2 Freedom of Expression In 2008, the Universal Declaration for Human Rights celebrates its 60th anniversary. The conference aims to discuss one of the Declaration's key fundamental rights, namely freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is being put under great pressure in the last few years, both in America and in Europe, since it is being restrained for various reasons (freedom of religion or privacy of others, non-discrimination, public morals, public safety). Transatlantic Dialogue Conferences The conference is part of a series of transatlantic dialogues which was launched between the Law Schools of Northwestern University and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The aim of the conferences is to bring experts from both Europe and the United States together in order to share their vision and expertise on a current, important theme of human rights and international or comparative law.
