Pratta- SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT 2018 THE ABSOLUTE FINAL MOMENT TO SUBMIT THE ASSIGNMENT: 7:59 am Sept 10, turnitin.com QUIZ DATES- Sept.10 th or 11 th (depending on a/b day) POINT VALUE- 50 PRODUCT POINTS (assignment), 25 PRODUCT POINTS (quiz) Students are to read Tony William s book America s Beginnings, The Dramatic Events that Shaped a Nation s Character (published in 2010 by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc) and complete the following tasks. The book can be purchased through Amazon.com or a variety of book store websites. The book can also be purchased electronically- students will not be expected to bring the book to class, only the assignment. I have used this book for the past few years, you may find former students who are willing to loan you the book or sell it to you at a discounted price. I. 50 for 50- CLASSIFICATION ASSIGNMENT (90% of the assignment) Students must read the 50 events that Tony Williams identifies as dramatically shaping our nation s character during early United States history. Students will classify each event using the MAGPIE acronym discussed later in this document. Students must summarize the significance of each event in a 50 word summary. Each summary must be exactly 50 words and will be evaluated on whether or not the summary does address the impact of the event on the development of our nation s character. Students should only categorize each event only once, some assignments may fit in a few different categories but students should choose the best fit due to their comprehension of the event. Students can set up the categories however they would like- some students prefer charts, others may want to keep each category on separate pages. Some students do the summaries then provide a 1 page chart with the events listed under the appropriate categories. Events should be listed in chronological order within the categories. Not every category is going to have the same number of events- one of the purposes of this assignment is to evaluate what type of events have had the greatest impact within our history so

2 do not become concerned if you are noticing that some categories have an overwhelming number of events. Every category should contain events. II. SAQ (10% of the assignment) In APUSH SAQs are Short Answer Questions. Each part of the question (A, B, C) should be answered using a few sentences, avoiding quotes and referencing historical evidence to support your answer. This is not an essay! Students are expected to answer SAQs in less than 13 minutes. This is an expectation that AP students struggle with at the beginning of the year and we will regularly address in class throughout the year. That being stated- I would like students to write this SAQ within that approximate time frame. SAQ The citizens of the United States are responsible for the greatest trust ever confided to a political society. If justice, good faith, honor, gratitude and all the other qualities which ennoble the character of a nation and fulfill the ends of government be the fruits of our establishments, the cause of liberty will acquire a dignity and lustre, which it has never yet enjoyed, and an example will be set, which cannot but have the most favourable influence on the rights of Mankind. If on the other side, our governments should be unfortunately blotted with the reverse of these cardinal virtues, the great cause which we have engaged to vindicate, will be dishonored and betrayed; the last and fairest experiment in favor of the rights of human nature will be turned against them; and their patrons and friends exposed to be insulted and silenced by the votaries of tyranny and usurpation. I have provided guiding questions to assist you in classifying the topics. You may do this in a chart separate from your summaries or you can place you summaries under the historical theme. YOU CAN NOT SIMPLY LABEL THE EVENT WITH THE HISTORICAL THEME, YOU MUST CATEGORIZE THE TOPICS FROM THE BOOK. APUSH COURSE/UNIT THEMES: MAGPIES Migration and Settlement What caused migration to colonial North America and, later the United States, and how has immigration affected U.S. society? What were the causes of internal migration and patterns of settlement in what would become the United States, and how has migration affected American life? What were the reasons for and results of U.S. diplomatic, economic, and military initiatives in North America and overseas? Geography and Environment: How have geographic and environmental factors shaped the development of various communities? Politics and Power How and why have political ideas, beliefs, institutions, party systems, and alignments developed and changed? How have popular movements, reform efforts, and activist groups sought to change American society and institutions? How have different beliefs about the federal government's role in U.S. social and economic life affected political debates and policies? Identity: American and National (NAT) How have ideas about democracy, freedom, and individualism found expression in the development of cultural values, political institutions, and American identity? How have interpretations of the Constitution and debates over rights, liberties, and definitions of citizenship affected American values, politics, and society? How have ideas about national identity changed in response to U.S. involvement in international conflicts and the growth of the United States? How have relationships among different regional, social, ethnic, and racial groups developed, and how have these groups' experiences related to national identity? Economy (Work, Exchange, and Technology) How have different labor systems developed in North America and the United States, and how have these systems affected workers' lives and U.S. Society? How have patterns of exchange, markets, and private enterprise developed, and in what ways have governments responded to economic issues? How has technological innovation affected economic development and society? Society and Culture (CUL): How have religious groups and ideas affected American society and political life? How have artistic, philosophical, and scientific ideas developed and shaped society and institutions? How have ideas about women's rights and gender roles affected society and politics? How have different group identities, including racial, ethnic, class, and regional identities, emerged and changed over time?
