1 Marking Scheme SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT II (2014-1) SOCIAL SCIENCE (Class IX) PEBRDG0 General Instructions: 1. The Marking Scheme provides general guidelines to reduce subjectivity and maintain uniformity. The answers given in the marking scheme are the best suggested answers. 2. Marking be done as per the instructions provided in the marking scheme. (It should not be done according to one s own interpretation or any other consideration).. Alternative methods be accepted. Proportional marks be awarded. 4. If a question is attempted twice and the candidate has not crossed any answer, only first attempt be evaluated and EXTRA be written with the second attempt.. In case where no answers are given or answers are found wrong in this Marking Scheme, correct answers may be found and used for valuation purpose. ख ड क SECTION - A 1 a. 3 (i) The British proposed to stop shifting cultivation, hunting and collection of forests produce. (ii) Some villages were displaced without notice or compensation. When it became clear that the colonial authorities were prejudiced in favour of their white compatriots, the Parsis built their own Gymkhana to play cricket in. These two headgears did not only look different, but they also signified different things. (i) The turban in India was not just for protection from the heat but was a sign of respectability, and could not be removed at will. Mangrove forests : Royal Bengal Tiger, Turtles, Crocodiles, Gharials and snakes. 1 (i) The ruling parties routinely lose elections in India. (ii) About half of the sitting MLAs and MPs lose election. 5 16 Citizens cannot elect their government. Citizens do not have any political rights. There is no freedom of religion. (Any other relevant point) The judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts are appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister and in consultation with the Chief Justice of India. 2. (To be explained) 19 (1) After independence Indian Policy makers adopted all measures to achieve selfsufficiency in food grain. (2) India adopted a new strategy in agriculture. () This resulted in `Green Revolution' especially in the production of wheat and rice. 20 (1) Increase in MSP has induced farmers, particularly in surplus states; to divert land from production of grain. (2) The intensive utilisation of water in the cultivation of rice has also led to environmental degradation. () Fall in the water table/level, threatening the sustainability of the agricultural development in these states. 21 Pastoral Nomads are those groups who earn their livelihood by subsistence farming and cattle rearing. 6 (i) They move from place to place with their cattle in search of pastures and suitable weather for their herd. (ii) Their movement is seasonal and is guided by the need of their flock. (iii) They raise cattle, camels, goats, sheep etc. (iv) They sell milk, meat, animal skin and wool. (v) Some also earn through trade and transport. (vi) Others combine pastoral activity with agriculture. (Any four) The disappearance of oak forests created a problem of timber supply for the Royal Navy. The British could not build ships without a regular supply of strong and durable timber. It was a grave situation as the imperial power couldn t be protected and maintained without ships. As a solution, by the 1820s, search parties were sent to explore the forest resources of India. Within a decade, trees were felled on a massive scale and vast quantities of timber were exported from India. The British keen to grow opium in India because In the late 18th century; the English East India Company was buying tea and silk from China for sale in England. As. tea was gaining popularity in England, its demand rose from 1million poundsto,0 million pounds. England at that time produced nothing that could be easily sold in China. This means an outflow of treasure from England to China. Merchants wanted.to balance their trade. So they searched for a commodity they could sell in China. Opium was sucha commodity which had a demand in China, as it was used inmedicines. So to balance their trade and to earn huge profits they persuaded Indian farmers to grow opium. 7 22 Decolonisation led to the decline of British influence but this did not happen at once; it took a while for the relative unimportance of postimperial Britain to be reflected in the organisation of world cricket. Even after Indian independence kick-started the disappearance of the British empire, the regulation of international cricket remained the business of the Imperial Cricket Conference ICC. The ICC, renamed the International Cricket Conference as late as 196, was dominated by its foundation members, England and Australia, which retained the right of veto over its proceedings. The colonial flavour of world cricket during the 190s and 1960s can be seen from the fact that England and the other white commonwealth countries, Australia and New Zealand, continued to play Test cricket with South Africa, a racist state that practised a policy of racial segregation which, among other things, barred nonwhites representing that country in Test matches. After 1600, trade with India brought cheap, beautiful and easy to maintain Indian Chintzes (cotton cloth printed with designs and flowers). During the Industrial Revolution, in the 19 th century, Britain began the mass manufacture of cotton textiles which it exported to many parts of the world. Cotton clothes, now became more accessible to a wider section of people in Europe. By the early 20 th century, artificial fibres made clothes cheaper and easier to wash and maintain. 2 Steps taken by the government to protect the flora and fauna are as follows : (i) About 14 biosphere reserves have been set up in the country to protect both flora and fauna. Four out of these the Sunderbans (West Bengal) Nanda Devi (Uttranchal), Gulf of Mannar (Tamil Nadu) and Niligiris (Kerala Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) have been included in the world network of Biosphere Reserves. 8 developmental projects have been introduced. 24 Sudden arrival of Monsoon: The Monsoon arrives at the southern tip of peninsula generally by first week of June. It proceeds to Mumbai by 10th June, and Saurasthra Kuchchh and central parts of India by mid June. This is fairly a rapid advance. The Bay of Bengal branch arrive Assam in the first week of June and starts moving towards the west over the Ganga plains. The Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal branch joins together and move westwards. By first week of July these winds reach Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan and by mid- July entire country is under influence of monsoon. Retreat of monsoon is a gradual process: Withdrawal of Monsoon begins in northwestern states of India by early September. By mid October it, it completely withdraws from the northern half of the peninsula. The withdrawal from the southern half of the peninsula is fairly rapid.
