1 Take action for the women of Afghanistan Population: 31,108,077 Capital: Kabul Major languages: Dari and Pashto. Laghman province, Afghanistan. Parween has brought hope to many girls in the region by giving them the opportunity to have an education. Their right to education had previously been denied to them under Taliban rule. The Taliban came together in 1994 with the aim of making Afghanistan an Islamic state. The Taliban ruled in Afghanistan from 1996 until Under Taliban rule women and girls were not allowed to work or go to school, along with many other restrictions to their human rights. Targeted for defending human rights Parween is a human rights defender, dedicated to protecting and furthering the rights of women. But this has also made Parween a target for attacks. In April 2009 her 18 year old son, Hamayoon, was kidnapped. When they finally got the phone call from the kidnappers, it was clear that Hamayoon was being punished Despite her loss and suffering, Parween.

3 Sunday 5 October is World Teachers Day solidarity with Parween and all of the Human Rights Defenders braving difficult and dangerous circumstances to help women across Afghanistan. Have a Human Rights Defenders day at your school: dress up as a doctor, teacher, journalist, police officer or a lawyer. Print out the campaign placards and take a photo of your class holding the posters, or even your whole school!* Your photos will be part of our petition to the UK government calling on them to protect Human Right Defenders. *Please ensure people are happy for their photo to be used in this way.
