Honor Society functions (refer to attendance) will result in dismissal. An excused absence may be obtained from the sponsor prior to the function, but will not be granted the function except in extreme circumstances. D. Character: Disciplinary actions will result in a review by the faculty council of the member s qualifications for National Honor Society membership. Members are granted one written appeal to the faculty council. If the original decision of the council is upheld, the decision will be considered final. All records of the council are closed.

4 III. Officers A. Election of Officers: The officers, with the exception of the president, will be elected during the first meeting prior to the induction of new members, by a simple majority vote. Officers, with the exception of the vice-president and president, may be either in their junior or senior year. Officers will serve a one (1) year term. B. Duties of Officers: 1. President: The vice-president of the previous academic year will assume the duties of the president upon his/her graduation. The duties of the president are as follows: Conduct all NHS meetings, Consult regularly with the NHS sponsor. 2. Vice-president: The vice-president will serve as president-elect and must be elected from the junior class. The duties of the vice-president are as follows: In the event of the president s absence, the vice president will act in the role of the president, Consult regularly with the president, Provide a written copy of all NHS activities to the local newspaper and to the chapter president and sponsor. 3. Secretary: The secretary will be responsible for the written records of the NHS. The duties of the secretary are as follows:

5 Consult regularly with the NHS sponsor, Keep accurate minutes of each NHS meeting, Keep an accurate attendance record of each NHS meeting/event, Report to the president and sponsor concerning member attendance 4. Treasurer: The treasurer will be responsible for the financial records of the NHS. The duties of the treasurer are as follows: Consult regularly with the NHS sponsor, Collect and keep accurate records of members dues, Keep accurate records of all financial transactions of NHS. 5. Historian: The historian will be responsible for maintaining a written and pictorial history of NHS activities and membership. The duties of the historian are as follows: Consult regularly with the NHS sponsor, Prepare a scrapbook which represents all NHS activities IV. Meetings NHS will meet regularly on the day assigned in the Owen County High School club schedule.

6 V. Attendance of National Honor Society meetings and functions is of vital importance to the success of the organization the organization. Each member must attend a minimum of five (5) monthly meetings per academic year Each member must participate in the following National Honor Society Function: a. Induction ceremony b. Two (2) trash pick-ups per year c. Relay-for-Life d. Fundraiser ***Members may be excused by permission of the sponsor prior to the function VI. Dues NHS dues are $10.00 each academic year of membership and are due by the first October meeting VII. Service Requirements A. Monthly meetings (at least 5) B. Induction Ceremony (mandatory) C. Trash Pickup (2) D. Relay for Life (or another approved charity) three (3) hours required
