RESEARCH PROJECTS Attenuating implicit gender biases about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professions present. This is an interdisciplinary research partnership in which we plan to assess the extent to which implicit biases about STEM professions and gender can be attenuated among middle-school aged girls and the extent to which corresponding personal career aspirations can be broadened. Principal Investigator: Prof. Caroline Hayes (Mechanical Engineering). Co- Investigators: Prof. Eugene Borgida (Psychology and Law), Prof. Thomas Misa (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Nancy Johnson (professional fine art photographer). The role of emotional experiences in political attitudes and political behavior present. In this set of studies, we analyze survey-experimental data and national election surveys to examine how emotions from different sources affect the direction and structure of political attitudes. Co-Principal Investigator: Damla Ergun; Co-Investigator: Prof. Christopher Federico.
5 The role of values and self-interest in political behaviors present. In a series of experiments, we test our hypothesis derived from Construal Level Theory that because material self-interest is more concrete, it should carry greater weight in the context of the immediate future whereas more abstract values should carry greater weight in the context of the distant future. Co-Investigators: Prof. Eugene Borgida., Prof. Shelly Chaiken & Anita Kim. The relationship between personality styles and political attitudes present. Using survey data, we examine the psychological antecedents of ideology. Principal Investigator: Prof. Christopher Federico; Co-Investigator: Damla Ergun. Restorative justice study for victim and offender mediation present. As certified mediators, we are conducting a longitudinal analog experiment to assess the effects of a two-stage conflict mediation intervention Principal Investigator: Prof. Marti Hope Gonzales; Co-investigator: Ryan Gonzalez. Dominant groups and dominant responses: Status-based asymmetries in epistemicallymotivated groupcentrism present. With a combination of survey attitudes toward real-world groups and an experimental manipulation of group status, we test whether people high in the need for closure display greater ingroup favoritism when in a high-status group. Principal Investigator: Prof. Christopher Federico; Co-Investigator: Emily Fisher. COLLOQUIA AND INVITED PRESENTATIONS Federico, C., Hunt, C., Kurzer, M., Willis, M., Newman, R., Coleman Wasik, J., & Voight C. (September, 2008).
