Currently one wing (19 rooms ) are dedicated for children, although there is scope to expand this if required. Only in exceptional ircumtances are children accommodated with adults, and they would never be required to share a cello. In addition, the courts are now able to send vulnerable 17 year olds to the Juvenile Justice Centre in Bangor where younger children are detained. There is, however, no provision for separating 17 year old girls from adult female prisoners at present, although the issue of where best to accommodate girls is currently under review, including the option of making further use of the Juvenile Justice Centre as an alternative. In the meantime, due to the very small numbers of female juveniles held at Hydebank Wood, it is, on balance, considered preferable to have them sharing accommodation, rather than risk the consequence potential for isolation. Hydebank Wood carries out a risk assessment to ensure that all juveniles are held in the most appropriate location for their needs. 18 December 2008 Page 1527 of 2339
