Cambodia: Culture & History Captured in Stone. 18 November 27 November, 2007 Long off the tourist trail because of civil war and genocide under the infamous Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia fortunately is now open again due largely to the resilience and friendliness of its people and its unique historic attractions. Chief among these attractions is Angkor Wat, one of the wonders of the world, and included in BBC Books list of unforgettable places to see before you die. Lonely Planet says of Angkor The ruins of Angkor are in a category of their own: there is no other historical site in South-East Asia that matches their grandeur. Angkor was once the capital of the mighty Khmer Empire that extended over much of present-day Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, and which reached its zenith in the twelfth century. Angkor Wat is reason alone to visit Cambodia but there is more to attract the visitor. The Mekong River, one of the great rivers of the world, flows nearly 500 kilometres through Cambodia on its way to Vietnam and the South China Sea, its annual flooding contributing to the rich agricultural countryside. The Tonlé Sap Lake is linked to the Mekong River by the Tonlé Sap River, a river that has the unusual distinction of flowing in different directions at different times of the year. The county s capital, Phnom Penh, on the Tonlé Sap River, was at one time the loveliest of French cities in Indochina, and it still retains much of its charm despite the violence of the recent past. Finally, there are the friendly Cambodian people who welcome all visitors.

This oldest and most highly cultured kingdom of Southeast Asia attracts travellers from afar drawn to the splendours of Angkor Wat temple complex. But Cambodia has more to excite the traveller than temple complexes. Phnom Penh, capital of this Buddhist nation, exudes French heritage and charm, the museums and markets display or sell masterpieces of Khmer design, and the monks and local people provide living colour in the streets. Here we cruise the Chaktomuk River at sunset and visit local restaurants. Our land trip across the country to Siem Reap in the north, takes us along the banks of the Tonlé Sap Lake, past the rice fields and fishing villages of the nation, and we even stay in a Kampong. At Siem Reap we explore the wonders and magnificence of Angkor Wat over three days interspersed with markets, a Cambodian Cultural Show and another sunset river cruise. The scale and variation of the temples at Angkor Wat will keep you enthralled and wanting to explore more as the history of the nation unfolds from the stone carvings and monuments. Tour Leader: Dr Suzanne Brugger, popular WEA Tour leader and formerly lecturer in Asian Studies at Flinders University. Suzanne had led many tours to Asia and the Middle East for WEA Travel. Weather: Cambodia is within the tropics and we visit at the end of the wet season and start of the slightly cooler season. Temperatures will range between 22 and 30 degrees.

Itinerary Day 1. Sunday 18 November. We depart Adelaide International Airport mid afternoon on our flight to Kuala Lumpur. Upon arrival we will be transferred to a hotel and accommodated for the night by the airline. Overnight Kuala Lumpur (Meals in flight) Day 2. Monday 19 November. This morning we transfer back to the airport for our flight to Phnom Penh, arriving mid morning. On arrival we begin our sightseeing in the capital with a visit to a restaurant for lunch. We begin learning about the art and architecture of the Khmer with the Silver Pagoda located within the Royal Palace compound. Nearby is where the royal elephants are kept. We visit the National Museum with it stunning collection of Khmer artwork, much of it dating back to the 1 st to 6 th century kingdoms. It is known for its bronzes and pottery, with many of the bronzes dating back to the classical period of Angkor - the 10 th to 14 th centuries AD. Next we drive along the city s beautiful river to the Ounalom Monastery to learn about Phnom Penh s history and people. Overnight Phnom Penh (Lunch, dinner.) Day 3. Tuesday 20 November. After breakfast we make an excursion to the Genocide (Tuol Sleng) Museum to learn about the darkest period of Cambodia s history. The museum was formerly a high school taken over by the security forces of Pol Pot. In a sombre mood we then move on to Cheung Ek, the immortalised Killing Fields of Pol Pot s regime. It was originally an orchard. After lunch we have a more uplifting, but equally emotional experience with a visit to Geraldine Cox s orphanage just outside the city. This remarkable woman from Adelaide lived through the Khmer Rouge period as she was determined to protect her precious orphans. She was eventually granted Cambodian citizenship by Royal Decree (the monarchy was re-established in 1993) and she has also been honoured with a Member of Australia award.

