1 UGANDA PROGRAM 2019 CALENDAR
2 LWF extends clean water to vulnerable communities like refugee settlements by drilling and motorising boreholes. LWF has drilled 707 borehole hand pumps and established 22 motorised systems in Uganda. These serve over thousands of people with clean safe water January st - New Year s Day / 26th - NRM Liberation Day
3 LWF strengthens Child Protection especially towards unaccompanied minors and separated children within Uganda s refugee settlements by; advocating for their rights, supporting community based child protection mechanisms such as provision of basic needs and the establishment of child friendly environment for their peaceful and decent stay. 1 2 February th - Archbishop Janani Luwum
4 Women Economic Empowerment is one of the core areas of LWF. LWF strives to uplift women economically by engaging them in productive and decent work to achieve individual, household and community self- reliance and resilience through both cash and non - cash programming. 1 2 March th - Women s Day
5 To eradicate poverty and promote selfreliance among vulnerable communities, LWF promotes sustainable economic growth by empowering targeted groups especially women and youth to access vocational skills like; fashion and design, motor repair, hairdressing, carpentry, among others, through which they can earn an income April th - Good Friday / 21st - Easter Sunday / 22nd - Easter Monday
6 LWF upholds Environment Protection among vulnerable communities. LWF promotes the use of clean and renewable energy, tree planting and conservation of endangered tree species. Through advocacy, LWF also lobbies for bylaws towards Environmental Conservation May st - Labor Day
7 LWF works towards improved sanitation and hygiene. To improve sanitation and hygiene, LWF not only invests in proper solid waste management, excreta disposal and vector control, but also builds the capacity and influences populaces in targeted communities to establish and use appropriate sanitary facilities. 1 June rd - Martyr s Day / 5th - Eid - Ul - Fitr / 9th - National Heroes Day
8 LWF supports education in Uganda s refugee settlements by constructing classroom blocks. LWF has constructed 270 classrooms in Uganda s refugee settlements to provide thousands of children access to education. LWF also supports Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) to empower individuals to read, write, attain business knowledge and skills July
9 With Rights Based Approach, LWF trains groups in financial management and business skills. The groups are also supported to establish and manage village savings and loan associations so that they can support one another to break the cycle of poverty by establishing income generating activities August th - Eid - Al - Adha
10 LWF supports and promotes the production of high value crops to ensure that targeted communities have adequate nutritious food and also earn income from their agriculture initiatives September
11 LWF identifies and nurtures talent among youth in Uganda s refugee settlements through Talent Search Competitions. The initiative is aimed at promoting creativity and social participation among young people, and empowering them to earn a living from their natural gifts October th - Independence Day
12 LWF extends Protection services to persons of concern in Uganda s refugee settlements and some of these include; prevention of and mitigating effects of Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Child Protection through holistic programming including; Psychosocial Support and access to justice. 1 2 November
13 LWF provides fully constructed modest shelters to persons with special needs in Uganda s refugee settlements. The support does not only provide protection but also improves the beneficiaries standards of living December th - Boxing Day / 25th - Christmas Day
14 A brief about the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Uganda is a country program part of the Lutheran World Federation - World Service (LWF - WS). LWF - WS is an international humanitarian and development organization that aims at reducing people s vulnerability, supporting them to realize their potential, to build on their assets, and to respond to their own problems and needs. Since LWF started its operations in Uganda in 1976, the organization has expanded and adapted its programs to the changing contexts in Uganda. Through its 9 offices all over the country, LWF supports communities devastated by civil war and tribal conflicts, families affected by drought and flooding as well as individuals struggling to reach self - sufficiency. Vision People of Uganda, living in just societies, in peace and dignity, united in diversity and empowered to achieve their full potential, claim their universal rights, meet their basic needs and improve their quality of life.
