6 6 Utthan Annual Report 2013 UTTHAN our vision & mission relevant today. The name Utthan was carefully chosen for its meaning: rising. Utthan was established in The experience of its founders pointed to a need for local leadership and shared responsibility for change change that must mean a genuine shift in power and decision-making capacities. In the beginning, Utthan provided external inputs from a makeshift of- home. Mahiti (or knowledge ) was established the same year to work in Dhandhuka town close to Ahmedabad. Mahiti worked to mobilize communities, particularly women, using their knowledge of self-sustaining development. Their shared belief was that people though aware of their hidden resources, missed links in their information which, if bridged, could lead them to work for their own development. This information would lead quickly to knowledge and awareness, essential triggers for self-reliant activity. Utthan believes that the greatest resource for development is the strength of the community. Once people learn that change is possible through collective effort and mutual trust, it is possible for them to intervene directly in matters of policy and implementation.