On our return to the city we visit the Wat Phnom with the first pagoda here dating from The city was named after this temple. Then in the late afternoon we board a boat to cruise along the Chaktomuk River, one of the many tributaries of the might Mekong which flows through Phnom Penh on its way to Vietnam. Overnight Phnom Penh (Breakfast, lunch, dinner) Day 4. Wednesday 21 November. This morning we visit the famous Toul Tompoung Market of Phnom Penh, also known as the Russian market. It is best for antiques, silver, gold and textiles! We leave the city and drive out to the former capital of Cambodia, Oudon, before we begin our long journey along the edge of Tonlé Sap Lake. We can observe the daily life of the farmers and fishermen, with views of ancient stupas along the way. We continue till we arrive at Kampong Chnang (Port of Pottery), known for its pottery production and the fishing villages with floating houses. We spend the night in the old French colonial quarter of town, in the best available hotel, which is only of budget class and not international standard. Be prepared to experience of bit of the real Cambodia for just one night! Overnight Kampong Chnang (Breakfast, lunch, dinner) Day 5. Thursday 22 November. We continue our rural travels towards Siem Reap in our airconditioned coach. Upon arrival we lunch at a local restaurant, then transfer to our hotel for the next four nights. After some free time we do a late afternoon tour of the city, the Artisan d Angkor (craftsmen) section, a local fishing village and we then enjoy a sunset cruise on Lake Tonlé Sap itself. Overnight Siem Reap (Breakfast, lunch, dinner) Day 6. Friday 23 November. King Jayavarman II created a kingdom and royal city for himself in the ninth century AD at the site of Angkor. The most famous of these UNESCO listed temples is Angkor Wat itself, which dates from 1131AD to 1150AD. The temple was dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu by King Suryavarman II, but it is now a Buddhist temple.

Angkor Wat is just one of about a dozen temples at the site and Angkor Wat itself covers about 200 hectares, has five towers, and the longest continuous bas-relief in the world. It is the largest, most impressive and most important temple in Asia and its dimensions makes it comparable to the Egyptian Pyramids in terms of the size and scale of the monument. We begin our explorations with the southern area with the ancient royal palace and city of Angkor Thom, which includes the golden tower of Bayon (flanked by more than 20 other towers), Baphoun temple, the Elephant terraces, the majestic entrance towers (23 metres or 75 feet tall), and the dozens of stone figures and bas-reliefs. This city of Angkor Thom was some 3 kilometres square. We return to our hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we visit the magnificent Taprom Temple, which has massive banyan and kapok trees growing through the stone buildings just as the archaeologists found it many years ago. Here the jungle still encroaches on the temple complex, but in its heyday 79,000 people were employed to maintain the complex! This is a photographer s paradise. We continue with a visit to Angkor Wat itself. Be prepared to be amazed and impressed with this visit. The architectural struc-

ture of the temple is difficult to grasp, as it is so huge. The covered galleries, massive stone towers (up to 213 metres or 700 feet) and the symbolism of the carvings and bas-reliefs all require some interpretation. Yet the symmetry of the design is striking. The walkways across ancient moats, carved lion guards, elaborate staircases, hundreds of carved apsaras (dancing ladies) and complex chambers will keep you fascinated and impressed. Later we go to Backheng Hill to view the temples and the sunset.

After dinner at our hotel we relax with a Cambodian Cultural Dance Show. Overnight Siem Reap (Breakfast, lunch, dinner) Day 7. Saturday 24 November. This morning after breakfast we visit Banteay Srey, the citadel of the women. This tenth century temple is known for its intricate pink stone carvings. Although small, the temple is remarkably well preserved and considered a gem of Khmer art. Nearby we explore Banteay Samre, the citadel of a local ethnic group of people related to the Khmers. The temple has a unique interior moat which gives it an ethereal atmosphere. We return to the city of Siem Reap for lunch. In the afternoon we view Banteay Kdey, Takeo, Srah Srang Terrace and the Prasat Kravan. This complex of buildings includes a 12 th Century temple, a 10 th century pyramid like structure, and the royal pool or king s bathing pool. Banteay Kdey has not been restored and allows you to experience the site as found by archaeologists. We return to Siem Reap and dine in a local restaurant. Overnight Siem Reap (Breakfast, lunch, dinner) Day 8. Sunday 25 November. This morning after breakfast we visit another group of buildings including, Pre Roup (temple know for its perfect proportions), Mebon (a temple on a small island in the middle of an ornamental lake), Neak Poun (a temple dedicated to the cosmic world), and more. After lunch at our hotel we continue with visits to the gate of death, and the ancient bridge. We have dinner in a city restaurant. Overnight Siem Reap (Breakfast, lunch, dinner) Day 9. Monday 26 November. You have a free morning, which will allow you to visit the local markets and do some shopping. In the early afternoon we transfer to the airport for our flight to Kuala Lumpur. We have a few hours here before we board the overnight flight to Adelaide. Overnight in flight (Breakfast, meals in flight) Day 10. Tuesday 27 November. We arrive early at Adelaide International Airport. g
