1 World,. HE 986 MERIN JEWISH YER OOK (JY) contained new estimates of the population in the various countries of the world at the end of, as well as background information and analysis. The statistical tables are reprinted here, without the accompanying text. hanges have been made in one respect only. While the estimates for the Jews in the 986 JY related to the end of, the data for the general population of the respective countries reproduced the United Nations estimates as of midyear 983. This time the updated United Nations estimates as of midyear have been used for the total population, and the proportion of of the respective country's total population has been adjusted accordingly. The 988 JY will present updated and, where necessary, revised population estimates for the countries of the world at the end of 986. The three main elements which affect the accuracy of each estimate are the nature of the base data, the recency of the base data, and the method of updating. simple code combining these elements is used to provide a general evaluation of the reliability of the population figures reported in the detailed tables below. The code indicates different quality levels of the reported estimates: () base figure derived from countrywide census or relatively reliable population survey; updated on the basis of full or partial information on population movements in the intervening period; () base figure derived from less accurate but recent countrywide population investigation; partial information on population movements in the intervening period; () base figure derived from less recent sources, and/or unsatisfactory or partial coverage of population in country; updating according to demographic information illustrative of regional demographic trends; and () base figure essentially conjectural; no reliable updating procedure. In categories (), (), and (), the years in which the base figures or important partial updates were obtained are also provided.
