Introduction to provisions in the WTO agreements that are relevant to the environment, focusing on legal interpretation of these provisions in the WTO jurisprudence and the implications for China as a WTO member. 5 Afternoon Plenary Session: Trade, Biodiversity and the WTO (continued) Presentations and discussion will focus on issues in sustainable trade and biodiversity conservation, including eco-labelling and certification, and assessing and managing the risks associated with trade in genetically modified organisms and alien invasive species. Participants will, based on the introductions on issues discussed in Day One and Day Two, develop their perspective on trade, environment and biodiversity issues. 9:00 Working Group Discussions Working Groups will discuss significant issues for China in the relationship between trade and biodiversity conservation, including access and benefit sharing, TRIPS, TK and IPRs, biosafety and sustainable trade, with the aim to identify policy options, and draw conclusions for the future. 7 Participants will bring the perspectives from China on the above specific issues into the context of the Doha Round of WTO negotiations. Participants will be involved in identifying the overall interest of China in trade, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, and China s strategies and positions on Para. 31 and 32, and on other issues discussed in the WTO Committee on Trade and Environment related to biodiversity. They will also identify China s overall policy options to promote sustainable trade and biodiversity conservation.
