This document was approved for publication in July This document supersedes SANS :2008 (edition 5). A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 1. This document is referenced in the Regulations of the National Land Transport Act, 2009 (Act No. 5 of 2009), the Regulations of the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996), and the Regulations of the Administration Adjudication of the Road Traffic Offences Act, 1998 (Act No. 46 of 1998). Reference is made in clauses 1 and 3 to the "relevant national legislation". In South Africa this means the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996) (as amended from time to time). SANS 1116 consists of the following parts, under the general title Retro-reflective number plates for motor vehicles: Part 1: Blank plates (aluminium). Part 2: Number plates (aluminium). 5 Retro-reflective number plates for motor vehicles Part 4: Number plates (plastics) 1 Scope This part of SANS 1116, in addition to the relevant national legislation (see foreword), specifies requirements for plastic number plates that are intended for use on motor vehicles (including motor cycles and tricycles) and trailers. NOTE Annexes A and B provide information regarding the quality verification of plastic blank plates for retroreflective number plates, and the location of holes on number plates, respectively. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
