1 AMERICAN LEGION NEWSLETTER ALBERT J. HAMILTON POST 7 Nov/Dec 2017 Volume 17 Issue 6 Newsletter is published at 1688 W Bakerview Rd, Bellingham, WA COMMANDER S COMMENTS This year has flown by, it just seems like yesterday that we were basking in our wonderful summer sun. Now it s time to catch a turkey and think about what to get uncle Joe for Christmas. This month I will briefly touch on three subjects, membership, volunteers, and giving thanks. Our 2018 membership drive is well underway and we have crossed the halfway point to our 2018 goal of 906. For the past several years we have made our membership goals, as set by The American Legion Department of Washington. Each year it becomes ever more difficult because the Department keeps increasing our goal and we have so many of our members passing to the Post Everlasting. I encourage all of you to renew your membership early and actively recruit new members for our Post. Just have them call our adjutant at for information about becoming a member of The American Legion. Volunteers: Our Post runs on volunteers. There is no way that we could maintain the largest Post in the State of Washington without them. It was brought up at a Legion meeting recently that sometimes we forget to thank them. We all know they do a fantastic job, the folks that help us in the kitchen on Legion food nights to those who clean the bathrooms, mop the floors, maintain our building and grounds, buy supplies, serve on our Honor Guard, those who serve as officers of the Legion and all the others that volunteer their time and effort. Let our volunteers know how much you appreciate what they do the next time you see them giving their time to the Legion. Thank you so much for all that you do. We are so blessed to live in the Bellingham area, I don t think we really think about that much. In the last few months we have seen the horrible results of nature in the multiple hurricanes that have hit the southern United States and Puerto Rico and the horrible wildfires that have hit California. Thousands of families have lost everything and in some cases their lives. The many survivors of these events may take months or years to recover, some may not be able to recover at all. We also have seen man at his worst an individual for no apparent reason gunning down innocent concert goers in Las Vegas causing the death of 58 people and the wounding of hundreds. In this holiday season I hope you all take a moment to think about all those individuals that have lost so much and to think about how fortunate we are to live where we do. My wife Susan and I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Rick Sucee -COMMANDER POST 7
2 AMERICAN LEGION NEWSLETTER ALBERT J. HAMILTON POST 7 Nov/Dec 2017 Volume 17 Issue 6 Newsletter is published at 1688 W Bakerview Rd, Bellingham, WA Message from The President of the Auxiliary Holiday season is upon us. During this season of thankfulness and giving, let us not forget our Veterans and their families in need. Auxiliary will be doing food baskets and gifts for as many local veterans and their families as available funds will allow. Please let me know if you know a family that we could help. If you know any deployed veterans, let us know. We would like to send them notes and goodies. We will be doing Burger Night again on the second Friday. November 10 th will be the next one. December 8 th, Santa will visit us during Burger Night. Bring your kids for a visit and free hot dogs. For God & Country Carolyn Mendenhall Unit 7 Auxiliary President Adjutant s note: While wearing my Legion Jacket and cap, a new teller greeted me at the banking window, and said American Legion American Legion What s that? What does it do? I jokingly said It s a place where good old boys, hang out, play games, listen to music, eat food and drink beer She said oh that sounds like fun, can I join? I explained she had to be a veteran or active duty military, but not only that, a Legion member had to serve in the United States military during war time. When the country was at war! She said OH is that why they say thank you for your service. Then she said thank you for your service. As I left the bank 2 people waiting in line said thank you, and thank you for your service A scruffy looking man came to attention and saluted me. Totally unexpected! I realized it a great time in America to be a Legion member. It hasn t always been this way! Adjutant Dave Trott Son s of the American Legion Report I do hope that everyone had a Great Summer and enjoyed the nice weather we had this year. I also want to Thank all of you who went on the Boat Trip to Friday Harbor, and a Big Thank you to Bobby Hoffer and John Lowmon for all their hard work to put it together. I also say Thank you to All of you who make our Sons of The American Legion the Best it is. Please come out to the Post and help support all the Events and our Veterans. It's also time to renew your membership for 2018 for the Sons of the American Legion. Martin Richey SAL Commander
